To not wipe worktops every day?

Just that, really.

Prompted by the d&v thread. Obviously if I’ve cut meat or esp chicken on them they get wiped with washing up liquid, but I don’t shine em, bleach em, or antibac them ever. They get a rub down with regular washing up liquid when they look dirty. Can be days! Minger?

How often do you wipe them?

I have used glass chopping boards for years and just replaced the ones I've had for over 10 years with 2(a couple of quid each) from B&M.
Very easy to clean with hot soapy water.

ChristmasConcert · 30/11/2019 23:40

@CherryPavlova that must be the other end of the spectrum...Grin!

I do wipe my worktops with hot soapy water several times a day - the crumbs from the toaster and slicing bread make such a mess, and all the other bits etc although I use a chopping board. I also do the board - but if we have chopped meat or fish I might anti-bac it, otherwise very hot soapy water.

I'm sure I read that you can't kill salmonella with anti-bac, but need hot water, so when I handle raw chicken I'm always really careful to have lots of hot water and washing up liquid to clean everything.

I use J cloths and relegate them to the utility every few days, and replace. (I don't wash up with them, I use a brush). I wash Tea towels and hand towels when I think about it.

My cat is beautifully trained and never sits on worktops so that's not a concern....Halo. However, he has been known to sneak onto the kitchen table so that does get Dettoxed quite regularly. Mostly it still just gets the hot water treatment though...….

Luckily we seem to be a fairly D&V free family (famous last words...…)

Mopmum35 · 30/11/2019 23:40

Worktops done every day with method anti bac

bonbonours · 30/11/2019 23:47

If you use your kitchen to cook in I don't understand how you wouldn't end up wiping surfaces regularly. I am really not a clean freak in fact I am pretty lax and my house is definitely more on the mucky side than most. But kitchen surfaces still get wiped with kitchen spray at least once a day. Another one here who doesn't understand using washing up liquid for surfaces. I tried it once when I ran out of spray cleaner and it's really hard to wipe away all the bubbles....

BustedDreams · 30/11/2019 23:49

I wipe counters down every time I use them to prepare food or drinks. When I close the kitchen at night I move stuff and wipe them in their entirety. Cloths are permanently in a small bowl of disinfectant or bleach. Tea towels changed once damp. Pleased to say our family has never had food poisoning.

BustedDreams · 30/11/2019 23:52

On reading full thread I’ve realised my dogs eating bowls get washed more times than some people wipe their kitchen counters down. Dogs bowls are washed after each feed.

TooSweetToBeSour · 30/11/2019 23:56

At least once a day because;

  1. they’re pure white, so any mark shows (not my colour choice!)
  2. cat definitely enjoys night time strolls on them looking for any leftover morsels
  3. I recently had terrible food poisoning (from a restaurant) and sure as shit never want to get it again!

Method rhubarb spray smells good

TooSweetToBeSour · 30/11/2019 23:58

PS any naive people with cats saying they never go on their worktops - I thought the same for a long time but trust me, they’re all over them while you’re asleep or out of the house! Grin

Aloe6 · 01/12/2019 00:04

Also bear in mind that dettol is extremely dangerous to cats so if you’re using it on surfaces they walk over you risk poisoning them.

Dinoctoblock · 01/12/2019 00:05

Maybe we’re really messy food preppers, but if DH or I have made food I need to wipe down afterwards. So usually at least three times a day. The table needs wiped down after every meal or snack as the kids are grubby too. The floor also needs swept after each meal as the baby is currently chucking any food she doesn’t want to eat on the floor. The floor really needs mopped daily too, but I only do it once a week (if I’m feeling energetic).

ClientListQueen · 01/12/2019 00:09

@TooSweetToBeSour mine doesn't climb. He got on the worktop once, and howled until I rescued him. I gave the cat tree away as he refused to go above the first step Confused
Yes, he's defective Grin
He's very much "why would I climb or catch things when I can cuddle mama?"

