To be pissed off at Michael McIntyre

So I just saw the show where they made people who needed glasses take them off and see what they could see (not much), for laughs and prizes.
I have very low eyesight and that really made me really cross that they make fun of peoples disabilities like that. They wouldn't ask someone in a wheelchair to just 'crawl along the floor, go on, just for our amusement '? Aibu to be so sensitive or was it banter? Xx

FFS it's banter

The word 'banter' is vile. It's almost always used to excuse behaviour that others find hurtful or offensive. I am suspicious of any behaviour which is excused on the grounds of its being 'banter'.

NemophilistRebel · 08/12/2019 09:34

I have diplopia and have been on waiting list for around 22 months for surgery and have to wear special glasses that although help make me look weird and without them I’m totally cross eyed

It’s really not funny for someone to take the piss out of crappy eyesight

I wouldn’t wish this on an enemy

I wouldn’t wish wearing normal glasses on anyone either.

countdowntochristmas · 08/12/2019 09:37

Ffs it's not a disability !!
It was set up for a proposal it was funny and very lovely . If you didn't watch it then you can't really comment and if you did and you think it was yabu.

. It sounds Victorian, like visiting asylums to laugh at "lunatics".
No wrong watch it ffs , some people will literally complain and find anything offensive. I really wish I had these problems Hmm

countdowntochristmas · 08/12/2019 09:37

And I also have bad eyesight and wear glasses .

ArchieStar · 08/12/2019 09:39

@WatchingTheMoon

Had to go back and read what you meant, apologies I worded my sleep deprived post badly! I agree with you on that point, short sightedness is really not comparable to a wheelchair, and really rather dramatic to do! I actually can’t think of any disabilities that are genuinely comparable because until you’ve walked in their shoes (or wore their glasses; bad pun) you don’t know how that affects them. My daughter will need a wheelchair when she is older, despite her being able to walk and I wouldn’t dream of comparing her to someone that cannot walk at all.

Spinderellacutituponetime · 08/12/2019 09:39

MM is an idiot and not at all funny so what do you expect?

Iamnotagoddess · 08/12/2019 09:46

FFS seriously?

NemophilistRebel · 08/12/2019 09:50

People just saying it’s fine because it’s not a disability - how nasty can you be?

So it’s just ok to pick fun at people just because they don’t have a disability now?

That’s where we are?!

FFS - it’s 2019, didn’t expect so many people to be so vile

MM is vile and seems to have encouraged people with half a brain that this is ok behaviour

If it happened in a work or school environment it would be classed as bullying.

This is no different

Just because you find it funny doesn’t make it ok

questions10000 · 08/12/2019 09:52

My ds is a bit more than - 8 in both eyes and my Aunt was - 10 (she had plastic lenses implanted in her eyes in her late sixties and is now not myopic at all). Neither of them is or was disabled.

countdowntochristmas · 08/12/2019 09:53

No one was nasty on Michael McIntyre!!
On here maybe but only cause people are being bloody ridiculous with disability comment which is insulting to people with actual disability's .

Iamnotagoddess · 08/12/2019 09:55

He was also wearing his own glasses.....

WatchingTheMoon · 08/12/2019 10:01

"So it’s just ok to pick fun at people just because they don’t have a disability now?"

Er, yeah, it is ok to 'pick fun' at people if it's done as an obvious joke and everyone is ok with it.

Must be a right laugh round your house.

Samcro · 08/12/2019 10:06

i wasn't keen on the "joke" but it made sense when Ben came on.
the people involved were not disabled. so I really don't see that part of the OP.
comparing needing glasses to being in a wheelchair is crass.
(watched the show and have a dc who is a LIFE long wheelchair user)

JustDanceAddict · 08/12/2019 10:12

I didn’t see it but I also wear glasses - and have some loss of hearing. Def not disables. They obv weren’t talking about those who are registered blind.

You are not disabled if you wear glasses that can correct your vision.

greenlynx · 08/12/2019 10:18

I think OP has a point. It’s not about is it disability or not, it’s about jokes and mocking people. I haven’t seen the programme yesterday, seen a couple before and not a big fan. I and DH are shortsighted, not disability but it’s pretty uncomfortable and we would rather not to have this problem. None of us would like people making jokes of it, we would feel pretty hurt. DD is visually impaired. Any jokes/banter/ etc would be devastating for her and would affect her confidence as well. Her vision is corrected by glasses just a little and actually not even mine is corrected 100%.
Yes, we do have funny situations in real life because of our bad eyesight and even laugh afterwards and tell family and friends about it but we choose what to tell and whom to tell so we are in control, it’s a main thing.

FloydWasACat · 08/12/2019 10:50

I am -2.75 both eyes and didn't find it offensive. I didn't like the way all the glasses wearers were put together as it was a bit odd, don't think I would have felt particularly comfortable if I was one of them. But, I did play along. Yeah, I was useless.
I don't see my rubbish eyesight as a disability, I just have and always have had rubbish eyesight.

FloydWasACat · 08/12/2019 10:58

I know -2.75 might not be that bad compared to some of the people on here but I cannot function without wearing my glasses (dyspraxia doesn't help).

ginghamstarfish · 08/12/2019 11:00

I am disabled. I also wear glasses, but don't consider this a disability ... what nonsense.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/12/2019 11:02

"You are not disabled if you wear glasses that can correct your vision."

Actually, at a certain point the state DOES consider people to be disabled. See my post above about my friend.

Fucck · 08/12/2019 11:07

You are very unreasonable to compare needing glasses to enable you to see clearly, and being in a wheelchair still unable to walk.

I wear glasses but I have never once thought myself disabled

I've got absolutely atrocious eyesight, I can't see distance and feel very disoriented when I'm not wearing my glasses. I didn't watch MM last night. But I'm Shock at you classing me as disabled!

MorrisZapp · 08/12/2019 11:07

Glasses are funny, it's a fact. In Scotland we call them Gregs (Gregory Pecks). I'm very short sighted and when DS was a toddler he knew he could effectively disable me by grabbing my gregs and flinging them on the ground.

Not funny at the time but hilarious to look back on. When people lose their sight it's utterly heartbreaking, but for the millions of us who just need to get to specsavers, shortsightedness is no more of an issue than taking care of our teeth.

I never want to live in a world where finding interest or humour in my bodily, human flaws is fucking 'problematic'.

WatchingTheMoon · 08/12/2019 11:20

"it’s about jokes and mocking people."

So what is it safe to make jokes about? Because on some level, most jokes are about mocking people.

SinkGirl · 08/12/2019 12:34

Actually, at a certain point the state DOES consider people to be disabled. See my post above about my friend

If your visual acuity is beyond the threshold for visual impairment with your glasses on, you are not considered visually impaired.

If it’s below that threshold, you are considered visually impaired.

If your acuity is above the threshold but you have certain visual field defects, you are considered visually impaired.

Generally, if glasses correct your vision to within an acceptable range then it’s not a disability. Not all glasses wearers have anywhere near normal acuity while wearing glasses.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 08/12/2019 13:08

I need singing lessons because i cant sing..does that make me disabled. Whatever the view on the show, that has to be the most stupid and ignorant comment I've ever read on mumsnet. And there's a lot of contenders!
