To think having dessert daily is excessive

When I was growing up, dessert was a common occurance. It was served with lunch at school. At home we would often have dessert in the evening, even if it was just a piece of fruit.

Now I'm a bit older, the idea of it sounds so excessive! Does anyone actually eat dessert more than once a week? Is it possible to stay in-shape/diabetes-free with a daily dessert?

OP posts:

Yes. Bite me.

PhilSwagielka · 04/12/2019 09:27

Sorry, I meant NO.

Thelaughinggnome123 · 04/12/2019 09:27

My bmi is 20 and I have a pudding every single day. Greek yoghurt unsweetened, with nuts and a few berries, it's yummy and stops me nibbling all evening.

PineappleDanish · 04/12/2019 09:29

I usually have a yoghurt after dinner.

A WHOLE yoghurt! What gluttony! A single low fat yoghurt would last me a fortnight! A mere sniff of a proper dessert and that's me for a month!

Seriously OP. Get a grip. A piece of fruit a day isn't dessert. That's healthy eating.

rhubarbcrumbles · 04/12/2019 09:29

It might be excessive for you and not for others, it's personal preference. For me, it's excessive as I couldn't eat a full meal and then a proper dessert like crumble or whatever but a yoghurt or piece of fruit is fine.

IfNot · 04/12/2019 09:35

I like to leave an hour between my tea and my crumble so I have more room.
We often have homemade crumble for breakfast the next day. Lovely with a cup of tea.

HappydaysArehere · 04/12/2019 09:36

After our main meal I have a sugar rush. Usually fruit like frozen cherries heated and put on an almond base. That lasts about three days. However,it is the coffee ice cream after that does for me soendeavouring not to buy it...but doesn’t often work.

Alsohuman · 04/12/2019 09:37

When my parents were growing up in the 1920s poorer households ate a suet pudding - spotted dick or treacle pudding - as the first course so the kids didn’t eat much (expensive) meat.

As adults they had a proper, home made pudding every day, both lived to their late 90s and neither was overweight.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/12/2019 10:45

I think breakfast is worse than a daily dessert.

Yep nothing worse than the meal that starts your metabolism for the day Hmm

SupersonicGerm · 04/12/2019 10:48

I have dessert twice a dayXmas Grin

MustardScreams · 04/12/2019 10:50

We have desserts at the weekend, or if we’re having a special dinner.

I have a thing about weaning babies being given pudding after lunch and dinner, I just hate it and I don’t know why. My mother was aghast dd didn’t have dessert apart from after Sunday dinner.

Foghead · 04/12/2019 10:52

I’ve just been looking at quick easy dessert recipes as I’ve decided to give my kids dessert every day to stop them from eating a pile of biscuits an hour after dinner.
They’re slim and active and probably need a bit more food.

WallyWallyWally · 04/12/2019 10:53

Most people here in France eat dessert daily, and obesity rates are way lower.

A lot depends on how you define “dessert” though: small bowl of apple compote or plain yoghurt with a teaspoon of sugar on top vs sponge and custard or a pile of ice cream? Portions are small here too.

Butchyrestingface · 04/12/2019 10:54

At home we would often have dessert in the evening, even if it was just a piece of fruit.

Would you think a piece of fruit after dinner everyday is excessive?

june2007 · 04/12/2019 10:59

Afew things to note. 1 portion sizes are generally biiger then they used to be. 2 We eat a lot more snacks. Surely it is better to have a two course meal which will last you to the next meal then to have 1 course and eating choc bar/sweets.

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2019 11:03

“ Would you think a piece of fruit after dinner everyday is excessive?”

Think of the sugar!!

Remember, this is Mumsnet, where I was told I shouldn’t give my children peas because they are “too carby”...

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/12/2019 11:10

Insert words like slurping, guzzling, gobbling etc. A few pages of I'm 5 foot 5 and weigh 6 stone, references to obesity crisis, half a tin of soup fills me up for hours, boom you've got yourself a MN food thread.

Don't know what you mean. I had half a grape (peeled, obvs) yesterday morning and I was stuffed to the gills. I had to force a bit of lettuce down my neck earlier today and I know that was greedy of me. If I really let go for special occasions, I can eat an entire individual dough ball (I know, oink oink, right!)

However on the flip side, I inhale fruit and veg by the metric ton.

I don't even know what "pizza" is and I'd be instantly sick if I had to even smell McDonalds food.

I have a healthy BMI, an athletic physique, and regularly do quite well in races (running/triathlon). I eat pudding twice per day most days 😂 My husband is 6’3 wears a men’s small, has a 26 inch waist, competes at a fairly high level, and eats more than anyone you’ve ever met.

So yes, you definitely can eat dessert daily and not be overweight or diabetic.

mauvaisereputation · 04/12/2019 11:25

I'm the opposite -- never had a daily dessert growing up and now I often have 2 a day! It's fine...

midnightmisssuki · 04/12/2019 11:27

If you mean fruit/yoghurt/after 8 sort of thing - I have multiple and so fo the kids 😂 (not the after8)

GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/12/2019 11:32

@BertrandRussell that's hilarious! What were the suggested alternatives?

hsegfiugseskufh · 04/12/2019 11:32

I usually have something after tea. Maybe a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea, or a chocolate bar, or whatever.

i'm not overweight Shock

Velveteenfruitbowl · 04/12/2019 11:34

I find it very odd to have something after every single meal. You’ve just eaten!

hsegfiugseskufh · 04/12/2019 11:36

giveherhell I know! I must immediately cut out dessert and eat only vegetables 3 times a day - but not peas. Too carby eh Bertrand?

(Christ on a bike! peas are my favourite veg!)

MN is like an alternate universe when it comes to food, isn't it?
