to think most people would understand who Pinnocchio is despite Boris Johnson's dad saying they wouldn't

Maybe they can't spell the name.
But they know the idea. A liar.

His dad is upset his son, who has been sacked for lying before, is being called Pinocchio. He claims the British public don't have the literacy to understand it.

Unfortunately you've spelt it wrong yourself, proving his point!🤣 (He said they couldn't spell it)

But in all seriousness, you are absolutely right, everyone would get the reference, whether or not they knew how to spell it, and Stanley Johnson is a patronising, arrogant man who demonstrates his contempt for those of us he considers beneath him.

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 30/11/2019 07:13

OMG..he comes across as such an elitist. What an arrogant man.

SteelRiver · 30/11/2019 07:23

He just epitomises the elite, entitled class who think they are born to rule over us. I'm sure he would have liked to call us all plebs, but had to say it in a roundabout way.

BambooBoobam · 30/11/2019 07:24

Saw this on fb lol

chomalungma · 30/11/2019 07:46

There is a difference between knowing the story and being able to spell Pinocchio. I realised that I had spelt it wrong when I pressed the button.

But I know exactly what the Pinocchio reference means - as I am sure most people in the UK does.

Well my 6 and 4 year olds know who Pinocchio is, we read the book recently.

Hoppinggreen · 30/11/2019 07:52

Ale hasn’t fallen far from the tree has it?

PonderTweek · 30/11/2019 07:52

It's also a famous Disney film. Grin I knew who Pinocchio is and how to spell it when I was like 6. The guy is such a dick, and probably not that clever if he goes on air to say things like that right before an election (or ever).

Scarydinosaurs · 30/11/2019 07:53

My six year old knows.

‘If I said ‘oh that boy is a bit of a Pinocchio’ what would I mean?’

‘That he is lying a lot’

I think we’re all good on the literacy front, thanks, Stan. You dick.

AppleKatie · 30/11/2019 07:55

It’s hardly an obscure literary reference is it? Batshit man. Perhaps he doesn’t want his son elected?

megletthesecond · 30/11/2019 08:00

13yrs DS knows who Pinocchio is and that he lied a lot. Looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked him if he knew who he was.
We're a feckless lone parent family living on a crappy estate as well Wink.

chomalungma · 30/11/2019 08:10

The Washington Post keeps track of Trump and his lies.

They call it The Bottomless Pinocchio

ppwww.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/12/10/meet-bottomless-pinocchio-new-rating-false-claim-repeated-over-over-again/]]

That dubious distinction will be awarded to politicians who repeat a false claim so many times that they are, in effect, engaging in campaigns of disinformation.

Trump has won it - but I think Johnson is getting there.

He's just a boorish fool with too much confidence and not enough sense to shut up.

Obviously you can see where BJ's arrogance comes from.

Packit · 30/11/2019 08:32

The man is a total Dickhead, just like his son.

AppleKatie · 30/11/2019 08:43

Me to my DC (5) -
Do you know about Pinocchio?
‘A Pinocchio tells lies and his nose grows like this’

Well either I’m a fantastic literary parent or SJ is an idiot...

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 30/11/2019 08:45

Does the man not know that it's a Disney film?

chomalungma · 30/11/2019 08:47

I wonder if the Johnson family ever have a big family Christmas?

What must the conversations be like?

OP posts:
Ohyesiam · 30/11/2019 08:49

Confidence is such an overrated virtue.

catwithnohat · 30/11/2019 08:51

Given the number of people who vote Tory maybe he's got a point (not necessarily about the literacy but the general thinking)

JolieOBrien · 30/11/2019 08:52

My children loved the Disney film Pinocchio so did I

Emmapeeler1 · 30/11/2019 08:56

It’s doesn’t matter whether people can spell it! It’s pretty clear what it means. BJ and SJ both have complete contempt for the British public, and that is also pretty clear.

The other siblings seem nicer people, I have to say. I like RJ.

Mrsemcgregor · 30/11/2019 08:57

I know how to spell it and have done since I was 6 because of the children’s tv program of the same name. The theme song sung the spelling .......

P-I-N-O-double C-H-I-O it’s Pinocchio

Good times.

Stick that in your pipe Stan.

Elbeagle · 30/11/2019 08:58

Mrsemcgregor that’s how I remember it too Grin
