To ask what you are getting your teen maths/computer science nerd for Christmas?

Hi,

I'm at a loss. I've asked him for ideas but he's not been forthcoming.

I've ordered a couple of books I think he will like but other than that I've drawn a blank.

He's already got the main gadgets (laptop/phone/watch/tablet) over previous birthdays/Christmas and none are in need of an upgrade/replacement (by way of example his phone/iPad mini are quite old but he's perfectly happy with them and doesn't want a new one).

He's not into music and clothes are "boring".

So has anyone come up with something cool for the 16/17 year old self proclaimed and proud of it nerd in their life?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Love this thread, my ds13 would want most things mentioned on here, he is getting a raspberry pie 4 for Christmas and I love the look of the Turing tumble

SweetMarmalade · 13/12/2019 22:07

You can currently still get the Turing tumble via

mathsgear.co.uk/products/turing-tumble

SweetMarmalade · 13/12/2019 22:09

And thanks to this thread I’ve heard all about it, otherwise I was clueless to it’s existence!Grin

Andysbestadventure · 13/12/2019 22:35

Get him a trip to Cern! 😂

SciFiRules · 13/12/2019 22:43

How about some software development courses? JAVA, Python, C etc.

CatsMother66 · 15/12/2019 21:30

@DeRigueurMortis have you had your Turing Tumble yet? I had some great ideas from this thread and ordered one the same time as you but haven’t heard anything yet.

DeRigueurMortis · 15/12/2019 21:32

No not yet!

I'll post back when I get it.

@DeRigueurMortis, I’ve checked their site and it says out of stock, delivery mid January. No problem if that’s the case as I’ll put it away for next year. I haven’t had any email confirmation of the order. Yes please, let me know if you get it.

DeRigueurMortis · 15/12/2019 22:16

@CatsMother66

When I ordered they said they expected to be restocked in the UK on the w/c 16th (ie tomorrow).

Here's the email I got:

Thank you for your purchase!
We are currently restocking our inventory in the UK and estimate shipment of orders the week of December 16th. We expect it to reach you by or before Christmas. We will notify you when your order has been sent.

I ordered this for my nerd - he’s 21 and doing cybersecurity at university. He’ll roll his eyes but will secretly love it - they look very cool

(It lights up in different colours round the edge)

RedSheep73 · 15/12/2019 22:27

Karting vouchers. That's his other obsession.

DeRigueurMortis · 17/12/2019 13:20

@CatsMother66

Just a quick update to let you know the Turing Tumble arrived today.

Cross fingers you'll get yours before Christmas.

Is a Raspberry pi worth getting? Currently debating whether to get one for DS(14). He has given no clues as to what he might like for Christmas and I have seen them mentioned on MN a few times

Sandaled · 18/12/2019 15:36

I think so, there are plenty of books on how to get started, or info online, they are great fun and there's so much you can do with them. You can get starter sets which are a bit more pricey, but so much easier when getting started.

Alexa with plugs and lightbulbs so he can control his whole room by say a command.
VR headset.
Computer accessories, my sisters gf go bought all she need to make her own computer a few years ago and love it, it was about £250 for everything though, so maybe out of budget.
Is he into gaming?
Gaming chair (my brother has one with built in speakers so it feels like the sounds are coming from all around you.
A PS4 docking station if he has a PS4, amazon have them with controller charging docking stations and game holders with fan underneath to keep the console cool of used a lot.
Origin voucher if he’s into gaming it means he can buy new games or add ons for the ones he already has.
Is he into any tv series of films most have lots of mechendise? Just search the name of series or film on amazon or google and see what comes up.
Snapchat glasses?
3D pen?
Build a robot?
Any accessories for his laptop he needs/wants?
Gaming mouse and keyboard?
