Is that an awful present
We used to go wild on each other but now it's more important to us to save money and we have two children who give us more joy to give presents to.
He loves toasties but we dont have a maker any more. He's been talking about them for a few months. Would it be a sad present to get?

Well it's my dh's main present this year so... He wants one since the last one died. This is a Breville and a bit higher spec. Grin

AlternativePerspective · 10/12/2019 07:43

I really, really want one of the deep filled ones but sadly they’re a nightmare as you generally have to hatchet the bread to fit in them so I gave up on my last one.

But, over the years I have had: pasta machine, waffle maker, optigrill, set of saucepans, and a kitchenaid all of which have been well used over time. The Optigrill has died now and because of space I haven’t bought a new one and there’s now a slow cooker in its place, but the rest are still going strong.

That being said, my dad bought my mum a deep fat frier one year and he’s never lived it down. Grin

blametheparents · 10/12/2019 07:47

I've bought my student DS a sandwich toaster for Xmas. You can't go through uni without a toasted sandwich!
I kind of wish I had bought myself one too, maybe we can try it out before he heads back to uni so that I can get my fix!

Agreed - panini press is not as good. Thought I was being all grown up by getting one Grin and it's just not the same!

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2019 07:54

We’ve got a Cuisinart one. It’s excellent, easy to clean because you can take the hotplates out.

We also have a really cheap waffle maker - I got it from a charity shop about a year ago, but I think it’s an Argos Cookworks one - which we use at least once a week. Will replace it when it dies!

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 10/12/2019 07:56

We bought ourselves one this week! The Salter 3 in 1 mentioned above, does propper toasties, waffles and paninis! Waffles take forever so are definitely a weekend thing but the panini press and toastie plates are excellent. I love it!

dementedpixie · 10/12/2019 08:00

I've got a deep fill one with removable plates that doesnt make a mess. I'd have to check what make it is though

Pascha · 10/12/2019 08:09

I love this thread Crown Grin. All my family think kitchen appliances are terrible presents but I would be over the moon if I received one.

20viona · 10/12/2019 08:18

This thread is epic as I am trying to decide which to buy my husband! He also likes a sealed edges toastie

AlternativePerspective · 10/12/2019 08:21

Which bread do people buy for the sealed ones though as IME you always have to cut off the crusts/buy smaller loaves etc etc etc. I just want one where I can put my normal bread in and get a toasty at the end of it, and they don’t seem to exist other than the presses which isn’t what I want.

Sparklybaublefest · 10/12/2019 08:22

I am so tempted to buy one for every one in my family Grin

SagelyNodding · 10/12/2019 08:28

I got one for DS1 for his 11th birthday last year! He loves it an we use it more often than we should... It's the Lidl 3 in 1 (waffles, panini, toastie) and its great!

Trumpton · 10/12/2019 08:29

I love our Breville one . Love the fact the plates pop out and go into dishwasher .
Erm.....I have bought DH a kettle for Christmas and we still have a perfectly good one ! But this one has a temperature control so he can have it stop at the right temperature for his geeky coffee making malarkey . He is ,honestly, going to be so thrilled !

burblish · 10/12/2019 08:55

I asked DH to get me the Salter 3 in 1 deep fill toastie/waffle/panini maker for Christmas this year, so it’s clearly an excellent gift idea!

cultmaskid · 10/12/2019 08:57

@Sparklybaublefest that honestly sounds like something my husband would do 😂

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 10/12/2019 09:51

I had a Breville one for my birthday. It's easy to clean as the plates go in the dishwasher. I haven't had a bean toastie for years! That's my lunch sorted.

Instagrump · 10/12/2019 10:36

I'd happily accept one! I've asked DH for a Copper Stone pan set (omfg JML didn't half do something right there! They're awesome!)
DH and I love practical gifts we can get use of. Last year he got me an electric mixer amongst other things.

ActualHornist · 10/12/2019 10:57

There was a thread about breville toastie makers a couple of years ago - I bought one because of it!

You can cook fried eggs and all sorts in the divots. Really handy.

Also I agree - sure the panini press is nice, but a totally sealed cheese and bean toastie that burns out he roof of your mouth off is the only way to go.

nornironrock · 10/12/2019 11:09

I'm a husband.

I love toasties.

If I didn't have a maker, I'd love one!!

But, if you can afford to, perhaps a little something that's just for him also? It can be difficult to make each other feel special and important when there are kids to focus on.

Smellbow · 10/12/2019 11:11

I got one for my birthday nearly 10 years ago - still ranks among my best ever presents Grin You can change the plates and make waffles too.

Snuffkindle · 10/12/2019 11:20

I am getting my husband one. But in fairness, it is not a surprise, he has asked for it as our (very) old one is making an unpleasant fizzing sound when plugged in. It'll definitely be a Breville for us. The kids don't even call them toasties. They ask for a cheese breville Xmas Smile

cultmaskid · 10/12/2019 13:29

@nornironrock are you from NI I love the name

Yes I got him trainers for tennis as well as his are a bit stamped down from all the jumping about

OP posts:
cultmaskid · 10/12/2019 13:29

Ps I got it today
Now to wrap it 🤪

OP posts:
nornironrock · 10/12/2019 13:31

@cultmaskid I am indeed - although have been in England more years than I care to count!!!

Now he has no excuse not to make you plenty of toasties too!!!

BigFatBloomers · 10/12/2019 13:36

An excellent present!
As @ActualHornist says above, there was a brilliant thread a couple of years ago where a poster had her kids doing live action cooking. They made all sorts of amazing things you wouldn't imagine doing in a toastie maker - omlette springs to mind but there were other things too.

Might be worth searching for it.

cultmaskid · 10/12/2019 13:39

@BigFatBloomers that sounds great
I cook everything in this house so I am looking forward to a rest!!
