AIBU?

Fucking Christmas Jumper Day

AIBU and a scrooge?

My work are having a Christmas jumper day. We are a small team so it will be noticed if I don't join in and it has been implied I will be making my team look bad if I refuse.

I don't own a Christmas jumper and I don't want to waste money on something I'll never wear again. The idea is that we bring in a monetary donation and also have a donation tin for clients to donate. I have suggested a local charity for disadvantaged children.

I'd rather put an extra tenner in the donation bucket than spend it on a hideous piece of glittery landfill. I've asked around and nobody has one I can borrow, can't make it round the charity shops before the day and I'm told wearing a festive colour with some tinsel in my hair isn't in the spirit of things.

I don't like Christmas but I'm not outwardly scroogey about it. Unsure if I'm being a total bore and "that person" or if I'm justified in not being arsed with it.

I don't buy my children new ones every year, they have got one each that others have bought them and they wear those a few times over the holidays until they don't fit.

Like Ihatesandwishes I have a christmas jumper that I wear every christmas. Got it from a charity shop so a win-win. I have the option of tacking on those wee battery lights if feeling particularly delusional (never happened yet Grin. Feel your irritation at being forced to participate though.

OP I’d buy that and wear it as much as possible every December Grin

I wear the same one every year too. So they are sort of an investment piece.

Play the environmental card.

My lot all have Christmas jumpers though, but they are mostly at the more tasteful, wear throughout winter, end of the jumper spectrum.

I volunteer in a charity shop and we’ve had loads of Christmas jumpers, t shirts, etc. Might be worth popping in to a couple if you have any nearby. That way you don’t have to pay full price for one and another charity gets a donation too.

(I realise that’s not the real issue though. They shouldn’t be able to bully people into taking part.)

Can you buy nice cotton Christmas pyjamas & just wear the top to work as a t shirt with a nice jacket/cosy cardigan? Pyjamas can be worn all year, never mind the design 😁

I had thought of that DoesNot but I wont be able to go into town between now and the day - my shifts start/end after closing time for most shops.

just get one from a charity shop and then wear it every year
it's much easier than having the conversation

Report
StillWeRise · 09/12/2019 23:43

ah sorry you can't
well then, you can't buy a 'proper' one either- you'll just have to tack some tinsel onto an existing jumper. really unless it's a charity you really hate I think it's easier to go along with this sort of thing

Just stick some baubles on a jumper

Honestly, I don't think anyone will care as much as you imagine they might.

Wear what you want, donate what you want. Tell them last time you checked we still had free will in this country. There’s nothing worse than a charity dictator.

Yep. Just pin baubles and/or tinsel onto an ordinary jumper. That's what I do.

That’s a shame Skate. I’d definitely go with pinning baubles and tinsel to a normal jumper then. If they wanted proper ones, they should have given you more notice!

That one day a year when we're expected to buy a tacky polyester jumper for £15 so we can wear it and bung £1 to charity at work. Or when you're pestered by your kids to buy the naffest item ever so they're not left out eating their Christmas dinner at school. Bah bloody humbug. I bloody hate it!

Just wear any jumper. I do this, and if questioned I say “it is my Christmas jumper”.

This jumper identifies as a Christmas jumper.

Sellotape a piece of paper onto a normal jumper saying "generic Christmas jumper".

If anyone gets miffed simply tell them your doing your bit for charity in a way you feel is best. You don't need to explain anything. If they continue, say something along the lines of " Christmas is meant to be a time of coming together, not singling out/bullying people." Will soon put them in their place.

There are plenty of supermarkets I could buy one from after work, I just wouldn't make it to a charity shop as they're not open in the evening and I object to adding to the waste of it all.

I might have a look on fb selling pages though for something second hand, I don't have the time or the inclination to piss about making anything either. I don't see why it makes a difference as long as I look "festive" but I know they are looking for a "proper" jumper. Probably because there will be photos on the company's website and they want our team to look good.

I wholeheartedly support the charity and it was my suggestion when asked who the proceeds should go to, my objection is with the hypocrisy/ waste as opposed to just wearing something I dislike for a day.
