Is that an awful present
We used to go wild on each other but now it's more important to us to save money and we have two children who give us more joy to give presents to.
He loves toasties but we dont have a maker any more. He's been talking about them for a few months. Would it be a sad present to get?

I think it was this one but sadly all the OP's comments have been deleted

Mine is a Waring one. It's the first one that hasnt created an oozing mess when making a toastie

TattiePants · 10/12/2019 13:47

In the past DH has had a panini maker, George Foreman and an egg poacher for Christmas. He loved (and requested) them all.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 10/12/2019 14:06

God I want a toasted sandwich now.

I found out my mum's secret ingredient a few weeks ago but I don't have a toastie maker any more - as a result of being in the dark re. said secret ingredient, my toasties always leaked and cleaning was a nightmare. Curses!

reader, it's mashed potato

Eeeeek2 · 10/12/2019 14:15

@YourOpinionIsNoted what? how? Full details required, how much, does it need to be hot before putting in?

Shutupanddance1 · 10/12/2019 14:18

I bought mine a coffee grinder as he wants one Confused hoping now he likes it! He asked for proper whiskey glasses as well Hmm

SquishyLint · 10/12/2019 14:22

I bought my husband one a few years ago along with a recipe book. He bloody loved it.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 10/12/2019 14:30

The waffle maker has separate plates for waffles and toasties

Was my Xmas pressie last year!

YourOpinionIsNoted · 10/12/2019 14:40

Cold, leftover mash, eeeek. Raw egg, whisked, grated cheese, mash. Add other stuff as you fancy. Curry powder was a staple of my eighties childhood! It cooks and puffs up like an omelette inside. Delicious. I've been making them for years without the mash and wondering why I needed half a block of cheddar to get the required consistency.

motortroll · 10/12/2019 14:41

No advice but following as seems a great idea fit my daughters 13th bday. She always uses the frying pan and makes a right bloody mess!!

Eeeeek2 · 10/12/2019 15:24

YourOpinionIsNoted Thank you we’re having mash tonight so will try tomorrow!

HariboLecter · 10/12/2019 15:31

Have a Breville one with removable plates that can go in the dishwasher, I want toasties for tea tonight Grin

queenofttheyorkies · 10/12/2019 15:36

I've bought my husband one !
Amongst other things he's been going on about them for months and seeing as I don't like them it will 100% be his Grin

cultmaskid · 10/12/2019 15:55

I got one for my partner a few years ago. We love it! It's one which is just flat, not got the grooves. So it's easy to clean and can by used to grill other things like burgers and vegetables. We use it every day. It's similar to this. www.johnlewis.com/breville-vst071-duracermic-cafe-style-sandwich-press-stainless-steel/p3079301

BigFatBloomers · 10/12/2019 22:22

@cultmaskid I think it was after a hacking/security incident and some people got their profiles deleted) or something)

Swizol · 19/12/2019 18:44

Great idea , buy George Forman type , asda do one its fantastic , even with GF bread.

EvaHarknessRose · 19/12/2019 19:02

Cute present.

Ticklemeelmo · 19/12/2019 19:04

I've had the same toastie maker for about 20 years! It is a pain to clean after using it but definitely worth getting one, they taste so much better than those pocket ones

randomblokefromessex · 19/12/2019 19:14

He won't care what you buy him and he obviously knows your financial situation. A toastie maker is a great present. If you want to add an extra touch put some "coupons" with it which he can redeem with you for you to make him a toastie of his choice with it.

EnglishRose1320 · 19/12/2019 19:29

Just read the whole thread and can see you've bought him one. I think it's a great present. I'd be tempted to make a hamper up, with some nice cheeses, beans, some other fillings etc, maybe a book of toastie recipes (Yeap they are a thing) and his favourite drink to have with toasties.

I don't think you need to do that by the way, I think a toastie is great in itself but you seemed worried about it being enough and a toastie themed hamper seems a way to make it a bit more special for him without blowing the bank.

Commonwasher · 19/12/2019 22:10

That’s a great idea... I want a toasty maker for Christmas now. I like practical presents related to food. What would be even better is a toasty maker with a little personal present also. If that’s not over budget.

Earslaps · 19/12/2019 22:27

I love my panini press, but I have to admit I do miss the old style Breville one that sealed the edges. The toasties must be made with cheap white sliced bread too for maximum authenticity.

When I was young I used to love mincemeat toasties- like a cheat's mince pie!

ChristmasConcert · 19/12/2019 23:40

If you want sealed corners you need a proper toastie maker. I have the equivalent of this which I bought in the 80s and it's still going strong! The plates don't go in the dishwasher but you just wipe the butter off with a bit of kitchen roll when it's cool - so easy.
