Stuff going missing

PostcodeJack · 03/12/2019 23:44

Lately things are going missing from the house. Amongst other things, eg. 40 fags from bedside table (no way I smoked 80 fags in 24 hours) and 20 quid from same. 20 quid was in a make up bag that sits in locker that is never out but was on bed, missing tenner, when I got home.

DP denies all knowledge. I've searched the house multiple time but to no avail.

These aren't big things in the scheme of things but having stripped searched the house, I'm at a loss as to where the stuff has gone.

Any ideas as to what's going on other than a) chain smoking ghost with a cash flow issue or b) I'm going nuts?

Do you ever find your parcels places on your bed when no one is in the house? Do rocks your from front garden ever get placed on your front step?

differentnameforthis · 06/12/2019 11:14

Do you rent, op?

PostcodeJack · 06/12/2019 12:03

I own the house. In terms of other stuff going missing, spare keys, underwear, chargers etc

Underwear is worrying. This happened to my cousin and it was the landlord, but obviously it can't be that in your case.

Can you agree with DH to install some discreet cameras just for a week for example?

You can just turn them on when you're out so it wouldn't be too intrusive. He must want to work this out too surely?

BlackCatSleeping · 06/12/2019 13:27

Spare keys? I’d be very concerned.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/12/2019 14:07

I often wonder about that ironing board...

Who changed your locks? A locksmith/handyman?

PostcodeJack · 06/12/2019 17:15

I changed the locks. DP would happily have cameras, it's me that's anti them (feel self-conscious) but perhaps that's the way forward. It seems to happen in little spates so perhaps I'm just not registering what I'm doing. Ironically the cigarettes bothered me the most and that turned out to be me falsely remembering

Ah so it's other stuff besides valuables?
Might well be a cat then. Or a ghost. Think you would probably notice other stuff if it were the later though (like pp said about hearing someone crying in the hall).

You definitely should set some cameras up.

AFairlyHardAvocado · 06/12/2019 17:25

OP can you just set the cameras to film when you're out? I'm sure you can switch them on or use an app to do so, on your way out?

When I first moved here strange things kept happening. Things being moved, cups on the draining board when I got home, towels being used whilst I was out, random jumpers appearing, loft hatch being opened etc (I lived on my own). I really thought I was losing the plot then. Turns out (I discovered after many weeks of this) that my dad had been letting himself in to look at "jobs he thought needed doing" without telling me. My parents no longer have a key.

I did read the ironing board thread but my ironing board remains where it is. I don't iron (so why I have two irons is beyond me)

Anything that's going isn't valuable. Just bits that are irritating to misplace ( which is what I'm now assuming I'm doing). I think I'll have to accept it's an age thing since this pre-dates the cats (and although they too hide things from me, I doubt they can get into the underwear drawer)

Maybe the previous owners/tenants still have keys.

Did you change the locks when you moved in op?

Pineapple1 · 06/12/2019 19:27

Get a neos smart cam.
Approx 20 quid.

Myusernameisunique · 06/12/2019 20:18

@PostcodeJack growing up I had a cat that could open then get into a drawer and close it behind him. He did it when he was scared so around guy Fawkes night and things. Could give you quite a fright to open a kitchen drawer reaching for a tea towel to find a cat instead! So (some) cats can definitely open drawers. He used to open the fridge as well. My pets used to have many a midnight feast until my DMum got a child lock!

ballsdeep · 06/12/2019 20:19

Maybe there is someone living in your attic?

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 06/12/2019 20:26

My friend had stuff like this going missing from her house. Turned out that there was a hole in the attic thought to next door and their teenage son had been coming in for months helping himself to stuff.

PostcodeJack · 06/12/2019 20:27

@myusername Boy cat can get into a bottom drawer (and shut it behind himself) but underwear drawer is too high for him (at the moment)

SPARE KEYS!!! Goodness sake woman! This is the single most important and pertinent bit of information that should have been in your OP.

PostcodeJack · 07/12/2019 15:01

@circle the spare keys were not keys to my place but spare keys I was holding for someone else
Again, I can now only assume I've put them somewhere so safe I'll never find them again

Are you going to get a camera OP? There are decent cheapy ones on Amazon. I couldn't let this continue I'd be too curious!
