AIBU to ask your advice on how to find a work mentor?

Hi all,

Sorry - I’m posting for traffic!

I’m a civil servant and have just got a place on a talent development programme, for which I’ve been told I’ll need a mentor.

I’ve been looking for a mentor at work for a few months now and haven’t yet found one (I’ve contacted colleagues and asked them for their suggestions on who to get in touch with, and also approached networks at work).

Does anyone here have any advice on getting a mentor, please?

Thanks!

Congratulations on getting your place!

Do you have a line manager or a HR team that you can approach?

In my role, I have requested a mentor as part of my own personal development and my line manager asked our HR department if they knew of anyone who had all of the skillsets that I was interested in learning more about, and they then facilitated the introduction going forward.

I also have an external mentor who I met through an event that they were speaking at, and then got in contact through LinkedIn afterwards - could be worth looking at?

Check out any local networking sites on teams as they often have mentors on there who are available to link up with

Thanks Mrs and Some - really good suggestions! I’ll try them out and see how I get on.
