Spent hours scraping wallpaper off, and only managed to do half of the wall. Surely that has to be a better and quicker way to do this without steam? Now I regret not painting over it Sad

You don't need a steamer. Mix a cap full of fabric softener with warm water and spray onto the wallpaper. It will soften and scrape off easily

Steamers can wreck plaster. I just did woodchip removal, so fun, not. Score paper with a good sharp blade, I used a Stanley knife then soak, do like 5 feet square, do the next 5 feet, go back to the first one, it’ll be ready to scrape off.

Popuppippa · 08/12/2019 12:33

Yes to adding fabric softener to the water.

Score the surface use hot water/fabric softener/washing up liquid (just a little or it will foam too much). Saturate it and allow it to really soak in. Use a really good scraper and it should come away easily.

That pic. looks like you've done really well so far. It's worth doing it properly as you'll get a much better finish.

Never had a problem with the plaster.

You can buy wallpaper steamers dirt cheaply at the hardware. I also works fantastically on lino (pull up the plasticy part and steam the paper part). It will be done in a 5th of the time.

Mrscog · 08/12/2019 12:49

Hot water with vinegar too is good - score the paper then daub with water all over, leave then scrape after 10 mins

MrsEricBana · 08/12/2019 13:36

I bought a Bosch steamer from Homebase. Not expensive. Fantastic.

If its been painted with gloss you need to score it first.
Wipe the wall over with water, go have a cup of tea, come back and do it again. Repeat all day until the paper is sodden then strip it, it will fall off.

I'm a decorator and will say that while a steamer makes things easier in the long run, there is nothing worse than hearing that gentle pop when the plaster underneath gives way.

You need a good sharp solid scraper, the type with the removable blades.

Jessbow · 08/12/2019 14:17

score and spray with a plant sprayer. Warm water, fabric softener .

Spray thoroughly and walk away for 5 mins, then spray again.before scraping

HaileySherman · 08/12/2019 14:27

Hot water and fabric softener in a spray bottle with a good metal scraper. Name brand fabric softener works better than dollar store/generic stuff also....i found out the hard way on that.
