To think having dessert daily is excessive

When I was growing up, dessert was a common occurance. It was served with lunch at school. At home we would often have dessert in the evening, even if it was just a piece of fruit.

Now I'm a bit older, the idea of it sounds so excessive! Does anyone actually eat dessert more than once a week? Is it possible to stay in-shape/diabetes-free with a daily dessert?

We eat pudding every day but I don’t crave sugar even half as much as I crave a good sanctimonious MN food thread. Has no one started one about the horrors of chocolate advent calendars yet?

andpancakesforbreakfast · 04/12/2019 13:12

OP you do know that tomatoes and zucchinis are technically a fruit ,don't you...

so what's so wrong with "desserts" exactly?

Sofast · 04/12/2019 13:21

We have dessert every day. Ice cream often, in the summer it's often fruit and cream and in the winter months crumbles and chocolate puddings. None of us are close to overweight

hsegfiugseskufh · 04/12/2019 13:27

Janice how do I go about getting an invite to super Saturday?! sounds right up my street Grin

mousemousse · 04/12/2019 13:29

I do find it odd that my DD school says not to send in chocolate or crisps and then offers them crumble/cake every day for school dinner when it's completely unnecessary

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/12/2019 13:30

From this thread I have taken away inspiration regarding cake for breakfast and extra pudding on Saturdays. Thanks!
I also kind of hate the word "dessert" and will stick to saying "pudding". Not overly keen on "afters" either.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 04/12/2019 13:39

yes I have dessert everyday after dinner. I'm a size 10/12 and some days will be cake others yogurt/fruit.

if my girls didn't get pudding there would be a riot. it's the worst punishment here no pudding especially for my youngest 😂

Shadowboy · 04/12/2019 13:43

We always have desert for dinner but not breakfast or lunch.
I’m size 8. Healthy (generally!) my OH is slim too. I think portion control and exercise is far more important than a daily dessert!

Beautiful3 · 04/12/2019 13:52

We have dessert at the weekends only. We used to have a slice of cake after each main meal, until I got fat! Agree it's not a good habit to have.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/12/2019 14:00

When I'm active i can eat what i want & stay a healthy weight (5ft 7, 10 st). That includes all the things many on mn claim to completely avoid... desserts, meat, carbs, dairy products etc

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/12/2019 14:02

Mousemousse

Its because school catering companies operate on shoestring budgets and basically dont give big enough portions of the main meal to provide the calories they are supposed to provide. Cakes & puddings are in expensive way to add calories, these days the "puddings" schools provide contain little sugar or are simply sweetened with fruit only.

Without desserts, meat, carbs and dairy products, what is life?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/12/2019 14:06

Tot

Quite!!

Alsohuman · 04/12/2019 14:08

Very non U, darling. It’s pudding.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 04/12/2019 14:11

"Pudding" is a million times worse than "dessert."

andpancakesforbreakfast · 04/12/2019 14:13

People call them what they like.

For me, pudding sound stodgy - Spotted dick, Christmas pudding
all the things I don't like

andpancakesforbreakfast · 04/12/2019 14:14

Without desserts, meat, carbs and dairy products, what is life?

THAT

It's also so much easier to thin and healthy with REAL food, that includes real butter, real sugar. Portion and moderation...

user1493413286 · 04/12/2019 14:15

I was surprised people had dessert every day too but then I thought about it and I do have some kind of treat during each day but it’s not necessarily dessert

Ternet · 04/12/2019 14:16

Post WW11 and after rationing yes people had the daily spotted dick and custard etc. breakfast, lunch sometimes a tea, dinner and even a supper; but health opportunities have changed and there is no need for anything like that or a dessert every day

isseywith4vampirecats · 04/12/2019 14:16

gordon bennet have a dessert dont have a dessert everyone is different i dont have a set pudding every night but do have something sweet between dinner and going to bed and yes im five foot six size ten nine stone i dont care and dont give a toss about other peoples eating habits

Peanutbutteryogurt · 04/12/2019 14:17

We rarely have pudding, maybe on a Sunday or if eating out. It just doesn't occur to me to eat after a normal weeknight dinner, but based on what I've read on MN that makes me the unusual one.

That being said, I don't think it's necessarily excessive. Lots of people have some kind of sweet thing everyday. I don't but if I do I would prefer to have it in the afternoon with a cup of tea.

lifeisgoodagain · 04/12/2019 14:20

I ate it everyday as a kid even if it was tinned fruit and evap. Now it's a rare treat but there's always fruit

andpancakesforbreakfast · 04/12/2019 14:22

there is no need for anything like that or a dessert every day

it's food... of course there is a NEED
it's not more unhealthy than anything else. We always finish meals with a pudding. I bet my meals are a lot healthier than those of many people.

You cannot remove an entire part a meal and call that healthy. If you don't like it, don't have one, but there's no rule that's it's bad.

mousemousse · 04/12/2019 14:23

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland well that explains it. Also explains why my DD is starving most nights as she can't have the puddings (allergies) which is why sometimes I'd like to send her in with a biscuit (but am not allowed to).

Sunflower20 · 04/12/2019 14:50

Yes it's more than excessive. People shouldn't have dessert tbh, we eat too much sugar these days.
