For wanting a light hearted soap on telly?

As it says on the tin really. I don't want anything mushy or sappy or brainless, but I miss watching soaps and just enjoying a good storyline. Most soaps seem to be trying to outdo eachother with misery porn storylines and it's just not relaxing or fun to watch- in fact they stress me out!

Am I being silly?

Me too, I stopped watching coronation street and eastenders when my 21 year old was born, the last storyline I saw was when Martin kemp was killed off.

Doc Martin is getting old now, almost entering last of the summer wine territory.

Whereland · 08/12/2019 15:11

How has no one mentioned home and away?! I've been watching it for about 25 years 😳😂

billybagpuss · 08/12/2019 16:00

I miss charmed, dd says mum you must try such and such it’s like charmed, no it’s not it’s dark and has none of the lighter moments

EdithWeston · 08/12/2019 16:04

Try Classic Corrie on ITV3 (you may need to record it as it's on weekday afternoons repeated early next weekday)

A reminder of what soaps used to be!

There's also classic Emmerdale (though I think a lot of the quality went out of that when they dropped the 'Farm') and Eastenders (but that always was rather more miserable grittier

JustDanceAddict · 08/12/2019 16:14

Loved Sunset Beach. Everyone fancied the priest!!
I vote for Doctors. It’s the only soap I watch now (apart from Casualty but that’s once a week and with DH). I watch when I get in from work as my chill out time. It sometimes has harder hitting stories but generally it’s lighthearted and a bit wtf!

JustDanceAddict · 08/12/2019 16:17

Another one, on Netflix though, is Jane the Virgin. It’s finished now but we’ll worth watching!

LoseLooseLucy · 08/12/2019 16:20

Oh Lord, Sunset Beach was fantastic! Remember when Vanessa got that bubble wrap disease, the earthquake... I'd definitely watch it again 😂

ducktablelampcarrot · 08/12/2019 16:23

I do enjoy and episode of New Girl on amazon!

TheDuckSaysMoo · 08/12/2019 19:03

Jane the virgin would be perfect for sunset beach lovers. It's a sophisticated take on cheesy soap opera - complete with good/evil twins.

BloodyCats · 08/12/2019 19:06

Anyone watched schitts creek? It’s not a soap but it’s a lovely watch. Moira Rose is so funny.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 08/12/2019 19:11

I've ditched Corrie (so depressing!) and gotten into The Crown instead. It's basically a soap opera but with much better acting and loosely based on real events.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 08/12/2019 19:12

Another vote for Doctors (especially now Becky has sodded off to pastures new!). I hardly ever get to watch it "live" but it's my guilty pleasure to binge it on iPlayer when I have time.

SavageBeauty73 · 08/12/2019 19:13

@cheesemumma where are you watching Fat Friends online? I used to love it and would love to rewatch

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 08/12/2019 19:21

I always watched Heartbeat with my mother, I liked that. I much prefer crime shows or sitcoms like Miranda.

cheesemumma · 08/12/2019 19:32

@savageBeauty83 just googled and clicked on the link. Sorry cant be more specific. Next time I watch I'll try to link.

Binglebong · 08/12/2019 19:38

Another saying Doctors. There are some longer storylines but most of the dubiously-connected-to-main-characters stories are over in an ep. There is a good mix of funny and serious and always an excellent thread on here being rude about it all. Everyone welcome!

We hate Daniel.

ColleysMill · 08/12/2019 19:39

I love love love Father Brown. Gentle, witty and just easy watching. Its my go to if nothing else takes my fancy.

ColleysMill · 08/12/2019 19:41

I did also watch Doctors religiously when on mat leave. Although the story line with niamh kidnapping a patient with their dad waa ridiculous

Binglebong · 08/12/2019 19:44

I missed that storyline Colleys - please share!

Squirrel134 · 09/12/2019 01:08

Oops
Out of the country is in theme song
Programme is called Bad Move!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 09/12/2019 01:52

Another one for Doctors here, even my husband likes it, he’s fed up with depressing soaps. I hate Daniel too.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 09/12/2019 01:54

Another brilliant daytime show which the BBC stopped was ‘The Coroner’ I was really gutted.

Binglebong · 09/12/2019 14:40

Today's Doctors was a girl who is convinced she is half lynx, Bear (yes really!) getting a dyslexia diagnosis and Gobby trying to get someone to take her speeding points. How can you not want to watch!?

SavageBeauty73 · 09/12/2019 19:14

I'm watching Virgin River on Netflix. Cheesy, gentle small town drama. I'm loving it!

Fi1982 · 09/12/2019 19:23

@Whereland

You need to get your arse over to our H&A mega thread on the TV forum 😆 we never miss an episode! (Although it’s been a bit touch n go with the dire dullness of the interminable Robbo storyline 😴)
