I have a new friend, we get on really well and have a lot in common. I work with her but see her a fair bit out of work, it is important for our jobs that we have a good relationship.

Recently with the election she has become obsessive about her party of choice. We happen to have the same political views but I choose not to shout about them on social media.

Said friend has been on social media in the last week saying that anyone who doesn’t vote for her party of choice is “an oppressor”.

Today anyone who votes and doesn’t mention who they are voting for is getting drilled by her.
I rarely post on social media but today I put up a #dogsatpollingstations post, because the world deserves to see more of my dog (and my DC are excited about the election process). I then got a message saying that I needed to outright say who I voted for, that “silence is not an option” and in not sharing my vote I am a “closet Tory” and “siding with the oppression”.

She is now ranting on Instagram about people “voting blue but demanding silence”.
This woman is 38, a professional and intelligent woman who for the rest of the year I have known her has barely been politically active and has been very pleasant to spend time with.

What happened to it being bad manners to ask who someone votes for?

A good friend of mine unfriended me on SM when she realised I vote tactically on the left instead of slavishly following Corbyn. It's such a shame, because we had more in common than separated us. And it's highly counter-productive. The ballot is secret, let it remain so.

I am absolutely dreading the thought of a Tory victory. I think it will see more social division and I think it will see us head towards a dictatorship. But you don't change this by bullying people on Facebook.

I found her constant screen shotting people (who has posted that they had been to vote but not disclosed who they had voted for) and then scrawling “secret Tory??” across it so upsetting.

She sounds bonkers. And a bully. It's none of her business who other people choose to vote for. I'd probably have told her to fuck off too.

This election does seem to have brought out a whole new level of nastiness, particularly from some Labour voters (who ironically are calling the Tories nasty). There's no need for it. All this "if you vote Tory you deserve to die" rubbish. I mean, seriously?!! That's your best argument? Well I guess if all the Tory voters die, Labour won't have to borrow so much with such a drastically reduced population. Maybe that's Jeremy's master plan.

As for the posters on here being shocked at the OP telling a colleague (outside of work) to fuck off, give the OP a break. You've obviously all never worked in banking. We use fuck like a comma. If a colleague tried to bully me into revealing who I voted for when I chose to keep it private, they'd get a lot more than a fuck off from me (in or out of work).

I’ve always been a swing voter and in my life have voted for each of three main parties. However behaviour like this completely turns me off and that’s not the party’s fault.

YANBU, although I have noticed anecdotally that Labour and Libdem voters are much more candid about who they vote for. Tory voters are more close mouthed.

They've certainly lost my vote. I've been watching what's been happening in local branches for the last couple of years and am horrified at the aggressive misogyny and authoritarianism of some of these activists. It seems only narrow orthodoxies are tolerated, and there is no possibility of discussing things and coming to a consensus. The thought of such people getting their hands in power is chilling. The behaviour of the OP''s colleague sounds par for the course.

I am a socialist and have been on the hard left since I was a teenager. I don't like this trendy support labour bollocks. We need to educate the young about our cause and show them how to live socialist ideology. We don't need to bully people on social media.
This goes for all beliefs.
I might also add that I am anti state of Israel. Not anti Jew. I am not anti any religion. If I am asked I will explain what I believe and hope I have inspired the asker to find out more.
