Would you use frozen brussel sprouts for Christmas lunch?

DieHardISaChristmasFilm · 08/12/2019 12:44

Noideawhatusername · 08/12/2019 12:49

Thank you. That settles it then.

I use frozen sprouts all the time, they are never soggy.

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 08/12/2019 12:52

I like the Strong Roots chargrilled sprouts. They are halved but they're very nice and not at all soggy, and also come with balsamic butter.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 08/12/2019 12:55

I have used frozen sprouts

Never soggy. Never awful

Delicious

SarahTancredi · 08/12/2019 12:59

Why would you ruin an xmas dinner with sprouts in the first place. Fresh or frozen.

balletpanda · 08/12/2019 13:12

We use them all the time, they're delicious when cooked properly so I'd say go for it!

unfortunateevents · 08/12/2019 13:22

I usually prepare the sprouts sometime in November, blanch them and freeze, then on the day they just need a slightly shorter period of cooking and they are perfect! (If you like sprouts that is, which I don't!) If that is the kind of freezing you mean, then go for it!

Azzizam · 08/12/2019 13:23

Absolutely love soggy frozen sprouts for myself but probably wouldn't serve them to anyone else.

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 08/12/2019 13:51

Yes of course. They're fine and fry really well. They also work well when roasted and/or made into a soup.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 08/12/2019 13:54

I always understood that sprouts were best after there had been a nice hard frost on the plant (ah, memories of frozen fingers picking them from the garden with Mum on Christmas eve...). That being the case, why would packet frozen sprouts be any different?

mrsbyers · 08/12/2019 13:57

No I’d use fresh but often use frozen at other times - I’ve been known to sit with a bowl of sprouts when watching a film , loads of white pepper on - delicious

mrsbyers · 08/12/2019 13:58

As an aside we cook most of our veg on Christmas Eve , store overnight in cold garage and add butter and zap in microwave - perfect every time

RedSheep73 · 08/12/2019 13:58

No, but I hate sprouts anyway so they be coming anywhere near my Christmas dinner!

Elphame · 08/12/2019 13:59

No - the are horrible. Fresh all the way

Durgasarrow · 08/12/2019 14:11

They should always be fresh and they should be cooked in the oven on a cookie sheet tossed with olive oil and garlic, cut in half, for 20 minutes.

KatherineJaneway · 08/12/2019 14:14

No, they don't freeze well

Omashu · 08/12/2019 14:16

I think they’re lovely frozen! I bought some the other month and sautéed them. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were Grin

Bippety · 08/12/2019 14:16

Only if cooked in a steamer, if boiled they go into a mushy mess.

Butterfly02 · 08/12/2019 14:23

I have they're never soggy.
There's only me and one dc that eats them so frozen means they don't go off.

kmc1111 · 08/12/2019 14:27

If they’re being roasted or sautéed then yes, if boiled or steamed then no.

rslsys · 08/12/2019 14:37

Too late for proper Christmas sprouts now anyway. They should've been put on to boil in September . . .

Sgtmajormummy · 08/12/2019 14:45

Absolutely fine. Large Iceland bags for £1 do the job no prob.
And please remember a cross cut into the base of fresh Brussels sprouts is not needed.
Some people MURDER their sprouts at Christmas, boiling them for far longer than necessary.
Just a quick boil from frozen and mix with garlic and bacon bits in butter or oil.
Or (excuse my French) “Smashed” and baked with chili flavoured
olive oil, cheese and crunchy, herby breadcrumbs on top.

So yummy I eat them all year round and frozen lets me do that.

Saltnpepper5 · 08/12/2019 14:48

We have them alot, cooked in the steamer they are delicious and never soggy.
