Mouse or rat? Found it in the garden, about the size of a hamster

It's a mouse.
Which type of Hamster are you using for scale. Syrian are much bigger than Russian.
I have extensive mouse experience due to one of my cats being a skilled mouser.

Ok. It's a 10cm big hairless tailed squirrel. That's brown, not the grey that's common in the UK.

I would say field mouse - they're bigger than a house mouse, with more bulgy eyes .

Not a rat with a hairy tail.

Not a squirrel - the feet are all wrong, and the face doesn't look right either.

It does look like a shrew, but at 10cm that is quite large for a shrew.

I have a pet degu.
His front paws are pink on the inside and they have yellow teeth at the front.

That is 100% not a rat. It looks like a shrew to me.

Looking at it on a bigger screen I can agree that it's definitely not a rat!

Mouse and rat tails are scaly, not furry.

It's face looks like a squirrel. A baby one maybe before the tail gets bushy?

We agreed to get a puppy and not have rats any more. First pic of said puppy and Dh said "Oh! So we are getting another rat then?"

This is a bank vole. Which is a possibility if not a yellow necked mouse.

Looks like a degu to me, probably an escaped (or unwanted and dumped) pet

Ears don't look rat like to be honest and I've seen tons at the yard. Hope that helps.
