Hot, savoury, low salt, high protein, quick to cook brekkie?

AIBU to believe some such items exist?

I don't really eat breakfast and when I eat at brunch time I want something hot and savoury. I don't want pastry (too many kcal). I don't want toast, too many carbs.

I want something either prepacked or quick to cook.

Please could I ask for your suggestions?

Tesco express used to do these quorn cocktail sausages which were hot in 20 secs in microwave, now I can't find them, though haven't looked in a big Tescos yet. They were ideal.

I could do cheese and ham on brown bread I guess.

Not fond of hard boiled eggs, or fried eggs. Omelette seems too much of an effort and mess and time and fiddling about and fustering and never getting it quite right.

I live alone too, so cooking 1 big omelette seems a waste, though I guess I could halve it and have other half tomorrow.

Any ideas for me?

I'm not vegan/veggie. Don't think I'd stomach fish early in the morning.

On a more helpful note, I find soup an excellent winter breakfast. Might have too much salt in for you though?

Rollerbird · 30/11/2019 15:20

I like porridge with protein powder. If you shake up the protein powder and water first then add to porridge and cook it goes very voluminous.

AdaColeman · 30/11/2019 15:49

Bacon sandwich is the obvious answer, quick and crammed with protein, hot and savoury! Black pudding sandwich as an alternative choice.
Cheese on toast?
Baked beans also a great idea.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 30/11/2019 16:05

What about Dahl? I make a quick lunch from precooked potato, lentils, tinned tomatoes and curry powder. You could leave out the potatoes to keep the carbs down, although the fibre in the lentils will smooth the effect on your blood sugar.

Auridon4life · 30/11/2019 16:10

Poached eggs on toast

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/11/2019 16:11

My go to breakfast is crackers with stuff like cheese, houmous, cucumber and chutney on them.

Rollerbird · 30/11/2019 16:12

Dhal is a good shout

I vomited it straight back up and it has never been tried since.

Same happened with me with liver. 25 years later I thought I’d give it another try. Now it’s one of my favourite foods. Ditto avocados. some People’s tastes mature.

TinMansBrain · 30/11/2019 16:20

Porridge with honey and a small blob of butter is simply delicious, and relatively high in protein.

When people say they don't or won't eat porridge I immediately think they have the maturity of a 5 year old.

Brimful · 30/11/2019 16:28

I mentioned Chai seeds & cacao powder, as they're added protein.

I swear that my porridge breakfast has helped keep slim for years, really great start to the day.

It'd be a shame for you to miss out just because of one experience years ago. I had the same experience (vomiting) after eating califlower when I was a kid. I avoided it for years but love it now!

viccat · 30/11/2019 16:30

Cous cous (flavoured ones that come in packets) with mozzarella and tomatoes or any other salad type veg you like to add to it is delicious and super easy to make.

There are vegan cocktail sausages that come frozen and can be quickly cooked in a pan with a bit of oil, or in boiled water if you prefer.

Or make crustless quiche or frittata in advance and heat up a portion in the morning.

Porridge with cheese in = savoury!
Egg muffins
Cheese

If you're not eating until brunch, and have a microwave, soup?
I love Covent Garden lentil and bacon, and make my own chicken and vegetable soup when I cook a chicken.

mumwon · 30/11/2019 16:39

spiced chick peas & puri (mashed pots mixed with flour & cumin seeds fried in little flat circles that puff up - mouth waters haven't done that for ages)

Outsomnia · 30/11/2019 16:41

I'm with the egg folk.

Either scrambled egg or an omellette will do. Very satisfyiing. No need for carbs, but I don't have an issue, so on fair days and holidays, I have a breakfast dessert of hot real butter croissants, Kerrygold butter and a nice jam.

On ordinary days it is porridge with full fat cream and honey.

managedmis · 30/11/2019 16:53

You're dead right about porridge, op. Crap protein content and it'll probably spike your blood sugar.

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/11/2019 16:55

Tuna drained with spinach or red peppers chopped inside.

easyandy101 · 30/11/2019 16:55

Porridge makes me ravenous. By 10 o clock I'm considering eating my colleagues

Toomanycats99 · 30/11/2019 17:01

I make muffin omelettes. I fry up onion pepper and mushrooms. Put a little in the muffin tins. Then pour over the beaten egg. Then I often cook frozen has browns and add a bit of that. Then top with a little chorizo and grated cheese. Lovely.

Hmm. I don’t like the texture. It’s literally the only food I dislike. Are grownups not allowed preferences in your eyes? Ffs.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 30/11/2019 17:03

God this thread is making me hungry.

Op you're not very gracious are you?

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/11/2019 17:12

Eating any carb based meal when you have pcos or diabetes puts you about on the same level, intellectually, as a 5 yo.

AllergicToAMop · 30/11/2019 17:19

Maturity of 5 year old is to not understand people like or dislike different things than them tbh.

ThatLibraryMiss · 30/11/2019 17:28

Shakshuka is delicious. You can pre-cook a batch and either keep it in the fridge or freeze portions. Bring it to the boil in a small frying pan and either make hollows in it and poach eggs therein or poach eggs separately. Serve with bread for wiping up the sauce.

cannycat20 · 30/11/2019 17:45

Shame you're set against porridge - I was going to recommend Flahavans Microwaveable Oats, 2 minutes in the microwave, especially nice with Jersey or gold top milk. And porridge does contain protein. Wink

If porridge really isn't an option though, what about rice cakes or Ryvita or crackers with some nice cheese? Or some nice sausages (meat or veggie) with a poached or a fried egg on toast or fried bread?
