House with swimpool. Is it pointless?

Hi lovelies!
My husband and I are considering buying a house with an indoor swimpool. We don't know anything about swimpools and are not sure if it's a good investment...

The property is in the UK and the swimpool is indoors (extension added to the house) and it also has a conservatory added to it. It's large space and the swimpool is rather generous when it comes to the sheer size of it.

Please, could you share your experience? We actually want to use the swimpool and are not considering the house because of it. We do actually like the property.

I have a colleague who bought a house with a pool, not because he wanted a pool, but because it was cheap (the builders had gone bust). He used the pool happily, but says that he hadn’t factored in the cost of feeding all his son’s friend and every other random teenager in East Yorkshire all summer!

oohnicevase · 05/12/2019 20:50

They cost a lot of heat , we had one as a child and it was expensive !

Atalune · 05/12/2019 20:52

Maintenance costs are quite high.

Indoor pools don’t appeal. Out door and heated? Yes please!

dontalltalkatonce · 05/12/2019 20:52

What I am looking for is disaster stories of real life experience and hearing the negatives: what if/what could happen/ what has happened to people who have/had an indoor swim pool.

Why? It's pretty easy to determine what the disasters could be and the negatives have been pointed out, cost and re-sale.

My sister has an indoor swimming pool. It's awesome. But it costs money to maintain, of course.

TatianaLarina · 05/12/2019 20:53

With small kids I would get a rigid, automatic pool cover operated by remote control. They’re not cheap but it’s worth it for peace of mind imo. Children can’t fall through them so they’re protected if they somehow get into the pool room.

I’d be surprised if you end up doing the chemicals yourself, most people pay a pool maintenance company.

Honeyroar · 05/12/2019 20:53

I’d love a swimming pool personally.

Lulualla · 05/12/2019 20:54

It's a swimming pool! Swim pool just isn't a thing.

IaIa3 · 05/12/2019 20:54

I know several people with an indoor pool, also with sauna so set up more like a spa and have no horror stories. Having said that they've always kept on top of cleaning and maintenance as opposed to leaving it until it needs a big job. If I was you I'd pay close attention to how maintained it looked and the condition of the room overall. The only pools that put me off are outdoor pools in the UK.

SweetSally · 05/12/2019 20:54

@Illeana

It's an extension of the house. Not a separate building.

House with swimpool. Is it pointless?

What's a swim pool?? 🤔

Mickhasnotorso · 05/12/2019 20:55

WHY ARE YOU CALLING IT A SWIM POOL?!?!?!?!!!!!!??

Atalune · 05/12/2019 20:56

It’s gorgeous.

If you can afford to run it, go for it!

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 05/12/2019 20:57

Can you clarity what you mean by swim pool op. Do you mean a large hot tub thing with a mechanical water flow to swim in. Or a small pool one lane designed for swimming? How big is it?

SantiagoSky · 05/12/2019 20:57

I would not buy a house with a swimming pool. The maintenance costs and environmental impact would be the deciding factors.

Sweetdreamer93 · 05/12/2019 20:57

I have both indoor and outdoor pools. Chlorine and Bromine.
It is a myth to assume they are a lot of work and expensive to run.
Much of the above will depend on your pool heating and filter system. You will also need to make sure the room set up equipment is good too as dehumidifying and controlled heat of the room is important.

carrots555 · 05/12/2019 20:57

Probably American.

They can't be bothered to say the 'ing' in waiting list and say wait list.

So swimming pool becomes swim pool.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 05/12/2019 20:57

Ah ignore post didn’t see your update

peachgreen · 05/12/2019 20:58

If I was loaded, I'd get one. I assume you're loaded, so go for it!

Saltdoughmuncher · 05/12/2019 20:58

You can hire it out to a local swimming school for lessons to make some money from it!

managedmis · 05/12/2019 20:58

You're kidding, right?

Laiste · 05/12/2019 20:59

It's lovely. Can't the current owners or the agents give you a break down of costs ect?

it's swimming. swimming pool

dontalltalkatonce · 05/12/2019 21:00

Probably American.

They can't be bothered to say the 'ing' in waiting list and say wait list.

Oh, BULLSHIT! Would you say that about any other nationality? Change out 'American' and sub in with say 'Pakistani' or 'African' and see how it sounds.

And they say 'swimming pool' FFS.

MiaKolpar · 05/12/2019 21:01

Was about to have fit of the vapours about the word "swimpool", but have now assumed you are American, and have calmed down.

As PP have said, if you want a swimming pool, and will use a swimming pool, buy a house with one. If you don't, then don't.

TatianaLarina · 05/12/2019 21:01

We had chlorine but changed it to salt water, much nicer. (Still has chlorine in but lower levels).

RaguForYou · 05/12/2019 21:02

WHY ARE YOU CALLING IT A SWIM POOL?!?!?!?!!!!!!??

Ditto to this.

Who says swim pool? I've never heard that any where. SwimMING pool.

Why are you calling it swim pool OP? where does this phrase come from?
