Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

@sall74 Hmm Because no one on tax credits or UC is ever supposed to have a holiday or anything nice, eh?

Audreyhelp · 03/12/2019 06:54

Hope it’s yours

Please let us know what happens!!

x2boys · 03/12/2019 06:58

Isn't this the wrong time of the year for tax credits rebates ? Isn't it normally after the renewal in april?

thisisallnewtome8 · 03/12/2019 06:59

I actually agree with Sali74

NotQuitePerfect · 03/12/2019 07:01

So do I. DH and I work 100 hours a week between us.
There’s no way we could ever, ever afford to go to New York.
Christmas or any other time.

speakout · 03/12/2019 07:02

Like others I would contact the bank first to see where the money has come from.

Bippety · 03/12/2019 07:03

@sall74 a rebate means that the poster had been underpaid that amount, so scrimping on less than deemed to be appropriate. Yes on the one hand saving the rebate would be the sensible thing to do, on the other hand, it might be the only time they ever have that much money at once; why not have a holiday, especially not knowing if you'll be able to afford another. Or, if it's tax credits from working (or whatever the situation), then it's only what was owed.

SunshineCake · 03/12/2019 07:06

I hope it is a back date.

I'd get the kids an extra treat then save for a rainy day.

Ohdearohdearyme · 03/12/2019 07:07

Another person who really hopes you keep it, OP. And, if you do, I hope you do treat yourself to something if poss.

ForeverFaff · 03/12/2019 07:07

I dreamt I was accidentally sent wads of money in an ebay purchase! I kept it.

PollyPelargonium52 · 03/12/2019 07:07

I agree about Gateway account. Very handy.

PollyPelargonium52 · 03/12/2019 07:10

Sorry but it is common sense that you let DWP know and don't spend a penny of it. On the other hand if it turns out to be legitimately yours then enjoy spending it.

Bippety · 03/12/2019 07:10

@NotQuitePerfect assuming they didn't fly business class and stay in a 5* hotel, you can go to NY (flights and 3 nights in a hotel) for under £300. Yes a lot of money, but not outrageously expensive. My maths isn't great, but if you're doing 100 hours between you, assuming you're both on at least MN, that's over £2600 a month take home pay? I know rent etc is expensive, but over a year could you not save £50 a month? We haven't been on holiday for years, but I don't begrudge others if they have the chance amid counting every £.

ememem84 · 03/12/2019 07:10

I do hope it’s yours op.

I had a cheque through from our local fax office (not Hmrc as am Channel Islands) for £3000 last year. My name. My address. No idea what it was for. The reference was “xxx gift fund” so I emailed them with a pic of the cheque. They said it was for my student finance. I went back and forth for a while before it clicked with me that there’s someone else here with the same name as me. And it was an error. I called them and they were adamant that I had applied for funding. Even emailed me the other persons applications and correspondence.

In the end I sent the cheque back. I could have easily cashed it though. Because there was evidence that “I” had applied for the funding.

stucknoue · 03/12/2019 07:14

I'm waiting on a ppi claim - have you one outstanding? Just a thought

JoGose · 03/12/2019 07:14

I hope it’s yours OP

IVEgotthetinselBITCHES · 03/12/2019 07:15

I also just checked hopefully to see if this had happened to me too but it hasnt. Disappointing.

housinghelp101 · 03/12/2019 07:16

@MarshallPNutt I know it does now, but honestly at the time it seemed plausible Blush I am with VM and my bill had been really high the last few times so they said they had intended to transfer £300 into my account but by mistake put in £3k. They knew all of details and even said my internet speed was not optimum so arranged for a man to come with a new router. Or maybe I'm just a mug.

Is it a round number? If so it’s unlikely to be a tax rebate

billybagpuss · 03/12/2019 07:22

As a pp said, it could have come from anywhere. Call the bank this morning and ask, they should also be able to check if their details are consistent with previous tax credit payments so you will know for sure.

Then call the tax credit people and check.

Then move it to an interest paying deposit account until you know for sure.

user1497997754 · 03/12/2019 07:23

I really hope it's for you and that you can treat yourself x

Sparklesocks · 03/12/2019 07:24

@sall74 Really no need for such a petty little dig
