Hot, savoury, low salt, high protein, quick to cook brekkie?

Alrighteo · 30/11/2019 11:46

AIBU to believe some such items exist?

I don't really eat breakfast and when I eat at brunch time I want something hot and savoury. I don't want pastry (too many kcal). I don't want toast, too many carbs.

I want something either prepacked or quick to cook.

Please could I ask for your suggestions?

Tesco express used to do these quorn cocktail sausages which were hot in 20 secs in microwave, now I can't find them, though haven't looked in a big Tescos yet. They were ideal.

I could do cheese and ham on brown bread I guess.

Not fond of hard boiled eggs, or fried eggs. Omelette seems too much of an effort and mess and time and fiddling about and fustering and never getting it quite right.

I live alone too, so cooking 1 big omelette seems a waste, though I guess I could halve it and have other half tomorrow.

Any ideas for me?

I'm not vegan/veggie. Don't think I'd stomach fish early in the morning.

I'm convinced that if porridge was called something like Spring Water treated Oats or something, everyone would scoff it!

Porridge might make some think of GRUEL as in Oliver Twist or something also.

But it's gorgeous with full fat milk/cream.

Alrighteo · 30/11/2019 20:26

OP - I puked when I tried porridge once. Porridge is out.

Every second poster - Try porridge.

I said, hot and savoury. So some of your other suggestions would not work.

Thanks though (unless you mentioned porridge).

I also said high protein. Not a minimal amount.

But no, I get it....... porridge is my only solution.

Spinach and cheese muffins (easy to freeze). I actually found the recipe in a BLW book, but they're so handy.

Alrighteo · 30/11/2019 20:29

Summertime I'll eat yoghurts and fruit and shit, but right now, I need something hot and savoury.

Yes, the omelettey muffins seem the way to go. Going to spend tomorrow looking at muffin tins. Silicone or a good non-stick one? Where to buy?

I have porridge with fruit
Or fruit and yoghurt
Breakfast muffins
Mini quiches
Omelettes

Bluntness100 · 30/11/2019 20:33

I also don't get the obsession with porridge I also can't stand it, so I hear you. And anyone who does eat it tends to mix it with so much other stuff you'd never know it was actually porridge. Chocolate, Nutella, fruit, nuts, honey, cream, the list is endless, 🤣

Although I have to be honest I'm also not getting why toast is too many carbs but a cheese and ham sandwich isn't. Or why you need to make a big omelette.

For me my fave is fry some chorizo, add two eggs, some grated cheese. Absolutely delicious, a small omelette pan helps, if not, then I guess it could be done in a small pot at a push. Very filling and takes mins,

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 30/11/2019 22:23

So Sandwiches are now low carb, and cheese, bacon & chorizo are low salt.

I’ve obviously been nutritioning wrong.

Sunshines14 · 30/11/2019 22:24

Porridge or scrambled egg - honestly takes only a few minutes and one bowl or egg would fill you right up

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 30/11/2019 22:26

When I make egg muffins for the dc I use a silicone tray thing

Add whatever you like spring onion, peppers, chilli, grated carrots, chicken, cheese

They freeze well so you can make a batch at a time of you wish

7salmonswimming · 30/11/2019 22:43

You’re asking random people for help/ideas. Would it hurt to add in a please or a thank you? Maybe be a bit less terse?

northerngirl2012 · 30/11/2019 23:03

Instead of porridge what about baked oats, add protein based things to make it to suit.

It has eggs, yogurt or quark so has more protein & is filling. Reduce the oats to suit.

northerngirl2012 · 30/11/2019 23:04

And second the muffin omelettes, love them. Sometimes I use bacon, ham or tuna In them too.

Cauliflower cheese for breakfast?

Notcontent · 30/11/2019 23:16

Ok, so the OP doesn’t like porridge - fine. But I think there is a lot of nutritional misinformation on this thread! If you make porridge with proper rolled oats (rather than some sugary mix in a sachet) then it’s low GI and a good source of fibre. My DD actually loves it made just with water and served with a dash of almond milk.

PickAChew · 30/11/2019 23:18

cheese and ham aren't low salt.

Scrambled egg is, though.

NationMcKinley · 30/11/2019 23:24

@7salmonswimming

Yes. Agree completely Hmm

MatildaTheCat · 30/11/2019 23:25

OP is really not very gracious at all. Not once can I see that they have thanked anyone for their suggestions. Quick, however to shoot down anyone suggesting a dish that doesn’t meet the brief.

Try Google. OP. No need to engage with actual people trying to assist you.

PickAChew · 30/11/2019 23:27

5g protein in 30g oats
5g protein in 250ml of semi skimmed milk

That's 10g of protein in a bowl of porridge, before adding any nuts, seeds or anything. More like 20% than 2% RDA.

Namechange322 · 30/11/2019 23:38

OP you are just being rude!

Honestly just do a google search as you clearly have an idea in your mind and no-one’s ideas are good enough for you

CustomerCervixDepartment · 30/11/2019 23:48

I’m vegetarian and not interested in porridge or similar either OP, but you don’t need to restrict yourself to food that’s considered ‘breakfast food’ for food consumed in the morning, just eat whatever you want, the time of day doesn’t matter. What were you going to eat yesterday evening but couldn’t be bothered making? Eat that tomorrow morning. Want houmous (or whatever.) but its ‘not breakfast’? Who gives a shite, eat it.

zurigirl · 01/12/2019 00:19

I mean, don't eat porridge if you don't like it obviously, but I find it a really great breakfast and high in protein. I make it with a mix of grains, not just oats, and milk, not water - then I add chopped nuts and seeds to the pan, and ground nuts on top, with a little milk at the sides so you have a nice contrast between hot and cold. So good! Grin

AllergicToAMop · 01/12/2019 01:05

Want houmous (or whatever.) but its ‘not breakfast’? Who gives a shite, eat it.

Hummus is actually a part of breakfast for many 😁 + Labneh, tomatoes, fried egg and nice bread... Hmmmmmmmm

sashh · 01/12/2019 01:57

Porridge does have protein and it can be savory.

Kedgeree - make a batch and freeze in single portions, microwave on the day.

Hard boiled eggs and ham - half of Europe have something like this for breakfast, usually with cheese.

Kippers are cheap and easy, boil some water and put in a jug add the kippers still in the packet and wait 5 mins, open the packet and eat.

Nasi Goreng - reduce the rice and increase the protein.

Japanese style rolled omelette.

One thing I occasionally do is a sort of fried egg.

Break an egg into a bowl, remove the yolk to another bowl. Add to the egg white some smoked salmon or grated cheese or bacon and whisk lightly with a fork.

Pour the egg white and salmon (or whatever) into a frying pan, make a hole in the centre and put the yolk in the hole, fry then eat. I normally have it on toast but you could have it without.

Miso soup is popular in Japan for breakfast, in fact have a look at Japanese breakfasts apart from the rice they are probably what you are looking for.

Endspeciesism · 01/12/2019 03:20

Scrambled tofu.

It’s really good.

And no cruelty involved.
