This is from one of the UK tabolids

It's a great song. Imo.

Thats art for you, it speaks to everyone differently.

RonniePickering · 04/12/2019 19:05

I didn't actually read any posts, I just presumed she'd called it problematic.

Staggeringly rude.

Alrighteo · 04/12/2019 19:21

Yes, I've pointed out that faggot wasn't a gay slur back in the 80's in Ireland.
But you'll have gobshites taking on the offence on behalf of gays when it wasn't actually referring remotely to anything like that.

Jillyhilly · 04/12/2019 19:21

It really isn’t “staggeringly rude”.

BalthazarImpresario · 04/12/2019 19:23

I have an unpopular opinion that it is a massively overhyped song because of the lyrics.

It's okay and definitely evokes thoughts of Christmas but as a song it ain't all that people bleat on about year after year after year.... Over it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/12/2019 19:28

Brilliant song, gets you into their story. Its the perfect anti Christmas Christmas song.

Melroses · 04/12/2019 19:34

You're an old slop on junk (I think)"
And
"You scumbag, you maggot
You're cheap and you're haggard"

And it's altogether a better version.

In the original, the swearing and name calling is so hyperbolic that, in the context of the narrative, it loses its profanity and becomes absurd and almost funny.

Toning it down means it never manages to transcend its purpose as and insult and it ends up actually being more offensive than the original. It just ruins it.

ViciousJackdaw · 04/12/2019 19:37

I read an interview with MacColl's son a few years ago and he said that he loves hearing his Mum's voice in random places over Christmas, it makes him feel like she's with him. So whilst most Christmas songs annoy, if not upset (DDad died at Christmas) me, this one makes me feel a bit warmer inside.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 04/12/2019 19:46

That’s lovely vicious

I can’t even remember what my mum sounded like

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 19:48

“ It really isn’t “staggeringly rude”.”

Not staggeringly rude, no. But pretty rude.

“Faggot” was first recorded as a derogatory term for a homosexual man in the U.K. at the beginning of the 20th century, I think.

ZenNudist · 04/12/2019 19:48

My fave Christmas song

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 19:52

What I don’t understand is why it’s a Christmas song.

theendoftheendoftheend · 04/12/2019 19:54

It's mine and DP's song

Jellykat · 04/12/2019 19:55

I bloody love that song!
Especially when i hear it in supermarkets Grin
My DB worked for Kirsty, she was a gorgeous lady by all accounts, and died in such awful heroic circumstances.. So i like to think she would've peed herself laughing, if she'd known that all these years later it wouldve been played, while those unaware of the lyrics are merrily picking their cheeses.

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 19:58

But it’s about addiction and broken dreams. It’s a fucking tragedy! No happy ending.

Merename · 04/12/2019 19:59

I’m sure it’s already been said, but the radio guy’s comment ‘chav bilge’ is far more offensive than the song imo.

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 20:03

And it is actually pretty disrespectful to the song that it’s become generic Christmas diddly music with nobody listening to the lyrics.

TriangularRatbag · 04/12/2019 20:04

What I don’t understand is why it’s a Christmas song

It was Christmas Eve in the drunk tank ...

The bells were ringing out for Christmas Day

I pray god it's our last

Christmas isn't all about elves and fucking Jesus!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 04/12/2019 20:05

nobody listening to the lyrics

There’s a thread full of people listening to the lyrics

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 04/12/2019 20:05

Oh plopsie bunny

Bold fail

PortNStilton · 04/12/2019 20:06

Santa Baby
I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus

Vom

Jillyhilly · 04/12/2019 20:07

It’s a song, not a person. Who cares if people disrespect it?

Clawdy · 04/12/2019 20:18

Love the video. That bit at the end where they are dancing together - so poignant.

Alrighteo · 04/12/2019 20:21

@theendoftheendoftheend This was me and my exes song as we were literally living it...

Before I give my thoughts I should mention that I met Kirsty MacColl a few months before she died, and went to her memorial service. Remembering her mother speaking at the memorial service I am reminded of every time I hear of someone losing their child.

Probably the most honest song about what Christmas can be for many people, not a time of great happiness. I just wish Kirsty MacColl was here today.
