AIBU?

Fucking Christmas Jumper Day

AIBU and a scrooge?

My work are having a Christmas jumper day. We are a small team so it will be noticed if I don't join in and it has been implied I will be making my team look bad if I refuse.

I don't own a Christmas jumper and I don't want to waste money on something I'll never wear again. The idea is that we bring in a monetary donation and also have a donation tin for clients to donate. I have suggested a local charity for disadvantaged children.

I'd rather put an extra tenner in the donation bucket than spend it on a hideous piece of glittery landfill. I've asked around and nobody has one I can borrow, can't make it round the charity shops before the day and I'm told wearing a festive colour with some tinsel in my hair isn't in the spirit of things.

I don't like Christmas but I'm not outwardly scroogey about it. Unsure if I'm being a total bore and "that person" or if I'm justified in not being arsed with it.

I don't buy my children new ones every year, they have got one each that others have bought them and they wear those a few times over the holidays until they don't fit.

How much notice of this have you had? It seems difficult to understand how you could have had no time whatsoever to pop into a charity shop.

Alternatively, just wear a bright-coloured jumper and tack some tinsel, stars and glitter to it.

What a lot of people who jump on the Christmas jumper day bandwagon don't realise is that it's actually originally a Save the Children charity campaign. I don't know what charity your workplace is fundraising for but it's good that they're keeping it to the spirit in which it was intended, rather than just wearing Xmas jumpers for no real reason

I never wear jumpers due to galloping menopausal over-heating, but I do buy Christmas pyjamas and use the top off them as a Christmas ‘jumper’.... nobody notices and it means that it’s not a once-a-year money waste as I continue to wear the pjs throughout winter.

Equan I was told today for Friday. Most of the close at four or five, I finish work at seven. Not everyone works 9-5 or near enough to the high street to nip out on their dinner break.

Child slaves probably knitted your coworkers jumper.

Agree completely that spending £16 on a jumper for the privilege of donating £2 to a charity is madness

Too right summersun. That is the worse thing about these schemes. The real beneficiaries are either shops or companies trying to show how socially responsible they are.

I don’t buy my children new [Christmas jumpers] every year

Am really hoping your children are old enough for you to squeeze into one of theirs skateaway. I don’t suppose you have a colleague who could lend you one on the basis that you are quite happy with making a donation, just not buying something you don’t need? Alternatively tinsel up an ordinary jumper as suggested and say your children made it for you and they would be very upset if you didn’t wear it.

@SkateAway,

How about printing this out and pinning it to a jumper?

You don't have to have a vulgar, glittery jumper. I have a couple of really nice ones. You can also pick them up in charity shops if you're quick.

Stick tinsel or hang some baubles (with earring style hooks) onto an existing jumper - there's a lot in the press about the environmental impact of single use Christmas jumpers this year so you would be very progressive!

I totally agree with you, OP, why waste money on a jumper you don’t want and you will never wear again, just give a donation for a disadvantaged child instead.

You can easily get one in the charity shops?

I think the Christmas jumper bullying is pathetic. Nothing says Christmas spirit more than bullying your coworkers, friends or family into spending £15 on a sweatshop jumper, in order to raise £1 for people who probably work in the same bloody sweatshop! If you really feel that you can’t say no, then can you get your hands on some fleece, even from an old mattress protector or old white teddy, cut strips off it and sew a trim around the sleeves and neck, ala Santa Claus.

My oldest boy wears the same tee shirt every year, of the grinch that says “Merry whatever”. 😁

You can tell them you meant to pick one up from the supermarket that morning, but they were doing a collection to help children that work in sweatshops to access an education, so you gave your last £20 to them, then realised you’d forgotten your bank card. What are they going to do, tell you that you should have demanded it back? 😁

Ask if someone has one you can borrow.

I just (badly) stitched some tinsel I already had round the bottom, neck and cuffs of a jumper I already owned.

I could afford a Christmas jumper but frankly find the concept wasteful.

Btw - don't do the neck - it's irritating as hell!

Their tough shit then. Too short notice.

I'd be far to hot in a jumper most days, perhaps a Christmas t-shirt. I still think it's rude of work to try and insist, some people will genuinely not have the money.

YANBU, I hate bloody Christmas jumpers, they don’t suit me and I think they’re naff.

However, if other people enjoy them that’s fine. Just don’t expect everybody else to join in.

Ditto enforced jollity.
