And everyone else says Santa?

I say Santa but my posh DH and all his family and posh friends say Father Christmas.

Anyone else noticed this? Or AIBU?

*I thought Santa Claus was more American and became established in the UK in 1980s.

Am I wrong?*

Yes.

lowlandLucky · 05/12/2019 15:50

Pinkandgreenfloral i am with you on the Santa stop here signs, they especially wind me up if they dont say " please"

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 15:51

Ffs it may not be a new thing in Scotland or Ireland but it is in England and therefore it feels sad to hear the kids calling Father Christmas ‘Santa’ which is blatantly influenced by American culture.

I've lived in England all my life and it's not a new thing where I'm from. Not influenced by American culture at all, you're generalising. And wrong.

haverhill · 05/12/2019 15:53

No one said Santa round our way in the 70s.
All the people saying you’ve always said Santa- how far back are you meaning?

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 15:55

Another Scot here chiming in to say Santa is Scottish and Father Christmas is English (and not just Southern English, Northern as well).

Nope. Read my previous posts Smile

MindyStClaire · 05/12/2019 15:55

Well my grandfather said Santy and he'd be in his 90s now if he were still alive.

derxa · 05/12/2019 15:55

All the people saying you’ve always said Santa- how far back are you meaning? Over 50 years.

FloraGreysteel · 05/12/2019 15:56

I say Father Christmas and I'm not posh. I was brought up to think Santa was a crass Americanism like Xmas. Maybe my mum us posh pretentions!

Fluffiest · 05/12/2019 15:58

I was brought up with Father Christmas but have been corrupted and now say Santa even though I think Father Christmas is much nicer.

Thecaravan · 05/12/2019 15:59

North west England here. Always remember using both interchangeably. DH uses SC as Irish. Kids say SC as do I most of the time now. Not sure why it's such an issue really. People get very precious over 'their' words.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 05/12/2019 15:59

"All the people saying you’ve always said Santa- how far back are you meaning?"

Well I'm 34 and I've always said/heard "Santa", my mother is 64 and she always said "Santa", my grandmother is 86 and she always said "Santa"... far enough back for you?

Celebelly · 05/12/2019 15:59

My 89yo Gran calls him Santa and that's what her parents called him when she was little (Scotland). I just WhatsApped her to ask Grin

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 15:59

I say Father Christmas because I'm not American.

FFS, neither are lots of people who grew up, like me, calling him Santa/Santy and I'm in my 50s Hmm

PlasticPatty · 05/12/2019 16:00

Absolutely. Posh people like me.
I'm so not posh - northern, working class...
Always said Father Christmas. Never heard Santa Claus until I saw American films.

PortNStilton · 05/12/2019 16:00

Grew up in a working class family. Mum (english) said FC and dad said ‘Santy’. We used FC as kids. Santa Claus was definitely seen as American (80s childhood).

PortNStilton · 05/12/2019 16:00

Irish Dad

ebenezerscroogedmeover · 05/12/2019 16:00

I say Father Christmas. Certainly not posh!

FeckArseMerlot · 05/12/2019 16:00

LOL. OP YADBU.

FloraGreysteel · 05/12/2019 16:01

I was born in 1967 if that helps contextualise it

WombleishMerryChristmasOfThigh · 05/12/2019 16:01

Is it just me, or do lots of posters who insist that 'Santa' is American and they always called him 'Father Christmas' sound smug as fuck?

Tubbyinthehottub · 05/12/2019 16:02

I'm from the NE and it's Santa. I live in the NW now and most people say Father Christmas. I told my friend it sounded posh to me and she said she thought saying Santa sounded posh Xmas Confused

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 05/12/2019 16:03

"Is it just me, or do lots of posters who insist that 'Santa' is American and they always called him 'Father Christmas' sound smug as fuck?"

Not just you.

gothefcktosleep · 05/12/2019 16:03

YABU it’s Father Christmas no matter what class you belong to! ☺️

Celebelly · 05/12/2019 16:04

There are two types of people in the world.

  1. I call him X but it's interesting to learn other people call him Y. Regional variations are really cool!

  2. I call him X and anything else is AMERICAN PROPAGANDA YOU COMMIE BASTARDS

AhNowTed · 05/12/2019 16:04

Oh my god.

Irish people say Santy or Santa, and always have done.

Scottish people say Santa.

How many times do we have to say it!!!
