DD wants one of these carriages she has seen on YouTube, they cost £1200!! DD is 5 and she fully believes in Santa. How on earth do I distract her from wanting this or manage her expectations???

Do you actually have space for it? You could tell her that Santa won’t bring things that mummy doesn’t have room for or Santa doesn’t bring gifts that mummy isn’t comfortable about (he calls mummy to check If the gifts are ok)etc...

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 22:20

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland
"OP. Those American clips are just product placement/paid promotional videos to make kids want to buy this stuff. It is an ad.

Stick to CBeebies. Youtube is full of rubbish. BBC is funded by license fee, anything else you watch that you arent handing money over for will have advertising in some form. If you cant see it on first glance look closer."

I know you weren't implying I was neglectful, others were. I know it's all marketing, it's just never had such an effect GrinWhat I though pp meant was a traditional advert like the ones on regular YouTube.

"Oh I don't think Santa has the room to bring you that". Or "I don't think Santa goes for gifts like that!" Grin

Definitely no space for it, and once in my back garden I'd never get it out again so we could never really take it anywhere!

Mine never really did a list it was mostly surprise and if they did do lists, egged on at school then I would try and find one or two things on it.
. He can't bring every single thing, every child in the street has requests.. Some ask for horses... Can they fit a horse in??

Luckily mine have always been great full with whatever they have. Lots of surprises...

No counting or comparing... But they have no same aged cousins or wider family to compare too either.

spacepyramid · 28/11/2019 22:26

It would cost Father Xmas too much to make it as he has to pay for the materials that he uses to make the toys, if he made those he'd not be able to make presents for all of the children so some would go without.

Or just tell her that it's not the kind of thing that Father Xmas brings, they don't have to get everything on their list.

Cremebrule · 28/11/2019 22:26

I could deal with a princess carriage request. I think there are alternatives you can work with. My 3 year old has this year requested for Santa to help her get better at wiping her bottom after she’s pooed. Oh and a real princess ( not a toy one). That doesn’t give me a lot to go on.

Frenchw1fe · 28/11/2019 22:27

My dd always wanted a proper gypsy caravan. She’s 28 now and I’m pretty sure she never even thinks about it but I do, every time I see a picture of one. I think they’re about £20000.
So I get where you’re coming from, we all want our dc to have a magical time at Xmas.

spacepyramid · 28/11/2019 22:28

Cremebrulee Grin
I'm sure you can find a life size cardboard Duchess of Sussex /Cambridge somewhere if you look hard enough - good luck!

BooHaa · 28/11/2019 22:29

@Cremebrule

Grin Can't help with the bum wiping (how cute!) but you could hire a professional princess to come and play for an hour one day. Good luck Grin

good luck with that!

CyclesPerfecta · 28/11/2019 22:31

You don’t need to make excuses on behalf of Santa. If she’s really disappointed that she didn’t get it, just pretend to be wondering why it is that Santa didn’t bring it. You might be surprised to hear what she’ll come up with.

Woked a treat with my now 7 year old. She’s still hoping to find an electric car under the tree 😀

perfectstorm · 28/11/2019 22:32

I tell mine that Santa has to get presents for all the children and they all need to be sensible about what they get or there won't be enough to go around. They accepted that. It's not a bad life lesson anyway, really.

I love your DD. Grin

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 22:33

Trebla
who said you are the only one? You sound like one of these judgemental people who use reusable nappies, grow a few tomatoes in their gardens BUT have 4 kids, have travelled across the globe and pretend they are righteous Hmm
Do your bit by all means, but don't pretend you are better than anyone else and feel entitled to look down at the rest of us - who might be doing a lot better than you actually.

whattodo2019 · 28/11/2019 22:34

You tell her straight!!!
That's far too expensive....
set her a budget

Stabbitha · 28/11/2019 22:38

My 6yr old has her little heart set on getting a Falabella from Santa.

We live in a council house with a 10ft square paved yard.

I told her Santa doesn't do live animals as it's too distracting for the reindeer.

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2019 22:39

I have never been able to understand parents who get their children to believe that all their Christmas presents come from Father Christmas.

In our families the stocking came from Father Christmas and the big prresents came from real people.

Just tell her you can't afford it. Simple.

WeMarchOn · 28/11/2019 22:42

My favourite is oh they only sell them in America not here 🤣

Drabarni · 28/11/2019 22:44

FC couldn't afford to buy all the children one of these. He has to choose something less expensive so all the kids can have something.

It worked for us with all 3 dc. Grin

joystir59 · 28/11/2019 22:45

You manage her expectations by telling her she cannot have it and cannot demand anything specific as a gift. The magic of Christmas is waiting to see/appreciating what Santa will bring, not presenting parents with an effing list.

joystir59 · 28/11/2019 22:47

So as far as I'm concerned your darling child has already been spoilt beyond the magic and wonderment of Christmas.

ElphiasDoge · 28/11/2019 22:47

The Hobbycraft one is reduced at the moment.

One of my most memorable Christmas presents was they year I asked for a dolls house. Santa wrote to me in my stocking and said he was terribly sorry but so many little girls wanted dolls houses that year and the elves just couldn’t make them all. Then downstairs under the tree was a gift for Dad. Santa never left gifts for Dad before. Inside was a book on how to make dolls houses and my dad over the next few months made me a dolls house. Could you do something similar with any of the above excuses? Can’t do electronics/no space, has to be flat packed?

CustomerCervixDepartment · 28/11/2019 22:47

Santa brings the stocking that appears on their bed in the middle of the night. That’s all.

Consumer products do not make December ‘magical’ and no kid will rememberers last years tat that’s still being paid off, so put no thought or guilt into it. ‘The magic’ is just a kid anticipating spending time with their parents for a week and playing with stocking fillers.

TheGirlWhoLived · 28/11/2019 22:48

Well I’m more stuck with dd (ages 9 that actually does still believe)

Wants 12 freshly baked cookies and
Emma Watson

That’s all her list contains 😒