Noti23 · 01/12/2019 00:11

I use anti-bac while cleaning the work tops and do so after preparing food. Usually 3 times a day (less if I’ve been out and not at all if I’ve not cooked). Me and dp have had d+v twice since January last year and I’ve had around 9 colds. I’ve never been more ill in my life but that may be due to having a nearly 1 year old!

CherryPavlova · 01/12/2019 00:16

ChristmasConcert Chopping boards go in the dishwasher each time......

Not got through the first page but serious? That's rank unless you never use your kitchen to prepare/cook hmm

Why is it rank? I prepare food on chopping boards and plates, and they get washed afterwards. No food is directly prepared on or eaten from the worktops.*

I too prepare food on chopping boards - inevitably crumbs/splashesn escape the chopping board - tea stains drip from making a cuppa - yak - again - it's rank not to wipe down your surfaces at least daily and can't believe anyone would do it weekly

Creepster · 01/12/2019 00:17

I have granite worktops and use chopping mats and boards so I only give them a thorough going over with 50/50 alcohol and water about once a week. The rest of the time I wipe the area I worked in after tucking the cutting mats in the dishwasher.
I noticed that the more stuff I had out the less often I thoroughly cleaned, so I have been keeping the worktops clear lately. I like the look as well as the efficiency.

TanquerayTickles · 01/12/2019 00:20

I think it depends on your worktops. I do mine minimum twice a day with zoflora then ad hoc as and when they need them if I've made a sandwich or something. But I've got black quartz worktops that show every fingerprint and smear which annoys me, you only have to breathe on the bastards and they need cleaning, hence the constant wiping and buffing.

I'm getting a new kitchen next year and I won't be getting the same so any advice on worktops that don't show every fingerprint and smear would be appreciated Grin

LucaFritz · 01/12/2019 00:25

I wipe mine down as i go but once a month or so I'll remove everything off the sides like appliances and general clutter if theres any and give the entire thing a good scrub down, the amount of crumbs and dirt that get under the appliances and in corners is grim

Creepster · 01/12/2019 00:27

I like white worktops so I can see the dirt.
Most speckled granite does not show the mess.

Everycloud12 · 01/12/2019 00:28

I just wipe them after use and as they get used everyday they get wiped everyday.

I used to use just a wet cloth but I've bought some method spray recently and I love the smell of that

gumdrop2 · 01/12/2019 00:29

Is it that bad to be using chemicals ? I clean my toilet with Harpic toilet cleaner about 3 times a day because I love the smell of it I go through around 5 bottles a week

CrowleysBentley · 01/12/2019 00:35

I use chopping boards for food preparation, and I have a tray that cups go on for tea and coffee making that we started using when DC were younger teens I got fed up with finding instant coffee and sugar sprinkled on the side every time they made a drink and it's stayed. I still spray and wipe the sides daily. Just the clementine method stuff, not the antibacterial, it smells lovely.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 01/12/2019 00:36

Hot soapy (washing up liquid) water every couple of days. Don't use any antibac that's toxic to cats, and don't bleach as the cats love the smell and just want to roll all over anything that smells of it.

Chopping is done on chopping boards and they are thoroughly cleaned after use.

If cooking anything elaborate the tops would be wiped down before, after and in-between if needed, but I can make a mess if there's a lot to do.

JassyRadlett · 01/12/2019 00:41

Yes it really is. What do you think happens to the chemicals once they hit the drains? It isn’t possible to remove all the chemicals in wastewater treatment.

The vast majority of this stuff is just taking money from the suggestible and the gullible. At the same time, all the ‘anti-bacterial’ stuff is quietly helping to breed bacteria that are resistant to all the antibiotics currently in the arsenal.

I wouldn’t mind so much if antimcrobial resistance was only going to affect those who overuse and misuse antibiotics and antibacterial products. But you’re going to drag the rest of us down with you too.
