to have told my friend to fuck off?

I have a new friend, we get on really well and have a lot in common. I work with her but see her a fair bit out of work, it is important for our jobs that we have a good relationship.

Recently with the election she has become obsessive about her party of choice. We happen to have the same political views but I choose not to shout about them on social media.

Said friend has been on social media in the last week saying that anyone who doesn’t vote for her party of choice is “an oppressor”.

Today anyone who votes and doesn’t mention who they are voting for is getting drilled by her.
I rarely post on social media but today I put up a #dogsatpollingstations post, because the world deserves to see more of my dog (and my DC are excited about the election process). I then got a message saying that I needed to outright say who I voted for, that “silence is not an option” and in not sharing my vote I am a “closet Tory” and “siding with the oppression”.

AIBU to have told her to fuck off?
She is now ranting on Instagram about people “voting blue but demanding silence”.
This woman is 38, a professional and intelligent woman who for the rest of the year I have known her has barely been politically active and has been very pleasant to spend time with.

What happened to it being bad manners to ask who someone votes for?

She sounds awful, I'd have made a complaint about her behaviour in work.

Pinkyyy · 12/12/2019 19:47

Ah cross post, I'd unfriend her on SM then in that case.

yellowbananas123 · 12/12/2019 19:49

today my social media has been rammed with virtue signalling twonks imploring everyone to vote Labour, declaring that any other vote is for pure unadulterated evil, etc etc... Yawn.

firstimemamma · 12/12/2019 19:50

I hate the tories but would be tempted to tell her that's who I voted for to see her reaction Grin

Aridane · 12/12/2019 19:51

She is first and foremost a colleague - and you really don't tell colleagues to fuck off (appreciate you felt provoked)

GCAcademic · 12/12/2019 19:51

I'd report her to your employer for bullying. That's completely out of order. Who the fuck does she think she is?

Bluntness100 · 12/12/2019 19:52

Not unreasonable and surprised it took you so long.

Siding with the oppression, what a nut job.

Rainbowshine · 12/12/2019 19:53

I would change my settings on SM so that you can’t see her posts and she can’t see yours. I made a friend into acquaintance status on FB for the reason that their feed was an ongoing constant party political broadcast.

Dontlikeoranges · 12/12/2019 19:54

She's being vile and bullying. Everyone has the right to keep their vote to themselves. I don't know how my parents voted, I don't know how my son has voted. I do know how a lot of my friends voted and it's entirely their choice to make it public or not. I I would not want to continue a friendship with this person

LazyDaisey · 12/12/2019 19:54

If it’s important you get along at work, don’t be friends with her outside of work. Neither of you can maintain your professionalism, so it’s in both of your interests to remain cordial and friendly without getting to know one another as actual friends. Since you know, you think she’s an asshole.

messolini9 · 12/12/2019 19:54

YANBU

"Silence is not an option* my arse.
WhoTF is she voting for, the Totalitarian New Order Militia of Oppressing For the End of Oppression?
If when she bangs on at you tomorrow, tell her you voted exactly the same way that she did.

By secret ballot, a right won for us by heroes of the working people.

Luckylassiam · 12/12/2019 19:54

This is very typical of Labour supporters now. Wtf is happening to that party? It’s actually scary. It’ll be like this for a while seeing as they’ve got rid of their moderate members.

crispysausagerolls · 12/12/2019 19:57

Wtf did you lie to the exit poll people?!

I’ve been waiting all day for the exit poll!!! I have been counting on it’s accuracy!!

crispysausagerolls · 12/12/2019 19:57

*its

RhubarbTea · 12/12/2019 20:00

I'm a Labour supporter but I cringe at people like this, what the actual fuck is wrong with them? A friend once was like this but about her veganism, it drove me crazy and she has calmed down now and stopped trying to convert people and being aggressive and shitty about the topic. I had to unfollow her on SM at the time; this was a while ago now.

I just want everyone to vote. If they are using their vote, and have thought carefully about who to vote for, then I'm a happy bunny. Even if they are voting for a party I do not like. I may privately think that person is lacking in empathy or whatever depending on who they voted for but I wouldn't harangue them about it. That's horrible!
I wouldn't tell anyone to fuck off either, mind.

PrtScn · 12/12/2019 20:03

Labour supporter perchance? I found during the last election a lot of the Labour supporters on my friends list were like this. Then when the Conservatives won wondered how as they “didn’t see any Conservative posts”. I was tempted to say that there’s more than 2 parties to choose from and they were probably too scared to mention they supported another party because they’d just get bombarded by vitriol.

Trewser · 12/12/2019 20:04

I am sad that you lied to the exit poll people Sad

crispysausagerolls · 12/12/2019 20:05

@Trewser me too!

Bluntness100 · 12/12/2019 20:06

There's been a lot of it on here too, "if you don't vote for them you want people to die" proper Marxist socialist stuff. Can't believe we are seeing it in Britain today.

OhChristmasTreee · 12/12/2019 20:06

Sounds like your common or garden SNP voter to me.

TheBananaStand2 · 12/12/2019 20:13

Meh, she’s rude but right. What’s your shame about voting for?

ChristmasSpirtsOnTheRocksPleas · 12/12/2019 20:15

The irony! I’m dying of laughter (the sad kind of Russian laughter I inherited from my poor oppressed parents).

InfiniteSheldon · 12/12/2019 20:15

So many of my left wing friends are behaving like this, that they can't see how fascist they are us deeply worrying.

Jux · 12/12/2019 20:19

It's a secret ballot, remind her. How you vote is not her business.

Election2019 · 12/12/2019 20:20

@SheOfManyNames the OP didn’t and I didn’t say that she did, I only asked why so many Labour voters now act like this. Across all my social media (and I’m friends or related to Lib Dem and Labour counsellors, as well as Green, Tory and Independent voters) I’ve not seen it with any other party supporter.
