Grey hair!!

I am early 40’s. I’ve always had a bit of grey, and always had my hair coloured fairly regularly, on the basis that it’s not too noticeable (some people rock grey hair, but it’s not my personal choice).

Today, I had a blow dry for an event. And the hairdresser has parted it on the other side. Which looked nice until I got in a lift with a mirrored ceiling and realised that IT’S PRACTICALLY FUCKING WHITE.

So, AIBU to ask if you have much grey When did you go noticeably grey? Is early 40’s really early?? Why does the texture of the sodding grey hairs have to become so much less silky and more wiry?

Please can we have some photos if people are happy to post them?

I am contemplating stopping colouring my hair but keep wavering... 😉

Skyejuly · 28/11/2019 22:43

Mines getting greyer by the day and I'm 32.

DBML · 28/11/2019 22:45

Started going grey early 30’s. My hair is nearly black though, so it shows.

mokeymokey · 28/11/2019 22:46

I'm in my mid 40s and love the sprinkling of grey that I have. Grey hair doesn't bother me at all.

HomeEdRocks18 · 28/11/2019 23:24

I started getting white hairs at 19 once I was pregnant. I have now stopped dying my hair as I was tired of the quick regrowth every six weeks or so.
I now have about 5 inches of white hair and the rest is auburn.

Powergower · 29/11/2019 06:24

I'm at the stage where I should stop dyeing or start to go lighter and eventually blonde so the greys don't show. Went grey early following pregnancies. Absolutely hate them and not ready to go grey. Even when my roots start showing it ages me so so much.

User1483098432 · 29/11/2019 10:58

My husband has been going grey since he was in his early 20s. And my best friend at school was going grey by 16. If you don't like it you could dye it. But I'm sure you would look just as lovely leaving it natural

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 29/11/2019 11:08

I'm 41 and only have a smattering of grey hair in my mid brown hair. I think it looks entirely brown to other people. My mum still had red hair into her late sixies so perhaps I take after her.

Pilotage1302 · 29/11/2019 11:18

I am somewhat older than you and had my first white hair aged 15, but was under a lot of "stress" at the time. Once this lifted the white hair disappeared. I still only have the odd one or two, no clumps, but attribute this to my genes. You would be hard pressed to guess my age from the colour of my hair.
Some people go grey early, others later and a few hardly at all.
My younger sister, on the other hand, is now almost completely white at age 55.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 29/11/2019 11:23

I started going grey at 16. It's genetic, my mum was greying at 14.

At 19 on a field trip while I was collecting soil samples a fellow student looked down at me and said 'my god, your hair's really grey' so it was definitely noticeable at that age.

By my early 20s I had developed a stupid white streak up the middle, so dyed my hair until I was in my mid 30s when the sides had also mostly turned when I grew it out and have been unashamedly grey ever since.

40 is not young at all for grey hair, though whether or not you choose to dye may depend on the pattern of the greyness as it did for me.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 29/11/2019 11:28

Hah! Wait til you find your first grey pube...

Oddly enough despite my head hair going grey from my teens at 45 I have yet to find a single grey body hair and my eyebrows remain resolutely black. I have the white hair/black eyebrows Alistair Darling thing going on, as does my nearly 73 year old mum.

Go figure.

SunshineAngel · 29/11/2019 11:37

Young grey runs in my family. My brother was 14 when he started going grey, and is almost completely grey at 24 now.

I found a grey hair when I was 18 and was horrified. Didn't get many until mid 20s and now I'm 29 I have considerable greys. Really want to dye it but I'm rubbish at doing it myself and can't afford to have it done professionally.

Luckily I'm blonde so I don't think people can really tell. I only know because I know, if that makes sense. I still absolutely hate it though.

I lost a lot of weight and got into good shape a couple of years ago after being told I was dangerously obese, and then this happens, and I feel like I've been robbed of the chance to be truly attractive. Can't explain why I think like that, but there it is.

cocorico42 · 29/11/2019 11:43

I stopped dyeing my hair three months ago. My hair is about 15% grey and I am 42. I opted to do this partially because the dye made my scalp itch and potential issues with allergies concerned me, also I really don't want to have the two tone white/dark brown grow out which will inevitably happen.

I switch between being confident with my decision and then completely hating it.

However I have decided to give it 6 months and see how I feel then.

Dowser · 29/11/2019 11:47

My cousin who is 8 years younger than me has been grey for about 6 years..making her about 53 at the time
She started getting blonde streaks in it about two years ago ..and it looks almosT all blonde now.
I’m 67 still got a lot of brown and quite a lot of grey at the front
I’ve been having blonde streaks for about 4 decades now
Can’t see me stopping anytime soon

Whosamawotsits · 29/11/2019 21:05

28 here and at my hair is at least 40% grey. Been greying since I was 19 and ironically am allergic to hair dye! Ill be white before 40 Gin

MsMellivora · 29/11/2019 21:14

Started in my mid thirties, had a colour at the hairdressers every four weeks till I was 48. I suddenly became allergic to hair dye not the worst worst reaction but a reaction nonetheless. Doctor said it was probably hormonal changes due to menopause. Hair is in amazingly good condition now it’s not been dyed for four years. Am about 70% silver and the rest very dark brown almost black, will be glad when it’s all silver.

Pipandmum · 29/11/2019 21:17

Started going grey in my late teens. I've been dying it since then. I'd probably have been totally grey mid 30s.

ThinkingNotTalking · 29/11/2019 21:24

I’m 40 and only a few strands so far! But I have friends who have been totally grey since 30, so I don’t think you are greying early tbh.

ShinyGiratina · 29/11/2019 21:31

DH had a grey tuft and a peppering before 30. There's not much dark left in his late 40s. I thought he was quite silvery when we married, but it's definitely accelerated since then.

I've got a few rogues in my late 30s. Not enough for considering dyeing them. On the school run there are a good number of mums either dyeing them (and occasional rootage) or embracing the inevitable in their late 30s, early 40s.

I can't tell whether DS's streak is ash blonde or has some greys mixed in. He's only in junior school! With DH going so early it could have some grey mixed in!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 29/11/2019 21:37

I'm late 30's and I've got grey hair on both sides of my head. The top layer of my hair hides it.

StCharlotte · 29/11/2019 21:41

none of my friends seem to be going grey

Oh I bet they are!

First greys at 23. Stopped dyeing late 30s when I started reacting to the due. Now mid 50s I look like a natural blonde which is very weird. I would love to dye again as I miss having darker hair and am seriously pissed off at being offered senior rates although I could save some money I suppose.

StCharlotte · 29/11/2019 21:42

(Mine is like the picture upthread)

BentNeckLady · 29/11/2019 21:45

I’m very almost 40 and only have a couple of grey hairs but I think that’s unusual and the majority of people have a lot of grey hair at this age.

mamakoukla · 29/11/2019 21:49

I love that hair can be dyed but could not tolerate the sight of any regrowth. Drove me potty. Let my natural hair colour grow in after a decade of dying hair. Softer than ever - have ditched hair styling products bar a tiny bit of oil and it’s surprisingly looking reasonable. The upshot is I rarely use conditioner; the hair products had made this a necessity. Just Head & Shoulders.

GrannyBags · 29/11/2019 22:01

I have naturally dark brown hair so the greys showed up far too much. I started having highlights and am now full on blonde. I love it and I’m never going back!
