to be incensed that toys r us insist customers MUST use a plastic bag for purchase?

Today my dd bought 2 little cuddly toys which she wanted to hold on the way home. The surly assistant insisted we had to use a plastic carrier bag and told us when i refused 'it's policy for the alarms. You can just throw it in the bin once you leave the shop' I was shocked and said ' are they recycled?' and she looked flummoxed. The person behind me backed me up and said how shocking it was to willfully wrap something up and insist we threw it away as the bags takes so long to decompose. The assistant wrapped them up and I took them out, took my receipt and left the shop. I was really cross and my dd was really upset (she assumes shop asistant shave more authority than I have). I ended up saying to the woman that I felt for her having to enforce such a ridiculous policy.

OOOHH I am hopping mad. Aren't we meant to be doing something about climate change. Can we get petition going or something?

Couldn't find anything on their corporate website - their policies are all about returns etc

ConnorTraceptive · 23/08/2007 14:26

probably isn't there general policy but maybe the something the store manager made up.

They can be very sad people toys r us managers you know. I worked there through university.

They had some of the most bizarre customer service policies ever. I think the managers are brainwashed during their training.

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 14:28

I was looking for a general high level environmental policy, even a mission statement. Suppose it isn't that surprising if they don't have one

sugarmatches · 23/08/2007 14:42

Dd works part-time at Toys-R-Us and always complains about the other people that work there always being rude! Thank god she is at college and wont still bethere at 40!!
I just asked and there is no such policy at her store. She did say that the security get a bit "rent-a-cop" sometimes.

MuffinMclay · 23/08/2007 17:15

How ridiculous of them!

Must vary from store to store. I went to one last week where they asked if I needed a bag (I didn't).

I would complain, but I'm in a complaining mood today.

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 17:19

i find their bags useful for supermarket shopping as they're so large.

how can you not like toysrus! it's the only toy shop around nowadays

beansontoast · 23/08/2007 17:23

no!

i am insensed(?)when anybody insists i do anything...and a shop...well...i can hardly breathe!

ska · 23/08/2007 17:28

absolutely. i'm pleased the person behind me backed me up though, I just need to cultivate a 'holier' attitude rather than a downright pissed off one while i am campaigning tho'.........

ours asks for no large bags to be taken in. there are no toilets/baby change )etc) either.

they pack the bags automatically at ours but you can't get to the exit without going thru the tils anyway so am not sure if that make it irrelavent.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/08/2007 17:32

Toys are us is the juvenile entrance to hell.

americantrish · 23/08/2007 17:35

i dont like toys 'r us. too expensive for a start and some of their policies annoy me.

i would be angry enough if in your shoes, ska, to write the manager though.
some people dont care about plastic bags and things like that. or they just dont think about it.

Carnoodleusfudge · 23/08/2007 17:36

Our toysrus plays music so loudly - hideous hideous shop

whomovedmychocolate · 23/08/2007 17:37

I'd rather play with the bags than the toys and so would my DD!

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 17:38

when you're hunting around for that specific dr who toy or jigsaw or whatever. toysrus seems to be the only place that stocks them all.

do you all have great toy shops near you?

Carnoodleusfudge · 23/08/2007 17:38

Internet

ska · 23/08/2007 17:39

normally i don't go there and do stuff online but my dd still had birthday money and wanted to touch and feel the toys. I go 2 times a year to get bday pressies and xmas pressies in a big batch. But anyway they are the main toyshop everywhere ad tehy ought to be more responsible!

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 23/08/2007 17:43

ditto internet. would not go to toys r us in a bizillion years. too much tat.

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 17:44

with the internet though, you're getting more packaging surely?

ruddynorah · 23/08/2007 17:46

nothing wrong with a recyclable cardboard box as you get from amazon, funky moose, etc.

wolveschick · 23/08/2007 17:46

Dont like them at all. If you are refunding something you are made to feel like you are doing something wrong. Had to point out Sale of Goods Act to local shop assistant as what she was saying were their policies on faulty goods were not in line with the legislation. later when product broke again I could not face local store so wrote to customer services and was given full refund and told there had been a design fault all alone.

ska · 23/08/2007 17:52

ok I have complained - letter to local manager and copied it to the HQ. Will let you know!

ska · 23/08/2007 19:49

btw, does anybody live in an area where they have 'banned' plastic bags in the local shops? would love to do this for where I live

fizzbuzz · 23/08/2007 20:22

I hate that shop, even reading this makes my blood pressure rise.

A good argument for eugenics methinks. Staff are so dense. I can't even go near it

JodieG1 · 23/08/2007 20:29

I use the internet a lot but I do like toyrus for when I want to look for toys, games, puzzles etc or for when I want something then and there rather than waiting for days.

southeastastra · 23/08/2007 20:33

how can you ban plastic bags? and why would you just re-use them.

there just aren't any decent toyshops anymore, toysrus seems (and has been for years) to be the only one that has everything.

i have neices and nephews and sons with very specific requests for toys
