Mine was an empty cardboard box wrapped up.

I once got a box of instant porridge...admittedly I often had it for my lunch but still!

Last year I gifted someone a beautiful Yankee candle set... I then saw it had been donated to the summer fayre raffle... at least gift it where I won't see it! Ffs!

Mammyloveswine · 30/11/2019 10:54

Oh and colleague once got "50 shades of grey-the boardgame" Grin

MumW · 30/11/2019 11:53

Still not as bad as when my ‘friend’ made a collection of items that contain an ingredient I’m allergic too. All wrapped up and she was chortling madly like she was hilarious. The allergy is so severe that I carry an epipen. The manager took one look grabbed the whole lot and escorted her out the room. She didn’t mean it maliciously just thought it was funny. Manager tried to get her dismissed for it. Wasn’t exactly a festive afternoon after that.

Unfortunately, lots of people really don't understand allergies. Thank God your manager wasn't one of them.
With hindsight a good response would have been "quick, dial 999 is trying to kill me".

We've found a good way to get people to understand is to say "you do realise that if you deliberately/secretly give me NUTS then it is classed as assault. If I die, you could face a manslaughter charge"

I got a “hilarious” red plastic mouth. Plastic Mouth Opener Funny Lips www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075L7Q28H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3JL4DbPZ7WNEA?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 It was a relatively new and very dysfunctional team and I had spoken up in a few meetings. I thought it was someone’s way of telling me I was too gobby, which really upset me. I’m still not sure if that’s what was meant or not, or who gave it to me, but for the rest of the day quite a few people came over to commiserate and tell me that they thought it was a shit gift too!

My mum got one of those heat reactive mugs where a woman's clothes vanish. At the time she was about 60.

alexafindfilms · 06/12/2019 22:18

@awesmum did anyone stand up for you and say it wasnt fair? or apologise?

Livpool · 06/12/2019 23:07

Hand wash!

Herbalteahippie · 06/12/2019 23:22

Those gel bra fillers ‘chicken fillets’ OMG so not funny I’d just had a lump removedBrew

StormBaby · 07/12/2019 01:20

I got a sexy elf costume about 5 sizes too small. I was mortified.

Wingedharpy · 07/12/2019 01:32

My mum was given a packet of plastic cable ties.
She's elderly and has never done any DIY or gardening in her life.

Ermmmmname · 07/12/2019 01:38

A box of lemon after eights almost at their best before date. This was mainly disappointing because it was from my crush in High School, I very swiftly didn’t fancy him anymore.
A magnetic design your own vagina hair thing. From a guy I barely knew at work. Just weird. Confused Everyone else got thoughtful gifts...

GeorgiaGirl52 · 07/12/2019 01:59

A yard of fabric. No picture or pattern, just folded up fabric. I do not sew or craft and never have.

newyearoldme · 07/12/2019 02:12

A plastic bag shower cap, the nasty thin kind you get free in a hotel room.
Budget was £15.

wellthismakesnosense · 07/12/2019 02:54

Not me, but a long time ago now I was doing some casual work in a pub/restaurant over Xmas. Large group of work colleagues in for a meal, and all jovially sharing their secret Santa gifts out. As I was bringing some drinks over I noted a large cage. someone had actually been gifted a hamster, cage and all, for SS. I had to ask about it and learned it wasn’t even something they particularly wanted and no ‘in-joke’. Very random and also quite problematic having it in a restaurant for the rest of the evening! I offered to move it to a quiet, unused room for its own sake if nothing else, and at the end found myself making sure the new pet owner wasn’t too drunk to be going home and in charge of it 😂

awesmum · 07/12/2019 10:38

@alexafindfilms no nothing was said at all. It was noticed though as when my DSis said we're doing it again this year, I said thanks but I'll bow out. I did say that I didn't expect anyone to buy anything for me that people could just buy for my kids. Her response was well we do that anyway. Then she did ask - was it because of what you ended up with last year.

Arthursblanket · 07/12/2019 10:44

I once got a trainspotter's collectable mug, from someone who actually knew me, not as a joke. Oh and a head massager of the wire spider type, which 'not so secret Santa' told me gives orgasms if used on a bent knee shudder

Pinktornado · 07/12/2019 20:06

A very obviously pre-used foot spa Xmas Envy (Not envy)

A few years ago, I was 5 months pregnant. My boss picked me and got me a pack of Pampers wrapped in a bin bag with my name on a post-it note stuck on. He then apologised and said he’d forgotten and panicked and he would bring in a proper gift, he never did. It is still talked about years later!

Comps83 · 07/12/2019 20:21

A mug shaped like a turd, with the quote ‘is it just me or is everything shit’
Total dig at my obvious mental health problems
We didn’t do it this year as it was getting out of hand but last year we were putting in £10. every time it was someone’s birthday (group of 6 of us) every one else got nice gifts or a versatile gift card for somewhere good . Mine was the last birthday and I ended up with a flipping £60 Superdrug card. That specifically said on it that it couldn’t be used for perfume . Great £60 worth of toiletries for my birthday . I think it was just thoughtless and I know it has been bought last minute on the lunch hour on my bd
