Dickish driving behaviour

Is it just me or has the standard of driving on the roads in the UK got worse and worse? Have just done around a 4 mile round trip and encountered the following:-

Huge lorry parked on double yellows and blocking the road, causing a big queue of traffic

Someone doing an illegal u-turn and almost causing an accident

Car pulling out on me on a roundabout causing me to slam brakes on

Car in Tesco car park almost reversing into me until I sounded horn and then they stopped

I realise my driving probably isn't perfect but it feels like people don't give a shit on the roads any more and it's just breeding more bad driving behaviour because people think why should I drive carefully if no one else cares?! Maybe I'm just a bit grumpy today but bloody hell I feel like I have to be on high alert every time I get in the car!

I keep remembering stuff as I’m reading the thread, apologies! Might be a bit revealing but I live in a town where 2 people have been killed on impact by speeding drivers in the past week alone. They were with partners who are in critical conditions. One died at each incident. One driver was a taxi and was driving in a 20mph school zone at leaving time. How fast he must have been going to kill the poor woman on impact is beyond me. My heart breaks for the families and hopefully the drivers get lengthy prison sentences

@irishglaze I am sure that it will be a great consolation to you when you are in a hospital bed (or possibly your grave) that at least you taught a pesky driver what can happen it they run a red light!
As a pedestrian, you are responsible for checking that the road is clear before you cross. The road, in your example, is not clear; you are just hoping for the best, which makes you no better than the errant driver . What on earth do you hope to achieve? Be careful.

Really? I would never purposefully let someone past me if they were speeding, and hopefully by not doing that I save some poor person they could have knocked over.

You are not the traffic police, and your mindset is what causes road rage. Pull over, let the person past and pull back out when safe to do so. If you're too focused on the person speeding behind you then you can't focus on the road properly.

It's amazing how some drivers think they own the road. Why the hell do you think you should have the right to break the law? You would have a point if they were driving below the speed limit, that annoys me, too.

Just slow down until you can safely overtake. Tailgating is so dangerous, as if something went wrong you wouldn't have time to avoid an accident. And you would be the one who will be judged to be in the wrong.

DracarysThis

If you are driving on a single carriageway road and are observing the speed limit, there is absolutely no reason you should pull over to let a speeding motorist past - unless of course they are emergency services.

woodhill · 08/12/2019 14:27

Yes be careful Irish but there are so many people blatantly jumping the red light. Very dangerous for people waiting in their car to turn right on the opposite side

frumpety · 08/12/2019 21:22

You have to slow down when it turns to amber don’t you?

In theory yes , but i will continue to tell my children not to start crossing until the car stops, because the number of people in my town who shouldn't really be driving is huge. If they can't see you, it makes no difference if you are right, if you are dead !

frumpety · 08/12/2019 21:36

And that statement is why tailgating is illegal, because it causes a distraction. That's why I leave a big gap in front so people can overtake and pull in safely should the opportunity present itself. But you cannot blame road rage on anyone else but yourself, if you are an adult, you are responsible for your own emotions. If you wish to travel faster than the car in front and the one in front of that, and the one in front of that etc , simply wait for a safe moment to pass. If travelling in a line of traffic all behind a slow moving vehicle, like I was, sitting on the bumper of the vehicle in front will not speed up that line of traffic and doing so makes you a crap driver.

Vulpine · 08/12/2019 22:07

Yes there are alot of incredibly impatient drivers on the road

Lucked · 08/12/2019 22:15

What gives me the rage is that people think they can be completely obstructive by double parking, blocking someone etc if they have their hazards on. Eh no you don’t negate the law by putting on flashing lights!

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/12/2019 01:22

I couldn’t care less if one of them hit me as they would have been driving illegally.

I think that will be little comfort to you when you’re lying in intensive care.

This is outing for me, too, but two girls were run over on a pelican crossing near me 3 years ago, they had the green man, the driver was drunk and he only got 6 years (so will be out in 3, probably quite soon). Since that incident I am extra careful about making sure drivers have seen red lights at pedestrian crossings.

joystir59 · 23/06/2020 03:32

It's not illegal to go through an amber light. If it turns amber just as you are about go through you should continue

Why have you woken up a 6 month zombie thread?
