So I just saw the show where they made people who needed glasses take them off and see what they could see (not much), for laughs and prizes.
I have very low eyesight and that really made me really cross that they make fun of peoples disabilities like that. They wouldn't ask someone in a wheelchair to just 'crawl along the floor, go on, just for our amusement '? Aibu to be so sensitive or was it banter? Xx

I didn't watch it, but putting myself in that position I would absolutely hate someone taking my glasses away. With -10 prescription I would not be able to see anything clearly and would feel very vulnerable. Making it acceptable to take people's glasses away from them is not a good idea in my opinion, maybe it's ok for people with lower prescriptions but not for me.

Bloody hell it was a set up for the proposal , no one was humiliated and I’d imagine from the way they chose the random participants they’d been asked at the start if they would be prepared to take part - it was funny but it wasn’t laughing at a disability

BlaueLagune · 08/12/2019 16:45

Has everyone lost their sense of humour

Yes people have become very ego-centric and get offended about everything.

It's like that bit in Bake Off about a bake being "diabetes on a plate". People DO know the difference between type 1 and type 2, and also know that not everyone who has type 2 overate to get it. But they also know that if you eat too much processed sugar you are more likely to get type 2.

It must be really difficult to be a comedian these days as everyone gets offended over everything.

For what it's worth I thought that section was a bit rubbish and I think public proposals are tacky (and what happens if she says no)? But that's a different issue entirely.

BlaueLagune · 08/12/2019 16:46

And yes, the participants were not random at all - he knew their names in advance!

I'm sorry that people stealing my glasses at school and not giving them back isn't the massive belly laugh that you seem to think that it should be.

I don't find this remotely funny. I really don't care that you do find it funny.
But I will judge anyone that overlooks other peoples experiences and can't see how they would find this somewhat disturbing.

people stealing my glasses at school and not giving them back

Nothing at all like the segment on this show then.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/12/2019 18:53

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn

Way to miss the point.

You also shouldn’t compare needing glasses to needing a wheelchair...

Arnoldthecat · 08/12/2019 18:57

Regarding disability, it is for the individual to identify if they feel less abled. Remember that myopia (short sightedness) can vary greatly from very mild (no specs needed) to low prescription to someone needing lens replacement. Myopia can also cause blindness so it is not a matter for frivolity.

Schuyler · 08/12/2019 19:01

@arnoldthecat
Yes, it’s up to a person if they do or don’t feel comfortable using the term disabled about themselves but equally, disabled is also a legal term.

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/12/2019 19:03

I saw that part of the show and I thought it was in bad taste and switched channels.

roiseandjim · 08/12/2019 19:28
Thanks
CurlyMango · 08/12/2019 19:33

I thought it was awful. Not funny at all.

Brimful · 08/12/2019 19:34

I used to have a -9 prescription - Iwouldn't be offended at all by the show.

Ridiculously over sensitive.

purpleme12 · 08/12/2019 20:04

I am minus 7, 8 or somewhere like that anyway. Short sighted. No way would I have been able to see the objects on the stage at all. I'm not offended.

But what's with the hotel rooms in the midnight gameshow bit?! It looks really drab and boring. Odd walls
