To think I’m not lazy for getting my shopping delivered..

AG29 · 01/12/2019 20:51

So, I get my shopping delivered most weeks. Mainly because I have social anxiety and shopping is a struggle, nearest large supermarket is 20 minutes away, time, children with sen who don’t like shopping and I also spend less money getting it delivered as I don’t pick up any unnecessary items.

A few times mil and her partner have said I am lazy for not going to the shop, stupid for not shopping or trying Aldi or Lidl to save some money (I tend to get shopping delivered by Tesco most weeks, sometimes Asda or occasionally Sainsburys).

Stupid comments like go to the shop like a normal person, how would you come back in our day, you’d save so much money! They aren’t just trying to be helpful. It’s just their way or no way.

I’m sick of it.

I’m sick of the ‘we coped without back in the day’. Surely we all use things that are more readily available to us now and make our lives easier?

YANBU. Why anyone would want to take their SEN child to the supermarket is beyond me (unless said child happens to adore it!) and that's without any other issues. I have mine delivered each week for what it's worth.

rslsys · 01/12/2019 21:09

26 mile round trip to our nearest chain supermarket. I can't drive there for the price that they will deliver it to me for. No brainer!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 01/12/2019 21:30

Even if it IS lazy, what does it matter? Why shouldn’t you make life easier for yourself? There are no extra points on offer for doing it the hard way.

I really do hate the "we coped in my day" line!

Me too. It makes it sound like they had a choice! They ‘coped’ without online shopping because it didn’t exist, just as we coped without mobile phones, TV on demand etc. because we didn’t know any different.

messolini9 · 01/12/2019 21:30

A few times mil and her partner have said I am lazy

Damn right. You should be taking your washing to the river & beating it with rocks, baking your own bread once weekly at the communal village oven, digging a new latrine hole every year & slaughtering your own livestock.
I'm sure you'll see MiL & her partner doing the same, "coping" just as they did in 1872 ...

1300cakes · 01/12/2019 21:35

Agree with everyone, it's just using a normal service offered, hardly anything weird. It's actually extremely cheap when you think about it, just a few £ and you get whatever you want right brought to your door! A bargain really.

Its also probably cheaper and healthier, I know I'm always tempted by junk food when I'm in the store. "Oh look a new chocolate bar, better try this... Chips are on sale, yes please...".

Michaelbaubles · 01/12/2019 21:36

I get mine delivered from laziness. Who gives a fuck? I work full time, I have two kids, I can’t be arsed with supermarkets. Laziness rules!

1300cakes · 01/12/2019 21:38

Even if it was lazy (which it isn't imo) what would be wrong with that? I love when people tell me I'm "taking the easy way" as if it's bad. I say "yep I sure am, great isn't it!"

QueenWhatevs · 01/12/2019 21:40

Lol, I'm sure they churn their own butter and handwash their clothes in a big wooden tub too. Idiots. Why do something a difficult way when you can do it in an easier way with the same result?

TurquoiseDress · 01/12/2019 21:42

YANBU!

I always get the big shop delivered, I would never dream of taking the 2 DC with me- I wouldn't be able to think straight!

That's not to say they've never set foot in a supermarket, it's only when buying a couple of things & not in a hurry

Also, DH never does household shop do it's just be me getting it sorted- so I'd rather do it on my laptop & sit on the sofa waiting for it if arrive Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/12/2019 21:49

I had never been a fan of online ( I write a list and get inspiration from having a nosey in other peoples trolleys Grin )

But I had surgery done a few weeks ago so I've had to do it (making sure DH or the DC are in the help with the delivery) and I am kicking myself for not doing it earlier .

The first couple of times I thought "What a faff" but there's the favourites list and take it from there .

I went to our local Aldi (for a walk) last week and got rammed in my side three bloody times Angry with elbows and baskets . OK, they couldn't see I had surgery and I don't wear a banner advertising it , but I was mangled by the time I got out!

fridgegrazer · 01/12/2019 21:50

I don't have small children, I don't work full time but I still have mine delivered. If someone says I'm lazy I just say "Yeah maybe I am but what the hell - tea? or gin "

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 01/12/2019 21:51

When I go into the supermarket (rather than doing an internet shop) I spend more money!

PinkiOcelot · 01/12/2019 21:55

I get my shopping delivered every Sunday morning. I work full time and can’t be arsed to go do a full shop on a weekend.

It’s there for us to use, why wouldn’t we use it. Nothing lazy about it.

Dollymixture22 · 01/12/2019 21:56

Your mil sounds quite stupid. Unfortunately this is likely untreatable.

Therefore ignore her.

Livelovebehappy · 01/12/2019 22:01

Nobodies business but yours. Why does it affect them how you do your shopping? I get my shopping delivered and I would even pay extra to actually have them put it away for me too, so I guess that makes me super lazy!!!

Jaxhog · 01/12/2019 22:02

YANBU! Take no notice. You'll be the one relaxing at home while they're slogging around the supermarket. You're no more lazy than someone who chooses not to walk 10 miles to work! Sure, you could do it, but why would you if you don't have to?

Nogoodnickname · 01/12/2019 22:03

YANBU!

Ignore your mil and her partner, they obviously have no idea how much of a struggle it is for you. If they are aware of your social anxiety and children with sen then they should be much more understanding. Actually even without all of that why should you not be able to do that?

I regularly get my shopping delivered and that’s because I have a chronic health problem and a 4 year old DS, so it’s better for me to do an online grocery shop to be delivered than go out to the store.

QueenWhatevs · 01/12/2019 22:04

@70isaLimitNotaTarget when I had an Ocado delivery after appendicitis, the lovely driver noticed I looked peaky and when I explained I was a few days post surgery, they offered to unpack all my shopping. Kicked the ass of a schlep round tesco.

Thestrangestthing · 01/12/2019 22:08

YANBU apart from all the other reasons that it's easier for you to have shopping delivered, food shopping is a tedious task. Why give yourself the hassle!

MajesticWhine · 01/12/2019 22:08

YANBU. DM says stuff like this. Thinks I'm lazy for not going to the supermarket Confused

TheSandman · 01/12/2019 22:11

Our nearest Tesco is 35 miles away. That's a 70 mile round trip. It's cheaper for us to get it delivered. It's also more environmentally friendly - the same van will deliver to several homes in the village/local area, saving each customer a similar trip.

If the van delivers to 10 people on the same day in the area around us, that will work out at a saving of roughly 630 road miles (10 times 70 miles for each customer minus 70 miles for the van).

carrots555 · 01/12/2019 22:13

Pah!

I was once told I was 'so lazy' for not making my own baked beans...

In all seriousness...

Yerbumsootthewindae · 01/12/2019 22:14

You are not lazy. It's a service that exists for customers' convenience. I do an online shop most weeks and have done for about 12 years. I hate the supermarket and spend a lot on impulse purchases; online shopping encourages me to meal plan and consider my purchases more carefully.
I have friends who swear by Aldi/Lidl but I tried it for a month and didn't actually save any money, had to go to Tesco anyway to get the things that Aldi didn't have and it was more time-consuming.
Carry on and ignore them!

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 01/12/2019 22:16

Well I'm old enough to remember the baker, butcher and greengrocer coming round in their vans and delivering back in the 60's so shopping delivery is hardly new, just different. Maybe mil thinks we should return to the days before supermarkets and ask for everything at a counter. I do my main shop online with small top ups in store now, she is being ridiculous.

PumpkinP · 01/12/2019 22:19

Really wow I get the opposite. Told I’m stupid for not getting it delivered!
