Fucking Christmas Jumper Day

AIBU and a scrooge?

My work are having a Christmas jumper day. We are a small team so it will be noticed if I don't join in and it has been implied I will be making my team look bad if I refuse.

I don't own a Christmas jumper and I don't want to waste money on something I'll never wear again. The idea is that we bring in a monetary donation and also have a donation tin for clients to donate. I have suggested a local charity for disadvantaged children.

I'd rather put an extra tenner in the donation bucket than spend it on a hideous piece of glittery landfill. I've asked around and nobody has one I can borrow, can't make it round the charity shops before the day and I'm told wearing a festive colour with some tinsel in my hair isn't in the spirit of things.

I don't like Christmas but I'm not outwardly scroogey about it. Unsure if I'm being a total bore and "that person" or if I'm justified in not being arsed with it.

I don't buy my children new ones every year, they have got one each that others have bought them and they wear those a few times over the holidays until they don't fit.

At my workplace I don't wear one, everyone else does, no one else cares that I don't wear one.

I'm a short, fat, middle-aged woman (Miriam Margolyes look-a-like), entering the menopause, I wear jumpers for no-one!

I work in a charity shop and all our Christmas jumpers and tops went weeks ago. Same in all the local ones.

Stick a tenner in the donation. There is no point in buying something you don't want to buy.

So many trying to persuade to join in with workarounds? What happened to the good old mumsnet 'no is a complete sentence'?

As you can get to a supermarket, how about getting a pair of xmas baby mittens to tack or pin onto an existing top? Said mittens can then be donated to a charity shop (when you can get to one).

I hung baubles from where my nipples are located (ok probably slightly higher) and it was just a plain black jumper Grin

OP - What did you do/say last year or the years before that? Surely this is not the first time you've been asked to wear one.

If you don't want to, don't do it.

You can often find very cheap Christmas jumpers on eBay. I'd say just buy one for under a tenner and hold onto it, because you'll probably need it again in future years as Christmas jumper days are pretty common in most workplaces now. Failing that, as others have said, be creative and sew some baubles and decorations to something you already own - I don't see how anyone could object to that.

I do think too, though, that your work is being unreasonable for making you feel that you have no choice in this. Bear in mind that loads of people don't even celebrate Christmas.

Develop an "I don't give a shit" attitude, put money in the donation box and don't wear a jumper.

The OP doesn't want a fucking Christmas jumper.
It's not the law.
Should she be getting some new pjs for Christmas Eve too?

Safety pin some baubles to an existing jumper.

I have a pine green jumper - that’s the nearest I get to a Christmas jumper. I can wear a Santa hat or baubles or borrow one of the Christmas hair bands that I bought 8 years ago and which get wheeled out every year!

I worked in a care setting where we were asked to wear something festive on the day they held Christmas lunch - there was no pressure for anything specific and I wore a red top and borrowed a santa hat.

After that I worked in a supermarket where Christmas jumpers were an optional addition to uniform throughout December and they provided antlers/elf hats so I joined in and wore that but kept my ordinary uniform on.

This is the only job I've had where it has been a real thing. As I said, I'm happy enough to join in for appearances sake but I don't see the need to waste money on it.

Mariana I actually like that idea, thankyou!

@GingleJangleScarecrow Oh OK. I honestly thought it was the law. Apologies. The new PJs are still the law though, right?

I've never ever had new PJs for Christmas, child or adult. Am I missing out?

Other than the word in the title, no.

Christmas Jumper day is well-intentioned, but fast fashion or little used clothes contribute to climate change. Better to donate directly to charity.

So if anyone complains, just say you have donated and point out that you are making one small step towards minimising climate change. Ask them to respect your conscience.

I would rather make a donation. I used to work in a small team too and one of my colleagues asked me "Where's your Christmas jumper?"

I replied with "I haven't got one" and left it at that.

I actually didn't find out about it until the day before! So it was too late to go out and buy one. Couldn't be bothered anyway.

I bought a 'Tesco Value' xmas jumper and wear it all thru the xmas period. Was about £5. Yanbu though I hate all this bollocks that's supposedly mandatory. Had you not made it clear you weren't going to, you could have just 'forgot'.

I like the idea of customising your own jumper.
Baubles , tinsel etc
Just shows you’re ...getting in the spirit..of things without totally acquiescing

Nasty acrylic jumper? No way - barrel shaped and menopausal human here who would look like a steaming Christmas pudding in one of those.
At my last school all staff were expected to take part in the secret santa - the beneficiary's name was put into your pigeon hole whether you wanted to take part or not. (School gestapo says, "You vill enjoy yourself!")

I refuse to buy an xmas jumper, it’s such a waste. My sons school is doing xmas jumper day on Friday, I have taken a plain grey sweater and sewn an xmas tree outline on it with some green tinsil and used a fluffy yellow ball from his craft kit for the star.

I pinned a paper tree outline to his sweater first to make sure it would be symmetrical etc, it was easier to do than I thought.
