Secret Santa CF

Our budget for the office SS is £10. Some people have put a wish list up on the office wall (grabby enough I think) but the person I am buying for has put 3 suggestions of quite specific things, all of which are priced at £15-£20!

AIBU to ignore her request list and just guess at something else to buy that is within budget?

I’ve searched online and they are definitely not cheaper anywhere else. One item is a shop own brand so can’t be sourced elsewhere. List price £15, even with the current Black Friday deal it’s going to be £11 plus £3 postage.

So £11 then, for a £10ish Secret Santa. I don't really think that epitomises CFery.

You don't expect them to get a lesser gift because you want to order online for your own convenience, do you?

Pixie2015 · 29/11/2019 21:11

5 boxes of cereal wrapped up would look great 👍

Vanhi · 29/11/2019 21:19

14 incl postage, so 40% over budget.

Isn't having a bit of a guess and trying to stay within budget part of the fun? If you can call it fun. Last time I did SS I got someone who did triathlons. Went into my local bike shop and told them I had £5 for secret Santa for a triathlete. The shop staff were really helpful and I came out with a load of energy bars. They were appreciated and the thing about food is there's a fair bet it won't go entirely to waste.

Definitely donation to a Charity, something like this...
www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/oxfam-unwrapped?intcmp=home-black-friday

an equally grabby person in my workplace was given one of these last year and boy were they REALLY REALLY pissed off especially when everyone else got really thoughtful pressies :)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/11/2019 21:20

Buy 10 x scratchcards

(I'd be delighted with this)

So would I!

Inebriati · 29/11/2019 21:23

I think there might be a market for a standard 'cheeky fucker' gift, for that cheeky fucker you are stuck with this Christmas.

Orangecake123 · 29/11/2019 21:23

Ignore the list.

I've gone off secret santas. My sister went all out and got nice and thoughtful gifts for the full £10.

In return she got cheap colouring pencils and £1 sweets.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 29/11/2019 21:25

It doesn’t matter what you buy it’s secret ffs

Blingismything · 29/11/2019 21:25

There is an app that you can pump everyone's name into and it generates the gifters/recipients. Each victim recipient also submits a list of gift suggestions for their gifter. Job done.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 29/11/2019 21:26

Be inclined to buy a cheap, within budget, photo booth kit.

SabineUndine · 29/11/2019 21:27

I was in Tiger the other day and really wishing I was in a Secret Santa this year cos I saw many nice things for £1. I'd go to Tiger, spend a couple of quid on something and put the rest of the money in a charity box.

Elodie2019 · 29/11/2019 21:27

Can you buy a non branded, cheaper version of something on the list? just to piss them off

LEELULUMPKIN · 29/11/2019 21:27

I only participated in this once. One packet of chocolate willies later and I was done. It wasn't even nice chocolate.

PlumsGalore · 29/11/2019 21:29

Seriously, what a crock of Shite secret Santa is! Why do we bother, why not just opt out. Waste a tenner on something that we will never ever appreciate and meanwhile the planet dies further.

Cloudyyy · 29/11/2019 21:32

Sorry, completely off topic but...

That link to Oxfam shop has completely thrown me as they seem to be having a Black Friday sale??? It’s a charity, surely the objective is to donate money, how does a sale on charity money work? They’re not even products really just tokens for donations I’m totally baffled!

MitziK · 29/11/2019 21:35

Charity donation - donating a pile of shit sounds about right.

Mainly because I was wounded by the work SS where I couldn't really afford it, but wanted to join in partly because it would be the only present I'd get that year, put my gift into the pile, only to find out at the end that the bastard who had been given my name had decided not to bother at all.

Trying not to burst into tears in the staffroom whilst all around me opened up lovely gifts, scarves, gloves, drinks, Neals Yard gift sets, etc, because some prick on £45K+ a year couldn't be fucked to pick up a five pound Bayliss and Harding gift box from Waitrose whilst getting their venison steak for tea the previous night, was not my idea of Christmas Spirit.

HarryElephante · 29/11/2019 21:37

Definitely grabby.

Definitely buy them something they don't want which will end up straight in the bin. Deffo rather add to the waste problem than buy someone something they may actually want and use.

5BlueHydrangea · 29/11/2019 21:39

We usually do £10. And buy something you would like to receive then each person pulls a random gift out.
This year however we put money on for the food bank and one of the team bought lots of stuff and dropped it off there. Gave us all a nice warm feeling and we don't have rubbish we don't want! The food bank got over £120 worth of useful stuff too. Which I think is what Christmas should be about really.

Therebythedoor · 29/11/2019 21:43

I saw an advert for that VIPoo spray suggesting it could be a SS gift! Buy a couple of those for the CF, or some Poo-Pourri!

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/11/2019 21:43

I would rather pay more and get something they want.

c75kp0r · 29/11/2019 21:44

That is such a good idea 5Blue.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/11/2019 21:47

@Mitzik

What a "See You Next Tuesday"! If people aren't prepared to contribute, they should ask not be included - that's a really shitty thing to do.

Have some Flowers

dontalltalkatonce · 29/11/2019 21:47

MUCH better idea than chocolate willies or VIPoo and indulging grabby gits because 'it's what they want'. Tenner in a card or donate a tenner to the foodbank and give them the receipt in a card. Then opt out. They're always shit. Some dickhead always buys sex gifts or really inappropriate rubbish.

PreseaCombatir · 29/11/2019 21:48

I thought you meant a wish list through an app. Ours is through a website, and you can message in secret to send a wish list to who has you, or a secret message to who has you. Not a written list on a wall 😂

Notsurehowtofixit · 29/11/2019 21:48

I would ignore the list anyway, even if it was under 10. Takes all the joy out
