AIBU to think Melania Trump is quite impressive, in a way?

It can't be easy being married to a man like Donald Trump, and it can't be easy being in the public eye so much, but Melania Trump seems to take it all in her stride.
She is always immaculate in her appearance, and always looks so poised and calm, that I can't help being a bit impressed by the way she handles her role.

I realise she's probably had work done, and maybe she's a slave to botox, but I think she is quite striking and beautiful. Just one thing though - I wish she'd stop wearing the stupidly high heels - all her shoes seems to have 6inch heels and sometimes she looks a bit unsteady, especially when negotiating steps.

I'm not keen on her husband, but AIBU to think MT is doing a good job of being First Lady?

a win is a win. That's their system

But it still doesn't negate the fact that millions more people voted for - endorsed - Hillary.

They got stuck with Trump.

Lweji · 07/12/2019 11:55

I think it was a damning indictment of HC as a person, that the US public preferred Trump.

Your initial quote @Aderyn19

It was pointed out that the "public" (voters, in fact) actually did prefer Hillary. You've been round in circles trying to demonstrate otherwise, clutching at 3 vs 2,9 straws. You also don't seem to understand the complexity of what happened in that election to put down Hillary based on it.
Ok, we get it. You don't like her. She'd have had to win 90% to 10% to be any worthy, unlike all those men who also fell against Trump. Like any woman, she has to be 10x better than any man. Like any woman, the silent discreet type is better than any other trying to rise above her station or, God forbid, have any opinions.

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 07/12/2019 11:57

It's a job. She is as somebody else said upthread doing a reasonable job of covering up how unhappy she is to be in this situation, she doesn't embarrass him, by being unattractive or fat. That's all he wants from her.

When this is over the contract is over.

PineappleDanish · 07/12/2019 17:27

Saw something on Twitter saying that Melania always looks in photos as if she's struggling to read the menu in the chippy.

They have a point.

He's no better....

And of course, the infamous lips as eyes photoshop....

George W also lost the popular vote, yes. Electoral college is a fucking farce, its giving votes to land instead of people and favours Republicans.

Patroclus · 08/12/2019 13:44

And loads of people have complained about it before Trump.

I wasnt concerned with that system Aderyn, Im simply referring to who got the most people to vote for them.

Defenbaker · 09/12/2019 00:45

@PineappleDanish "Saw something on Twitter saying that Melania always looks in photos as if she's struggling to read the menu in the chippy."

Ha ha ha Grin, it's true! Now you've said that I'll never be able to look at her again without thinking of that comment.

She does look a bit zoned out at times. PP said maybe she's drugged up to the eyeballs to cope with it all. If the marriage was all about the money for her, she's probably realised too late that there are some things that no amount of money can compensate for. It's really sad. The more I think about it, I don't envy her at all, but think she is doing well to hold herself together with dignity, when she might be feeling utterly miserable inside.

Well, 2.9 isn't quite 3 million. So her popular vote was less than you said. I think the numbers are relevant if you are making the case that she was a significantly more popular choice.

Oh for the love of fucking puppies.

She won by 2,868,686 votes. That is, two million, eight hundred and sixty eight thousand, six hundred and eighty six votes (in case your difficulty here is caused by problems reading numbers in numerical form).

There - better? She was a significantly more popular choice.

Many candidates won with majorities in the hundreds of thousands. JFK was one.

FixItUpChappie · 09/12/2019 01:48

I cannot disagree with you more that the woman is impressive in any way. YBVU. IMO.

As Orwell would say - she not a victim but an accomplice. Sailed her morals away for her luxurious lifestyle, the way the politicians around him have fobbed them off for power.

showmewhatyougot · 09/12/2019 02:11

Your easily impressed. A lot of women put up with a lot worse for the £££. It's not impressive it's vile.

I doubt very much that she hates her husband because she doesn't have to stay with him.

She always had plenty of her own money from a successful career so either she married for love or because being rich wasn't enough for her and only super mega stupid rich would do.

She has become extremely rich and powerful but I see nothing to admire in either her or her husband.

Aderyn19 · 09/12/2019 10:20

mathanxiety In a country the size of the USA, getting fewer than 3 million votes more than DT does not make her significantly more popular imo. Given who she was up against, I believe she ought to have been way ahead. Yes, she had more votes (I apologise for the heinous crime of getting that wrong), however I maintain that the result is indicative of her lack of popularity amongst voters.

You don't have to be so needlessly rude - this is just a conversation, with no bearing on what happens in real life. Try to keep some perspective and not get personally insulting.

Aderyn19 · 09/12/2019 10:23

I find Melania quite perplexing. It seems clear that she doesn't like him, so if she was charmed initially, it seems to have worn off. I think he embarrasses her and the perfect appearance is a way to trying to distance herself and not appear affected by him.I think the truth will come out in the future, when his presidency is over and she has joined the list of his ex wives.

ChristmasSpirtsOnTheRocksPleas · 09/12/2019 10:26

I’m impressed. It must take nerves of steel to have to be around Donald so much. If I were her I’d have to wear dark sunglasses 24/7 to avoid being caught in camera rolling my eyes.

I'd love to know what he's promised her to keep her on board. I bet she's the only first lady in history to hope he doesn't get a second term.

xChristmasJumperx · 09/12/2019 14:12

Marla was never DT's wife.

Obviously she can leave any time she decides to, so there must have been a deal thrashed out.

I agree that even while playing the part of first lady quite impeccably she is playing it as a role and not in any small way as wife. She has commenced the distancing already. She's doing a good job I think given that her options are to leave a narcissist who never seems to lose even though everybody thinks he's crazy, or stick it out a few more years.

derxa · 09/12/2019 15:08

Many candidates won with majorities in the hundreds of thousands. JFK was one. Another adulterer

Aderyn19 · 09/12/2019 15:29

I don't get all the JFK adoration tbh - maybe the public back then just knew less about the personalities of their leaders.
Iirc Jackie Kennedy got a lot of criticism for marrying Onassis. As if JFK was Mr Perfect and Onassis was a step down for her.

Patroclus · 09/12/2019 15:47

Yes, somebody explain the JFK worship to me, is it because he tragiclly died?
