House with swimpool. Is it pointless?

Hi lovelies!
My husband and I are considering buying a house with an indoor swimpool. We don't know anything about swimpools and are not sure if it's a good investment...

The property is in the UK and the swimpool is indoors (extension added to the house) and it also has a conservatory added to it. It's large space and the swimpool is rather generous when it comes to the sheer size of it.

Please, could you share your experience? We actually want to use the swimpool and are not considering the house because of it. We do actually like the property.

If I had half a million to spend I'd be looking less at the swimming pool and more at a nicer location.

@SweetSally

For the rasists - I am not British.

TheClaws · 06/12/2019 00:32

Nope. I have a pool, but the maintenance is horrendous - the pumps always seem to need replacing, and they’re not cheap, it always needs cleaning, it needs chemicals, it isn’t the correct temperature - and that’s before we start thinking about the safety side. My children aren’t toddlers any more, but I did have a scare with one of them when he was small when he jumped when I wasn’t looking. Plus, my neighbour drowned in her pool. Just think carefully about the setup before you buy.

MarleneandBoycie · 06/12/2019 00:54

I don’t really like indoor swimming pools, they always seem dreary. But you do live in the UK, so not much point in an outdoor one. I go in our pool approximately once a week, so barely worth it really (hotter country)

Prevegen4U · 06/12/2019 01:29

We saying SWIMMING POOL here in the states. Quit picking on us.

Tvstar · 06/12/2019 02:16

I gave heard it is one of the best ways to reduce the value of a property

I wouldn't buy it if you have primary school age children having looked at the local school information.

Derbee · 06/12/2019 02:39

From the picture, I was going to say it’s clearly an expensive house, and you are rich. So if you’ll use it, go for it as you won’t need to worry about the money particularly.

However, having seen that it’s a pretty average house, at a pretty normal price, I think the pool is way out of proportion to the property. Presumably you’re comfortable, but not rich. So I’d say the running and heating costs will be a source of stress.

WatchingTheMoon · 06/12/2019 02:56

sue ballING pool

kierenthecommunity · 06/12/2019 03:09

I would love a swimming pool and that one is gorgeous. Admittedly not fussed fir the rest of the house though. That kitchen is bonkers.

I assumed a swim pool was something different to a swimming pool admittedly. I was picturing one of those infinity pools or something

Derbee · 06/12/2019 03:10

I feel like a swim pool are those small ones with a strong current where you swim on the spot?

steff13 · 06/12/2019 03:21

This ☝️

heartsonacake · 06/12/2019 03:28

Oh my god, stop saying “swim pool”. Why are you saying that?! Confused

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 06/12/2019 03:44

I thought you meant a swim spa. Which is a large spa with a current that you can swim against. But you mean a pool.

BitOfFun · 06/12/2019 03:53

Yes, I think that the preoccupation with asking the OP to clarify what she means by a 'swim pool' is because it's an unusual turn of phrase, so it's unclear if she means an ordinary swimming pool or some kind of spa innovation.

I love the idea of an indoor pool, but if I'm honest, I think the novelty would wear off quite quickly.

Frenchw1fe · 06/12/2019 03:58

If you decide to buy then i recommend you look at this fb site.

We have a pool and I am very careful when dgc stays.

Derbee · 06/12/2019 04:00

PPs have posted links to the house. Definitely a proper swimming pool

BitOfFun · 06/12/2019 04:01

Looking at the rest of the house, I'm not wild about the décor, but that's easily changed. It would be an expensive job to get rid of that dated brick fireplace though.

It's a great location, and a good price. Only you know if you can cover the ongoing costs of pool maintenance though.

kateandme · 06/12/2019 04:18

SeditionSue then a slide from the bedrooms into it...

HoppingPavlova · 06/12/2019 04:23

Another Australian with a pool. Not hard to maintain as such but a time consuming faff you don’t need if you have young children. We outsource upkeep, not cheap.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 06/12/2019 04:41

Oh my, that pool is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to have one if I could afford it but my children are teenagers now so wouldn't have the safety aspect to worry about. Also, it's got to be pretty environmentally unfriendly to heat and maintain a non-essential like that.

I think Summerbreeze's post yesterday makes for interesting reading.

MinervaSaidThat · 06/12/2019 07:11

"For the rasists'

I think OP is having a laugh, her spelling is perfect otherwise yet she can't spell racists.

SweetSally · 06/12/2019 07:14

Hi all.

As few of you have said, looking at the floor plan the house looks rather disproportionate to beging with. The kitchen is small and I'd like to rip it out and merge with kitchen and dinning room into one big area.

The garden is a good size. Bedrooms are ok, too. There is no ensuite which bugs me a tiny little bit. The living room is decent size so we have no issues there either.

I agree with the posters that have said that if we were to sell the house (if we ever bought it) it will be difficult because the pool will put people off.

You could merge the kitchen/utility/changing rooms into one. You don’t need changing rooms, unless you’re planning on renting the pool out. Friends/family can get changed in the loo or bedrooms.
