to be incensed that toys r us insist customers MUST use a plastic bag for purchase?

Today my dd bought 2 little cuddly toys which she wanted to hold on the way home. The surly assistant insisted we had to use a plastic carrier bag and told us when i refused 'it's policy for the alarms. You can just throw it in the bin once you leave the shop' I was shocked and said ' are they recycled?' and she looked flummoxed. The person behind me backed me up and said how shocking it was to willfully wrap something up and insist we threw it away as the bags takes so long to decompose. The assistant wrapped them up and I took them out, took my receipt and left the shop. I was really cross and my dd was really upset (she assumes shop asistant shave more authority than I have). I ended up saying to the woman that I felt for her having to enforce such a ridiculous policy.

OOOHH I am hopping mad. Aren't we meant to be doing something about climate change. Can we get petition going or something?

They can't make you use a carrier bag. Just do what you did and take your goods out with the receipt and leave the bag there. What a ridiculous policy!!!

2shoes · 23/08/2007 13:22

yanbu another reason to hate that shop

Botbot · 23/08/2007 13:24

God I hate Toys 'R' Us. The first and only time I went in there was when dd was three weeks old, and I got thrown out of the store for carrying a bag. Surly security guard said 'we don't let bags in here cos of terrorism'. I'd actually been about to approach him to ask if they had a baby feeding area like in Mothercare - no bleeding chance of that either, clearly.

Tigana · 23/08/2007 13:24

'Policy for the alarms' my buttcheeks!
Policy for getting the toys r us logo in your hands and out on the streets!

Botbot · 23/08/2007 13:24

This was dd's baby change bag, by the way.

geekymummy · 23/08/2007 13:26

That sounds like a silly poilcy - surely a RECEIPT is proof of purchase, I presume that's what she meant by "it's policy for the alarms"?

bozza · 23/08/2007 13:29

They don't allow bags because of shoplifters not terrorists - and haven't done for years. Not that I have ever had my bag taken off me. They do have toilets and baby change though.

sparklygothkat · 23/08/2007 13:29

I remember my mum being searched because she had a handbag in toysrus.

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:30

How ridiculous, especially when most shops (Body Shop and Boots) are going the other way and making sure you actually want a bag before packing your stuff! Most of the time when I'm shopping i have the changing bag with me and there's plenty of room in there for anything I buy.

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:31

sgk - do most people not go in with a bag of some sort then?? How do women pay for stuff? (I assume men have wallet in pocket, but thought most women would have a bag)

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 13:31

ridiculous - thankfully most shops in our town seem quite pleased when I refuse a bag (not alwasy - depends whether I have the pushchair with me or not lol) and seem mostly to be encouraging people not to have one if they don't need one.

Boots and Bodycare always ask me "do you need a bag" - rather than just giving me one anyway.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 13:32

ooo Katy x posts with you there - funny we both said the same shops

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:33

I think the body shop have always done it, as you would expect, but I've noticed Boots doing this in the last year or so especially.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 13:34

actually just realise we didn't say quite the same shops - you said Bodyshop, I said Bodycare (totally different LOL)

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:35

I wonder if Toys r us have any sort of environmental policy? Just having a look on their website

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 23/08/2007 13:35

i always take my bag in with me.

actually i remember once, my dad took all of us kids toy shopping. we didntwant he toys in bag, and despite the secruity guard seeing my dad go through the till and everything being paid for, he wouldnt let my dad leave untill he had checked his receipt. my dad was very angry, as secruity was very rude to him and made him feel like a thrif in front of his children.

Botbot · 23/08/2007 13:36

In my case, this arse of a security guard ordered me to take my bag back to the car (he assumed I'd come in a car, of course) and just come back in with my purse. So I grabbed dp and stalked out in a huff. Dd was screaming at this point. I was so, so annoyed - I went straight home and wrote a stiff letter.

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:36

I thought yours was a mistake, never heard of bodycare, what is it?

Katy44 · 23/08/2007 13:37

Right, car thieves know where to break in then because of their stupid rule

That's weird as I was in toys r us the other day with my SIL and we bought a load of bucket and spades and just hung them straight on the buggy, no mention of us needing a bag.

Bizarre. Sounds more like 'Shop assistant with delusions of grandeur' than policy I think!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 13:48

Bodycare also sell toiletries, baby wipes etc - lots of different brands - but lower prices (I buy my nappy sacks there - 250 for 89p ........oops not very enviromentally friendly I'm afraid ).

Spidermama · 23/08/2007 13:56

Well done makng a fuss ska. I despise Toys R Us and I won't go there any more as the whole experience is deeply traumatic. Aisles and aisles of landfill fodder.

oliveoil · 23/08/2007 14:00

I have one of these

you will never need a plastic one again

M&S, Boots and Tescos ask now

ska · 23/08/2007 14:10

wow! great response. She was my age (so around 40 something) and surly and annoying. I can't believe the attitude of the shop really. I use my string bag and 'bags for life' nearly always but didn't take one in as I knew dd would want to hold new cuddly.
i iwll look at their website and may consider a complaint as i am so incensed. Trying to save the planet and I get this!
