She has been talking about the postal votes and how they look for the Labour party.

Either it's misinformation she's been given, or she is just telling what she knows.

Either way, she should know the law about postal votes.

"Anyone attending a postal vote opening session has a duty to maintain secrecy. Ballot papers will be kept face down throughout a postal vote opening sessio"

"It may be an offence to communicate any information obtained at postal vote opening sessions, including about votes cast, before a poll has closed. Anyone with information to suggest this has happened should report it immediately to the police"

She should be aware of the rules and know when to keep quiet. I would have thought that since she had been caught out recently with tweeting fake news from Conservative sources, she would have been more careful.

Loons.

CoolCarrie · 11/12/2019 19:10

I think she is brilliant!

Clavinova · 11/12/2019 19:11

Counting votes - or an exit poll/survey?

MistyCloud · 11/12/2019 19:11

I loathe her so much that I can't say what I think or I'll get the post deleted.

cardiffbird · 11/12/2019 19:12

She's dreadful and has never hidden her allegiance. I'm appalled having seen the clip.

lljkk · 11/12/2019 19:14

I'm confused...

If I overhear indiscreet people (who I happen to know do work at the council) in the pub saying all the postal votes were for Greens, and then I tell everyone on MN what they said... is that a crime? To repeat gossip is a crime?

lljkk · 11/12/2019 19:15

.. and after all, if I committed a crime by repeating the gossip, the does this thread (MN) also commit a crime by repeating gossip. Does a tabloid commit a crime by telling a story about the gossip?

fedup21 · 11/12/2019 19:17

This is a chat forum. Laura Kuenssberg is a paid journalist by the supposedly unbiased BBC.

PortiaCastis · 11/12/2019 19:20

I'm not ok with a journo breaking electoral law she should be thoroughly ashamed of herself and be disciplined, no she is not great because she should know better and her behaviour is out of order.

Notonthestairs · 11/12/2019 19:20

BBC is left leaning in many areas. But individual broadcasters and journalists may themselves be right leaning - see John Humphreys, Andrew Neil, Sarah Sands (political Ed), Nick Robinson (President of Oxford Uni Conservatives Assoc and founder member of Macclesfield Young Cons).

I was a big fan of LK and read her twitter feed - since June I've noticed that she does appear to regurgitate verbatim whatever "senior Tory advisors" tell her without providing context.

I think she revealed postal vote info knowing that she would be in breach and has calculated nobody will follow it up.

Breathlessness · 11/12/2019 19:21

’Laura Kuenssberg is a paid journalist by the supposedly unbiased BBC’

Paid to report news. This is news.

fedup21 · 11/12/2019 19:23

We have very worrying times ahead of us if BBC journalists will breach laws with no repercussions and Boris can lie to the queen and everyone else without repercussions...

chomalungma · 11/12/2019 19:23

Seriously op, she's broken no law, the votes aren't even counted yet, give it up

From the Electoral Commision

It may be an offence to communicate any information obtained at postal vote opening sessions, including about votes cast, before a poll has closed. Anyone with information to suggest this has happened should report it immediately to the police.

Breathlessness · 11/12/2019 19:26

I’m sure you’d be all over this if she’d reported that the Tories were concerned.

Breathlessness · 11/12/2019 19:27

It ‘May be’ a huge overreaction by people who want to shoot the messenger.

chomalungma · 11/12/2019 19:31

Are you concerned about the political reporting of a BBC journalist and her tweeting of fake news and the results of postal voting?

I run the twitter account for my job and I know what I am and am not allowed to do in an election period - and there would be repercussions of I did.

OP posts:
chomalungma · 11/12/2019 19:32

t ‘May be’ a huge overreaction by people who want to shoot the messenger

Or it may be people concerned about the messenger not being an independent source of news.

OP posts:
marvellousnightforamooncup · 11/12/2019 19:33

Don't shoot the messenger is her usual crap defence when she repeats unfounded slurs from Tory HQ without attempting to ascertain their veracity like an unbiased BBC journalist should be doing as standard.

Milicentbystander72 · 11/12/2019 19:34

Both Peston (itv) and Laura were told the about the Leeds 'punch' from 2 separate sources. As soon as they saw the video they both retracted immediately in several tweets.

However only Laura has got the heat and the sacklaura hashtag on Twitter. Why not both of them?

chomalungma · 11/12/2019 19:37

This thread is about the postal voting.

It's just more evidence.

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 11/12/2019 19:38

I didn't think postal votes were counted beforehand. Where's the evidence for this? It's pretty obvious that rumours would come out if that was the case and to not count them is the only way to keep things secret.

I love Laura. I think she does a fantastic job of calling out both sides.

lljkk · 11/12/2019 19:40

Load of info about attending postal ballot openings. I guess it does make sense for Tellers to go watch & report back to their parties.

I luffs LK & hope she hasn't screwed up by repeating gossip.

chomalungma · 11/12/2019 19:41

idn't think postal votes were counted beforehand. Where's the evidence for this

Well, either they aren't counted and Laura is lying or they are counted and Laura is breaking electoral law.

The best thing to do would have been to be quiet. Especially the day after she had to apologise for tweeting fake news.

OP posts:
Thethiniceofanewday · 11/12/2019 19:42

She has broken the law and as a senior political journalist she should know that you can’t disclose postal vote tallies for the same reason you can’t report any polling tomorrow until 10pm - by revealing the interim totals you might affect the result.

She ought to be in deep shit.

Breathlessness · 11/12/2019 19:44

It’s amazing how often the woman and/or ethnic minority is the one who’s targeted.
