The Beverly household is at a loggerhead. There will be no turkey should we not resolve this issue, family members will refuse to visit, the children will demand more expensive gifts and and the pigs will surely shed their blankets.

Which baubles shall we decorate our tree with? The classic set or the more modern set?

Please help us avoid a Christmas disaster.

Classic?

I have an eclectic mix of german glass from 1930s -1980s so I might not be the best advisor on how to make tree look unified. Blush

Ninkanink · 01/12/2019 09:16

I am also generally a traditionalist but I agree, the modern ones are much, much nicer.

EleanorReally · 01/12/2019 09:17

yup, modern

Dahlietta · 01/12/2019 09:17

Depends if you want your filler baubles to look uniform. The modern set aren’t going to look as much like a set on a tree with lots of extra treasured baubles, whereas the others still might.

crispysausagerolls · 01/12/2019 09:18

Modern are nicer but also I never believe people who posted on AIBU “by accident” as opposed to just admitting it’s for traffic

Awrite · 01/12/2019 09:19

For me it's both. They look like they go together. I should admit though that I have no eye for design.

AllergicToAMop · 01/12/2019 09:19

Hold up. Which are classical? The second picture with the snowflake?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 01/12/2019 09:20

@crispysausagerolls if you're on the app and have searched for a certain topic then create a post it automatically posts in that topic

BeverlyLincolnScripts · 01/12/2019 09:21

Ok. We’ve regrouped (from our bed where we are having a child free morning) and found these.

We’re thinking of getting these and the modern ones from first post and going half and half.

Thank you wise mumsnetters. You have saved our Christmas.

Until we get to whether we should have tinsel or not. Spoiler alert - there will be no tinsel.

NB: is it kind of sad that our first child free morning since having dd, 6 months ago, has been spent with a cup of tea and a bauble discussion?! Confused

Modern!

UniversallyUnchallenged · 01/12/2019 09:23

You need to set that voting thing... they both look lovely, I’m always very unhelpful from the fence I sit on

AllIWantForChristmasIsTomHardy · 01/12/2019 09:24

Modern by a landslide

CraftyYankee · 01/12/2019 09:24

It is not sad. It is a miracle that you're awake! Clearly a Xmas miracle...

BeverlyLincolnScripts · 01/12/2019 09:27

Haha Universally if someone pushed you off the fence and made you pick?

Crafty we both woke up about 3 times in the night to check on the baby - we don’t even do that when she’s here because she sleeps through! PFB incase it needed clarifying Wink

@GiveHerHellFromUs

Ahhhhh makes sense ok - don’t use the app! Thank you

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 01/12/2019 09:28

You can never have too many baubles OR lights. Just throw everything you have at it.

Parky04 · 01/12/2019 09:29

I never get a choice! Mrs Parky has full control over the Christmas tree!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/12/2019 09:29

I like the first set - the pastels - but only because they remind me of the ones that we had that were already old when I was born in the 60s. They were so beautiful. There were also lanterns that I think were made in Hong Kong - they said 'Empire Made'. I think some of the baubles may have been made in the Czech Republic.

Ninkanink · 01/12/2019 09:32

I don’t think you should mix; the colours are too disparate. Unless your other ornaments are of an eclectic enough nature in colour/style that it’ll tie it all together.

HeatedDryer · 01/12/2019 09:36

This is why I have two trees. 'My' tree in the lounge is only allowed to be decorated with colour coordinated decorations, very similar to the 2nd pic you posted OP. The other tree is in the kitchen and is decorated with all the non matching shite more traditional decorations. Job done.
(But no one else touches my treeAngryGrin)

minesasausagesupper · 01/12/2019 09:39

Do people buy new colour combination decorations every year for their trees? I've go so many 'special' decorations that my tree looks like a quality street explosion. Love a goods mish mash Grin :)

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 01/12/2019 09:44

Do you new baubles every year? Sorry to be a Grinch and a holler than thou must buy that's very bad for the environment!

SoupDragon · 01/12/2019 09:54

Half of each didn’t even occur to us AuntieStella and we’ve been ‘discussing’ this for over a week.

😂😂😂

The obvious answer is often over looked in the heat of a fierce debate!

SoupDragon · 01/12/2019 09:55

I always buy some new baubles every year. I live in hope of buying a house where I can have a tree big enough to display them all. Windsor Castle should do it.

GnomeDePlume · 01/12/2019 09:57

My preference would be for plain baubles - no glitter, frosting etc. Any random decorations selected by DCs when out with GPs were discretely lost. If DCs want random non standard decorations they can put them on their own trees!
