but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

Where can I get those fairy lights from DeadbutDelicious ? I can't stand the LED harsh blue, red, yellow and green colours, they're just not as twinkly nor Christmassy.

I need the old fashioned filament lights to put on my silver fake tree, but fear it's too late to get them from ebay or Amazon now

tillytrotter1 · 06/12/2019 23:18

DeadButDelicious

Your picture of the lights look positively space age compared to a couple of sets we have upstairs. Each bell has a nursery rhyme printed on them, the wire is strands of twisted, cotton covered cable! They were from the forties I think, I vaguely recall them and I'm a boomer, and my parents had had them for a while.

maloofhoof · 06/12/2019 23:20

I miss these!

Not technically a decoration but you've made me nostalgic

Cryalot2 · 06/12/2019 23:23

They remind me of our few happy times at home .
Brought a tear to my eye. Mum now has dementia. Such a cruel illness.

Outsomnia · 06/12/2019 23:23

Remembering my home place with these. It is nostalgic to say the least of it.

Hankies at Dawn lol.

QueenofPain · 06/12/2019 23:28

I would like some ceiling dangling things but my ceilings are all too high, and the cost of a tower scaffold might take the shine off of Xmas a bit.

QueenofPain · 06/12/2019 23:31

Ooohh, that’s incredibly authentic with the artex as well 70s witch.

Lillygolightly · 07/12/2019 00:16

@el1zabeth They aren't mine sadly but if you put vintage fairy lights into eBay loads pop up worth a look!

I've gone down a vintage Xmas decoration rabbit hole on eBay... I'm so close to clicking check out... Grin

TooManyPaws · 07/12/2019 00:40

I was actually glad when my parents got a pre-lit tree as it saved an entire afternoon of my father swearing and stamping around the house as we kept out of his way, as he tried to untangle the lights, get them all working and then get them on the tree to his satisfaction! 😂

BitOfFun · 07/12/2019 01:03

I've got just one of these cute angels left from a set of half a dozen from my 1970s childhood. I love it, and the memories it brings back.

I used to work on a market stall selling salad until November and then we'd have Christmas decorations, wrap and trees. I worked there between 80-84 and by the time Christmas Eve came I was boggle eyed lol. We'd sell tree lights and test them in front of customers I think the biggest set was 80 lights. The lights never came with plugs ( the norm then) and we'd get the two wires and put them inside a light bulb fitting to light them up ShockShockShockyou've probably guessed no health and safety rules back in the day! Spray snow was put on windows and was a pain to remove too. Asa child I remember paper garlands, elves made out of pipe cleaners on the tree and my late mum had a beautiful plastic musical, light up church. I was thrilled to find a modern Xmas church in ikea that was musical too.Grin we used to have 3 coloured balloons in each corner of the room and thought it was really naughty to put a long ballon in the middle of two round ones...the adults never seemed to notice WinkHmm

The cardboard sleigh!!! Ours used to go up the stairs above the banister. I'm 41.

My dad used to stick balloons up in the corners or the room along with all the ceiling decs and there was so much lameta and crap that you couldn't even see the actual tree.

My favourite decs were like tinsel fireworks. They looked like a little umbrella but when you turned them upside down to hang on the tree they fanned out. I still have one surviving dec left but it looks a bit sad now.

Chimchar · 07/12/2019 01:26

Thank you so much @evilharpy for the memory of the sleigh. I had one as a child and I'd forgotten all about it. I bet it's still in my Dads loft with all of the other 70s fabulousness. Grin

I loved those selection stockings too with the paper netting stuff.

Loving this thread. ❤️

ThanksForAllTheFish · 07/12/2019 02:31

In our house these decorations are called ‘Corner to Middles’ because that’s the way you hang them on the ceiling.

Did anyone else have those gold and red fringy wall banners that said merry Christmas and a happy new year on them. Will link a photo of I can find any.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 07/12/2019 04:36

We’ve got lametta on our tree this year and it looks absolutely amazing, like a silvery, shimmery waterfall.

I miss the old style fairy lights too - you can buy them still if you google pickwick fairy you only get 40 in a set and we’ve got a 7ff tree so no good.

iheartchristmas92 · 07/12/2019 08:09

@ThanksForAllTheFish omg yes my mum had those too!! 😂😂

Christmas wouldn't be quite right without this old girl. Loving the nostalgia.

I remember wrapping paper used to look like this. Sheets in a plastic packet rather than on a roll. I remember all these exact papers Grin

@longleggedgal

I've only just started the thread so someone might have already replied but these are in either Tesco or Asda (I was in both on Thursday but can't remember where I saw them) and they're only £1!!!

I loved seeing them, made me feel very nostalgic. My mum's also still had ancient sticky tape on them, I think they were binned when she moved house unfortunately.

longleggedgal · 07/12/2019 08:36

Not in plastic. I meant you bought them individual and they was rolled up with an elastic band
Holding them in place.

emilybrontescorsett · 07/12/2019 08:40

This thread is great.
salsmum I remember the spray on fake snow. My mum would spray on the window too. Lord knows what it was made from but I too remember everyone having to take turns trying to remove it after Christmas as I wouldn't wipe off.
As already mentioned the palavour with the coloured fairy lights, having to make sure each one was screwed in and that all the glassy covers were in right otherwise they would not work.
I love good quality tinsel and bought some in the sale last year from an expensive garden centre to match my new decorations.
My favourite baubles were the ones my grandmas sister had. They were long ones not round. I managed to find some recently and have put them one by tree.
