Was DH BU to have a go at the Labour Party canvasser on the doorstep?

Labour Party canvasser knocked and asked whether DH would be voting for our local MP. DH replied that he would, and always had. Canvasser replied "and your Missus?"

DH called him a "brocialist" and said that's exactly the sort of comment that's turning people off Labour at the moment.

I think DH was perfectly reasonable. Other family members who were here think it was petty and harsh, and the guy was just being friendly.

AWIBU?

Jeez, I've canvassed and the way I've always approached that is to say, 'And I was also hoping to speak to X at this address?' or similar.

People with same surnames could be siblings/parents anyway, don't assume!

TheWernethWife · 05/12/2019 17:48

I'm not offended by the word "missus' - northern labour voting woman here. How's the missus? is regularly used where I live. Think people are looking to be offended.

CharlottesPleb · 05/12/2019 17:55

Imagine, if you will, a creature so brightly glowing with left wing virtue that Labour grassroots are afraid to darken their door, lest they be snarked at for such vicious bigoted words as "mrs" or "hello". Grin

Hagbeth · 05/12/2019 17:58

I don’t understand why this is offensive? It’s the same as saying “your husband” or “your wife”. IMO YABU

TheWernethWife · 05/12/2019 18:01

What was the poor bugger supposed to say, "your lady wife" or "the memsahib" - would that suit any better.

SlothMama · 05/12/2019 18:03

I don't understand how it's sexist, wasn't he just asking how you planned on voting?

However I did go off on my MP after I saw her voting history... backward biggot that woman is.

Isithometimeyet0987 · 05/12/2019 18:05

Seriously?! Some people are so easily offended. Not everything is someone being sexist you know.

MsMellivora · 05/12/2019 18:07

The only person that has the right to tell anyone who they are voting for is the person themselves. I would be annoyed they asked in the first instance and would say they would have to ask my husband.

When it comes to sexism within party politics the absolute worse were left leaning men. As an example, another steward told me that the workers at the local factory I had gone to to get signatures for the Liverpool dock workers strike petition had only signed because I was pretty.

I think you dh was a tad OTT, he could have said something a little less confrontational but still get the point across such as 'do you mean you would like to talk to my wife?'

catwithnohat · 05/12/2019 18:16

If that's all your husband to be offended about he's doing quite well.

leghairdontcare · 05/12/2019 18:23

I'm sure he's been called worse.

BackforGood · 05/12/2019 18:34

Is anyone going to tell the rest of us what a brocialist is please ?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 05/12/2019 18:40

I don't understand your husband's need to be dickish. Missus is just a general term for partner/ girlfriend/ wife. My partner's friends will ask him "how's the missus", because they don't remember my name but it's polite to ask.

Even more dickish is the use of the term "brocialist"!

Hagbeth · 05/12/2019 18:40

en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/brocialist

ForalltheSaints · 05/12/2019 18:42

I am reminded of the former Speaker John Bercow's response to a sticker on his wife's car, where he reminded some Conservative members of the House of Commons that his wife was not his chattels.

Your DH was mild in his response. Perhaps tweet the said MP to ask for his response to this sexism.

Hagbeth · 05/12/2019 18:43

Tbh people who used the word “Brocalist” are probably not true working class anyway. Grin

Ghoulestofmums · 05/12/2019 18:44

What’s a canvasser? (Light hearted - obviously I know!) We never get them.

YouJustDoYou · 05/12/2019 18:48

Oh god, that poor man.

onanothertrain · 05/12/2019 18:49

Your DH sounds like an arsehole, not sure I'd be proud of that

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 05/12/2019 18:50

It is VERY rare i applaud a husband on here but your DH is wonderful OP.

ForMySorrow · 05/12/2019 18:57

From round here (north) missus is common and accepted. Hows the missus is akin to hows the hubby. Never seen the harm in it really.

Goldenbear · 05/12/2019 18:58

Which part of the country are you in? I really can't imagine a canvasser using that term around here. It sounds overfamiliar.

Vulpine · 05/12/2019 19:00

Doesnt offend me as a mrs

LannisterLion1 · 05/12/2019 19:03

I'd have told him to bugger off. No cold callers of any kind welcome here.
