To be pissed off at Michael McIntyre

So I just saw the show where they made people who needed glasses take them off and see what they could see (not much), for laughs and prizes.
I have very low eyesight and that really made me really cross that they make fun of peoples disabilities like that. They wouldn't ask someone in a wheelchair to just 'crawl along the floor, go on, just for our amusement '? Aibu to be so sensitive or was it banter? Xx

I don’t think that people whose eye sight is less negative than -5 are really qualified to post on this thread. I have had eyesight of -4. I remember what it was like. It is undoubtedly slightly inconvenient. But it is a completely different world to having eye sight of -12.

Redyoyo · 07/12/2019 23:14

But the people on the show told Michael their prescription no one was under -3.5 NO ONE WAS BLIND or disabled!
I wear glasses every day i do not class this as a disability, if i was registered blind then yes thats completely different but thats not what the segment on the show was about and the OP is being offensive to people like your daughter who are genuinely disabled.

Stayinin · 07/12/2019 23:14

@StoutDrinker2019 thank you for your comment but I'm too far gone for that now. This isn't about me, per se. I was worried I was too over sensitive to a condition I have and I shouldn't be. There are far worse disabilities (not to play top trumps) and I didnt meant to offend anyone who has any disability. It was NOT about the proposal. The people before that may have been (probably were) actors . It was just that he was using something that someone can't do against them (actors or not) for jokes. But I realise I am being too sensitive so thank you all for your input.

You are being pathetic.

user1473878824 · 07/12/2019 23:15

@Moominmammaatsea oh for fuck’s sake how ridiculous. Yes of course your child has a disability. But for 99% needing glasses isn’t the same as needing a wheelchair and the OP is being equally ridiculous.

MistyCloud · 07/12/2019 23:17

@Stayinin

Thank you mistycloud. Smile

That's OK. Smile

The vast majority of the comments on here are disagreeing with you, but the poll says different. Over a quarter of 300 people so far, are in agreement with you. That's why I like being able to add a poll, because people are able to illustrate that they agree, without having to comment (and be flamed/challenged/attacked for their views!)

I am very pleased for the people with very poor vision/failing eyesight who are able to laugh about it, (and laugh at people taking the piss out of it.) However some people don't find it so hilarious. Hmm

And people are having a right go at the OP for saying 'you wouldn't take the piss out of someone in a wheelchair.' But she was just trying to illustrate that it's not fair to have a pop at people with very poor eyesight/failing eyesight. (When you wouldn't have a go at someone in a wheelchair.) She clearly meant no harm, and she DID say in her OP that she has VERY poor eyesight. FGS give her a break. She is quite entitled to be pissed off about it, without being slaughtered for it on here!

And yes I know this is AIBU, but people can say they disagree without being so harsh, and without trying to make the OP feel like shit. There are some bloody ridiculously snarky comments on here.

@Louise91417

I need singing lessons because i cant sing..does that make me disabled. Confused

What the hell are you on about?

fromthefloorboardsup · 07/12/2019 23:17

I have pretty poor eyesight without my glasses and have never considered it a disability. Just a pain in the arse like someone else said. I think it's far more common to need glasses than to not. I don't know many people who don't need glasses at all. I didn't think it was laughing at the people as much as laughing at the shit prizes they were trying to win!

MistyCloud · 07/12/2019 23:19

@Stayinin

I should say over a quarter of 334 people are in agreement with you.

It was 300 when I started composing my last post!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/12/2019 23:21

@Redyoyo you can't use someones prescription to tell how blind they are, mine is -1.5 but I have other issues so still only have 20/100 vision with my glasses on. This is unlikely to be the case in the show but I think your comment shows a lack of understanding.

Moominmammaatsea · 07/12/2019 23:23

@PurpleDaisies I hear you! There's so much anti-disabled sentiment on this thread. Your daughter is a faker because she can take a few steps out of her wheelchair and mine because, although she is registered blind, the glasses she wears mean that her sight is corrected to 20/20, obviously. The truth is that my daughter's specs maximise on the 8% vision she retains (and is probably likely to lose in the next few years) so it really royally pees me off when posters are pretending that they're not disablist because their second-cousin-twice-removed wears glasses due to short-sightedness so it's ok for them to make jokes at the expense of the visually impaired. Sod that.

Topazance · 07/12/2019 23:26

Agree with others. It was to set up the proposal.

Moominmammaatsea · 07/12/2019 23:29

@user1473878824 it seems that being disablist is the last bastion of being an (acceptably) absolute ignorant twat here. Nah, I'm not being ridiculous. I'm simply defending the rights of my disabled child not to be the laughing stock of the general public, because, you know, wearing glasses, and having visual impairments, is funny, no?

MistyCloud · 07/12/2019 23:32

@Moominmammaatsea Flowers

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/12/2019 23:33

Moominmammaatsea

Totally with you, this thread is shocking.

MistyCloud · 07/12/2019 23:37

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I agree with @Moominmammaatsea too (and a few others.) The minimising - and mocking - of peoples worries, and things that upset them (as well as conditions/impairments/disabilities,) from SOME people on this thread is quite shocking.

user1473878824 · 07/12/2019 23:39

@Moominmammaatsea well I’m wearing my glasses to be able to type this. I’m not disabled. Yes YOUR daughter is but most people who wear glasses are not.

Creepster · 07/12/2019 23:40

Molly Ivins used to write about the difference between punching up and punching down.
Punching down is never funny ha ha though we often do laugh from embarrassment.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 07/12/2019 23:43

Oh piss off, I'm extremely short sighted, my sister and brother are both blind as bats. As is my DS, DD, sil and nieces...... and we've already stolen the idea for a Christmas game and been planning it on messenger (( Christmas lucky dip style )) You must be exhausted getting so wound up about fuck all, all the time. Hmm

madcatladyforever · 07/12/2019 23:44

I don't think it's offensive but he used to be funny and isn't any more with this idiotic show.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 07/12/2019 23:46

Oh and I'm a minus 8.......ds is minus 9 or so.

Pretty good chance I'll go blind at some point due to glaucoma rampaging through both sides of my family yet I still found it hilarious 💁🏻‍♀️

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 07/12/2019 23:47

YABU for watching him in the first place. He's nowhere near funny.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 07/12/2019 23:48

None of the people in that part of the show were disabled. Not one. They were simply short sighted. There is a difference.

I wear glasses because I am short sighted, that doesn't make me disabled and it's not the same as having a visual impairment that is a disability.

Stayinin · 07/12/2019 23:51

@FoamingAt. Please tell me why you would think I get 'so wound up about fuck all, all the time'? I merely expressed a feeling and wasnt sure if I was being unreasonable in my reaction so posted here. Sorry I thought that was what Aibu was for? Do correct me if I am wrong.

OP posts:
NemophilistRebel · 07/12/2019 23:51

I agree eyesight is in line with deafness as disabilities go.

In fact when you can’t see and correction can’t be done it’s more debilitating.

No one would think it’s funny to take the piss out of a deaf person so why make it ok to do it to people who can’t see?

FoamingAtTheUterus · 07/12/2019 23:55

Op, you compared someone wearing glasses to someone in a wheelchair being forced to crawl along the floor.

Now you just have a think about that and think about why it might be seen as both hysterical and abhorrent.

Oh and in my spare time, when I'm not crashing into lamp posts I'm also a carer for my DC who actually do have disabilities........their slightly shit eyesight doesn't even register.
