Would you use frozen brussel sprouts for Christmas lunch?

I've bought some, with bacon. The instructions are to fry them so they must already be cooked. Hoping they are not soggy as we all love Brussels here.

Babdoc · 09/12/2019 20:00

The only frozen veg that are ok are peas, baby broad beans and sweet corn. All the others are beyond disgusting!
However, I have no skin in this game as my adult DC refuse sprouts at Christmas- I make a hot shredded red cabbage, apple and onion mix, with red wine, a splash of cider vinegar, clove and cinnamon. Much more colourful and festive!

SentimentalKiller · 09/12/2019 20:03

I use them all the time. I gave them to a friend who is a chef. He commented how nice the meal was and that he could tell my sprouts were fresh. I have never told him

MistyCloud · 09/12/2019 20:04

Absolute nonsense that they frozen are always soggy.

MistyCloud · 09/12/2019 20:04

*the frozen

Mrsjayy · 09/12/2019 20:06

I have frozen Brussels all year round they never are mushy and horrible they taste like well Brussels Sprouts , if I had Christmas dinner at home I would use them.

Jamhandprints · 09/12/2019 20:09

Theyre fine frozen, basically the same when cooked. I only ever bring frozen veg to the boil, then switch straight off.

Always use frozen. Nowt wrong with them.

Lunde · 09/12/2019 20:17

No - too watery and squishy

Andylion · 09/12/2019 20:20

Only if cooked in a steamer, if boiled they go into a mushy mess.

I have frozen, steamed sprouts at least twice a week. They are never soggy.

MerryDeath · 09/12/2019 20:24

i've never tried but frozen veg is my new found land of wonder so i'll seek them out!

Andylion · 09/12/2019 20:28

@MeryyDeath, it all depends on the timing, just as it would when cooking fresh vegetables.

On Friday, I steamed carrots, sprouts, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli and peas, from frozen. They all came out perfectly because I followed the timings on the package.

I live alone so it is the best way to get a variety of vegetables without waste.

Mrsjayy · 09/12/2019 20:51

Queenoftheashes · 09/12/2019 20:53

I have frozen sprouts and they’re really nasty

Coffeeisnecessary · 09/12/2019 20:56

I'm doing all frozen stuff this year, I just can't be bothered with Christmas! Tried the frozen sprouts from tesco with bacon, delicious! Mashed Swede, red cabbage and apple, honey glazed parsnips... I'm just too lazy to cook from scratch this year!!

MorganKitten · 09/12/2019 20:58

I won’t eat brussel sprouts full stop.

PurpleCrowbar · 09/12/2019 21:09

I'd go with fresh steamed sprouts all the way. As I'm unlikely to cook that quantity of veg any other time, it seems worth the bother of picking off the manky bits (& saving for stock), & then steaming a big pile of the buggers.

I love them, & wouldn't thank you for fancying them up with bits of bacon or chestnuts or whatever. Just steam them so they're crunchy & delicious & taste of sprouts! The sprout haters will NOT suddenly be convinced just because you've mucked about with them. Everyone knows whether they like sprouts or not.

Frozen sprouts - yep, perfectly edible, not as good. Wouldn't bother myself; if you like sprouts, buy fresh ones. If you aren't a fan, just skip having sprouts?! Other vegetables are available...

PurpleCrowbar · 09/12/2019 21:12

.

But seriously, lots of people HATE sprouts. If no one likes them, don't bother!

tillytrotter1 · 09/12/2019 22:21

I only ever buy frozen peas and frozen sweetcorn, never carrots or anything 'leafy', including sprouts,
