To ask what age you would let Dc travel alone on train?

DC is used to travelling on trains. It would a be a 25 minute trip end station to end station. I would put on train, MIL at other end to meet.

14? since they are being met
even 12? I guess

EleanorReally · 29/11/2019 07:10

what age are you talking about?

AaandBreathe · 29/11/2019 07:11

That's what I'm asking! What age would you consider it ok?

Year 7 for mine, necessary to get to school

NearlyGranny · 29/11/2019 07:12

Depends if you're in an area where "county lines" is a thing.

EleanorReally · 29/11/2019 07:12

well what age is your dc in question? or is this purely hypothetical?

Els1e · 29/11/2019 07:14

Mine was 13. If sensible child, I would say 11.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 29/11/2019 07:14

Mine wouldn't have managed it in yr 7, although presumably if its school there's a group of them.

Im imagining 13 here but we've not go there yet to see!

Im also wondering about leaving home alone afterschool as the childcare seems to stop by secondary !

JacquesHammer · 29/11/2019 07:14

DD has been doing it since year 7. 14 mile trip to get to school.

There are, of course, a group of them who do it but she does on occasion do it alone quite happily.

whatthehelldowecare · 29/11/2019 07:15

A lot of kids in my area get the train to town for the private school, seen a tiiiny little girl (maybe 11/12?) the other day waiting on the platform clutching a travel mask full of tea with a calculator sticking out her blazer pocket, she looked like a wee miniature business woman

Apolloanddaphne · 29/11/2019 07:15

Depends how sensible they are. Maybe around 12?

champagneandfromage50 · 29/11/2019 07:15

My DS takes two trains to school and he was 11

Bluerussian · 29/11/2019 07:16

Mine did two stops on the train from about eleven, nearly twelve. Not all the time because sometimes his dad was able to drop him off and pick him up. I did the train journey with him at first but there were others who were also on it and it was only two stops.

altiara · 29/11/2019 07:17

Age 12, DD went to a concert with SIL and cousins, but they were going somewhere the next day so she got the train home (hour journey) and I collected her at the station.

AuntieStella · 29/11/2019 07:17

Certainly once at secondary school

And as it's such an easy sounding route, with drop off and pick up arranged, then you could go a couple of years younger (especially if the DC is going to/from school all be)

Jimdandy · 29/11/2019 07:17

From year 7 mine will have to use public transport for school and be alone after school no childcare where I am for secondary

Loveislandaddict · 29/11/2019 07:20

Definantly aged 11 onwards - dc did it for school.

In the scenario above, then maybe younger if dc was happy. If only 25 minutes, could one of you do the return trip?

BillHadersNewWife · 29/11/2019 07:20

About 11.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 29/11/2019 07:21

A lot of kids are doing it at 11 to get to school. I wouldn’t do it younger than that.

SnuggyBuggy · 29/11/2019 07:27

Probably secondary school age. I'd maybe feel a bit different if they had to change trains. I assume they would have a phone in case the train was delayed and that the person at the other end was able to look up details of the train online

AaandBreathe · 29/11/2019 07:34

He would be 10 for the first few times going alone, then 11. The first 4 times, MIL would do the whole trip with him. I have a younger DC who needs to be somewhere else, would be inconvenient and expensive to do the trip there and straight return but not impossible. Wasn't sure if I was being irresponsible to consider it!

Mine was 10 the first few times. Started at an indy in Y6 which required 2 stops in the train and then a bus to get there. Change was at a busy outer London commuter station. He was fine.

Frazzled2207 · 29/11/2019 07:43

Depends on the kid but I think secondary school age. When I was 12 I took a flight by myself unaccompanied and at 13 a train all the way from crewe to Norwich which took forever. If he's being put on the train and someone is collecting him the other end and is generally quite streetwise and happy to do it it's fine.

Frazzled2207 · 29/11/2019 07:45

Just read update- assume he's year 6. Still think it's fine as long as he is happy and trustworthy and knows the set up.

SnuggyBuggy · 29/11/2019 07:49

Sounds fine to me
