To think I’m not lazy for getting my shopping delivered..

AG29 · 01/12/2019 20:51

So, I get my shopping delivered most weeks. Mainly because I have social anxiety and shopping is a struggle, nearest large supermarket is 20 minutes away, time, children with sen who don’t like shopping and I also spend less money getting it delivered as I don’t pick up any unnecessary items.

A few times mil and her partner have said I am lazy for not going to the shop, stupid for not shopping or trying Aldi or Lidl to save some money (I tend to get shopping delivered by Tesco most weeks, sometimes Asda or occasionally Sainsburys).

Stupid comments like go to the shop like a normal person, how would you come back in our day, you’d save so much money! They aren’t just trying to be helpful. It’s just their way or no way.

I’m sick of it.

I’m sick of the ‘we coped without back in the day’. Surely we all use things that are more readily available to us now and make our lives easier?

YANBU. They're judgy twats. You're doing something to make your life less difficult, tell them to do one!

wendz86 · 01/12/2019 20:54

YANBU Getting online shopping delivered is well worth it not to drag kids round a supermarket.

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 01/12/2019 20:55

I could easily go to a supermarket but I choose not to. I pay £5 p/m for a delivery pass then someone picks, packs and delivers my shopping to me while I sit on my arse at home. If you're lazy then so am I Grin

TheHootiestOwl · 01/12/2019 20:56

Why on earth would you take kids round a supermarket if you didn’t have to? I used to do it when my eldest was a toddler but now online shopping is there for a reason.

OverthinkingThis · 01/12/2019 20:57

YANBU. Are your MIL and her partner retired? My retired PILs can turn a supermarket trip into practically a whole day out... Me, I prefer to do the food shop on my phone in front of the TV. I don't have any specific barriers, I just hate going round the supermarket! Some people just don't understand opinions that are different from their own.

countdowntochristmas · 01/12/2019 20:57

Course it's not lazy it just makes life easier . I mean is using a washing machine / dishwasher lazy , having a car lazy ? No

BingoLittlesUncle · 01/12/2019 20:58

If it makes you happy and it works for you who cares what they think.

And as for this "how would you have coped in their day", bollocks, my DM was getting her shopping delivered from the local grocers back in the 1960s. And we weren't posh. DF was a postman in S London FFS!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/12/2019 20:59

I think you are being economical with your time getting it delivered, and yes it may be a bit pricier than aldi/Lidl, but you could argue back that online shopping helps prevent impulse buying when you are at the supermarket. Do whatever suits you!

Imonaplane · 01/12/2019 21:00

YANBU. I have had my shopping delivered every week for the last 18 years for no reason other than I want to.

Ikeameatballs · 01/12/2019 21:00

YANBU.

We get shopping delivered for no reasons other than convenience and, as you say, I think the cost of the delivery pass is easily offset by not buying random items that are on offer/you don’t need.

Pipandmum · 01/12/2019 21:00

I don't see the difference between getting it delivered and actually going to the shop. Except you save time, save on petrol, better for the environment, you aren't tempted by things you don't need, and its convenient.

Pollaidh · 01/12/2019 21:00

Bollocks.

DH occasionally has a moan about how we should do 'proper' shopping, but always changes his mind after trying to do even a small shop on a weekend with 2 DC in tow.

StrongTeaDropOfMilkNoSugar · 01/12/2019 21:02

YANBU. I get my shopping delivered because I work 60-70 hours a week and don’t want to waste my non work time in a supermarket. Your reasons for online shopping are even more valid than mine.

Also, in response to the comments that you’ve received that it’s a waste of money, I’ve found that since shopping online we’ve saved money. We plan our meals better and are less likely to be tempted by impulse purchases we’d make in a physical store.

Carry on doing what you are doing if it works for you!

Celebelly · 01/12/2019 21:02

YANBU. I have no desire to spend my free time schlepping round the shop with baby in tow on a weekly basis. I much prefer it being brought into my kitchen and picking my food from the comfort of my sofa!

Celebelly · 01/12/2019 21:03

Also on the rare occasion we go into a supermarket to do a shop we spend a bloody fortune.

RingtheBells · 01/12/2019 21:03

We get ours delivered and I‘m semi retired so have loads of time to go to the supermarket down the road but choose not to, it’s not lazy I just choose to do other things with my time.

KellyHall · 01/12/2019 21:03

You're not lazy and it's not costing you more money. Especially if you use the delivery saver subscription and swap your Clubcard points for triple their value in restaurant vouchers, or similar. Discount supermarkets are stressful and you don't get reward points.

Having shopped and worked at some of the supermarkets in your post, I can tell you that if you shop sensibly (which is far easier to do online than in a shop with children - you can't sort items by price low-high in person!!), you would spend the exact same amount in Tesco and Aldi. Aldi has cheap products and premium products, Tesco has the same.

Tell them to go fuck themselves and worry about their own lack of knowledge before they slag you off!

Cantsleeppast3am · 01/12/2019 21:04

I really do hate the "we coped in my day" line!
They did want they had to do because they had to!!
If they'd have had an option to make life easier they'd have taken it!!!

OverByYer · 01/12/2019 21:04

YANBU why would anyone want to go food shopping when they don’t need to?

TheCouncilDestroyedMyWall · 01/12/2019 21:05

In my first house, the delivery man used to laugh as you could almost see Tesco from my front door... However apparently I wasn't the closest house they delivered to Grin ignore them, it's much easier and I save more money by not walking round picking stuff I don't need up!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 01/12/2019 21:06

I get my shopping delivered every week. When I do have to pop in to get the odd thing I see whole families trailing around doing 'the big shop' on a weekend morning and wonder wtf they are doing - dragging a load of kids round a supermarket on a precious weekend morning feels to me like trying to send a fax; there's just no need for it in 2019.

PotNooodle · 01/12/2019 21:08

I get mine delivered because i get murderous thoughts If I go into the shop. It’s better for everyone if I get it delivered.

KindergartenKop · 01/12/2019 21:08

Hand them your kids and a shopping list and let them experience the joy!

Food shopping is lovely if you have the time to Potter but not everyone does.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/12/2019 21:08

YANBU
we always do.internet shopping for food. DH and I work ft and live rurally. There is no way either of us are prepared to give up precious Weekend time to do the shopping.

80skid · 01/12/2019 21:08

You don't need to justify yourself to them. So don't!
