Would you use frozen brussel sprouts for Christmas lunch?

Reheated sprouts aren't great except in bubble and squeak. Very different from freshly cooked. I love Brussels sprouts, but they need care as they're a lot less nice if they're overcooked. I used frozen once, roasted them, wasn't that impressed.

ferrier · 08/12/2019 15:52

Too late for proper Christmas sprouts now anyway. They should've been put on to boil in September . . .

Xmas Grin

To another pp, if you don't like Brussels sprouts how can you possibly be in a position to say that frozen are fine? Xmas Hmm

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 08/12/2019 15:53

Frozen sprouts are horrible.

I don’t know why as most frozen veg is fine but sprouts are just horrible when you buy frozen.

Fresh sprouts all the way.....

stripeypillowcase · 08/12/2019 15:54

yes, but I never boil them.
in a frying pan with a little butter (or oil) breadcrumbs and cinnamon.
yum

Cantsleeppast3am · 08/12/2019 15:55

Pink heart that's so weird, I can't stand frozen veg except sprout!!

Likethebattle · 08/12/2019 16:01

@rslsys they should be put on a low heat on Boxing Day at the latest!

MitziK · 08/12/2019 16:19

They are perfectly fine if plunged into rapidly boiling water and removed the instant they go bright, luminous green.

DP won't countenance them, though. So he gets to sit on the settee on Christmas morning, painstakingly stripping ropey looking leaves and slicing crosses on the underside whilst I drink Caffeine Bombs and get progressively more and more mellow

SilverySurfer · 08/12/2019 16:21

Yuk no.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 08/12/2019 17:03

Frozen sprouts are the worst frozen veg I’ve ever tasted. Maybe I got a bad batch, but I won’t be risking it again.

FizzyIce · 08/12/2019 17:05

Hell to the no.. tried it once (luckily not for Christmas dinner) and they were squidgy and absolutely tasteless

SoftBlocks · 08/12/2019 17:06

No way they do not survive the freezing process. They are disgusting!

Fresh sprouts otoh are delicious.

Ponoka7 · 08/12/2019 17:08

I wouldn't.

I would use frozen, sprouts, mushrooms and parsnips, if I had to, but they aren't a patch on the fresh versions.

MonstranceClock · 08/12/2019 17:10

No. All frozen veg is disgusting.

pigsDOfly · 08/12/2019 17:13

I really like brussel sprouts but frozen ones are horrible.

Having said that, apart from frozen peas, I've yet to find a frozen vegetable that I find acceptable. But then I can't stand mushy vegetables of any kind.

I think there's too much water in most vegetable to withstand freezing, even the professional freezing of commercial standards.

simonisnotme · 08/12/2019 17:14

frozen sprouts are fine, we eat them with pies as well as turkey/pork
and mint sauce stirred into the gravy
frozen veg is in no way disgusting, better than fresh thats sat in the fridge for a week

woogal · 08/12/2019 17:15

I've never found frozen sprouts to be soggy.

Rainbunny · 08/12/2019 17:17

I use frozen brussel sprouts all the time and they always come out perfectly - roasted with caramelized crisp outsides but firm but tender. You have to know how to prepare them and the the most important thing to remember is that the oven needs to be HOT! Oh and never, ever thaw them first!

Instagrump · 08/12/2019 17:21

They're okay. Not fantastic but still taste nice. Fresh sprouts keep for ages in a cold fridge so it's not like there's much of a difference convenience wise. Just buy fresh in the run up to Christmas.

Rainbunny · 08/12/2019 17:26

Roasted frozen brussel sprouts - roast them in olive oil, season with salt and pepper and they turn out wonderfully! You can also drizzle some balsamic reduction on them halfway.

Yes I use frozen Brussels. Not soggy. I also use frozen roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing balls and other frozen veg. Easy to cook on Christmas Day and taste delicious

AnneTyler12345 · 09/12/2019 18:46

LOL, I literally just read another thread on frozen sprouts - hot topic! YES, delicious and they work. Here is our new treat too - roast the leaves as well, so good, my kids who spit out any form of greenery are prepared to take them down. No extra work, zero waste and a great crunch!

LakieLady · 09/12/2019 19:18

I find the frozen ones lack flavour compared to fresh. But I get them very fresh, picked from my mate's allotment an hour or two before we eat.

The allotment is only a 5 minute walk away. The only way I could get fresher ones would be to grow my own.

Rocsand03 · 09/12/2019 19:20

Yeah you could have a water bomb fight at the table!! Haha.... nope better with traditional sprouts x

BeatriceTheBeast · 09/12/2019 19:23

I've only ever boiled them and they've been horrid. Might try them sauteed though and would use for Christmas if the experiment turned out well.
