so my hv comes to visit me today as she has been helping me with routines for dc, and i totally forgot she was coming.she arrived to a messy frontroom a naked toddler and me in my lovely pink dressing gown.I have been having a shitty few days for no particular reason, so she starts telling me i dont seem my normal self (this im aware of) and then start waffling on about going to the gp for medication.I mean ffs can i not have an off day and not have to pretend that im a fuckin stepford mother just because she wants me to.i just think she was wrong to just say that to me so easily

tori32,

I made the same mistake as you. Like you it seem irrational to be depressed. I had a lovely husband, a nice home. Postnatal depression affects women from all social classes, rich, poor, all levels of education and all walks of life. It can happen to any woman.

The fact is that postnatal depression is often hormonal. There doesn't have to be logical reason to be depressed. Its a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Incidently I am now fully recovered, but it took quite a long time.

tori32, I hope that you are feeling better. Postnatal depression is truely evil.

fawkeoff · 23/08/2007 22:07

i understand what ur all saying and thankyou so much for the concern and advice, but im not pretending ok but really depressed, the whole problem i had was that she only just stepped her foot in my door and was making assumptions about my mental health.

Great news Fawkeoff! I do think the health visitor sounded a bit quick off the mark.
By all means sit and chat and get an idea of your mood and THEN offer help if needed, but to walk in and go straight into the drugs chat isn't helpful for anyone.

Oh and if HV think people who seem to have it together most of the time are suffering PND, then I'm stuffed - house is immaculate at the moment as it is up for sale! (normally a bit on the scrufty side )

Meeely2 · 24/08/2007 12:33

you are still in denial FO - EVERYONE is depressed!

fawkeoff · 24/08/2007 14:34

the doctor agreed with MEshe thought it was unprofessional for her to have done that,as even if i was depressed there are other ways to try and tackle depression other than throwing pills at ppl )

redfraggle I didn't mean immaculate with good reason. To give an example my best friend had severe post natal depression. She was working full time as a teacher, breastfeeding and coming home having to mark books, but her house was emaculate. She admitted that if anyone said they might be visiting she would get up at 5am everyday to clean through the house. That was her symptom because she wanted it to look as if she was totally in control when she wasn't.
