Grey hair!!

I am early 40’s. I’ve always had a bit of grey, and always had my hair coloured fairly regularly, on the basis that it’s not too noticeable (some people rock grey hair, but it’s not my personal choice).

Today, I had a blow dry for an event. And the hairdresser has parted it on the other side. Which looked nice until I got in a lift with a mirrored ceiling and realised that IT’S PRACTICALLY FUCKING WHITE.

So, AIBU to ask if you have much grey When did you go noticeably grey? Is early 40’s really early?? Why does the texture of the sodding grey hairs have to become so much less silky and more wiry?

Hah! Wait til you find your first grey pube...

yuk Not Envy obviously

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 17:48

40 is quite average. It's less noticeable as less and less men and women embrace the grey - even if it's fashionable at the moment

Yes, some women are beautiful
I don't look good with grey hair, I just look older and more tired - so I embrace the luxury of hair colouring!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 28/11/2019 17:55

I am 48 and gutted to find grey hairs have started to appear

I know that it's time...

Jasmin82 · 28/11/2019 18:31

I noticed I was starting to go grey at 16. Spent many years colouring my hair. December 2012 (I was 30) shaved head for charity. This was when I discovered that I was completely grey as it started to grow back. Continued to colour hair until August 2018. Gave up with the colouring and embraced my grey hair.

GreySheep · 28/11/2019 18:34

I’m 46 and not a single grey hair yet.

I’m slightly worried they’ll all kick in suddenly at once.

areyouafraidofthedark · 28/11/2019 18:35

I started going grey at 30 after my last pregnancy and now four years later I am definitely getting more I've noticed when my roots are starting to show. I colour my hair to cover them up.

ThebishopofBanterbury · 28/11/2019 18:50

Early 40s is not early, I have known quite a few people to grow grey in their 20s.

Lemonyfuckit · 28/11/2019 19:04

I'm 37 and have way more grey hairs sprouting around temples / parting etc than I would like. Up until about 6 months ago was trying to pull them out, then realised that was a losing battle, so got the hairdresser to put a semi permanent on. Was never happy with the colour she did, horrified by the cost, and felt like it was fading and the greys showing through every 6 weeks or so. So now have taken the plunge and started experimenting with henna, which I'm thrilled with. Covers my greys, restores my original (naturally red) hair colour which had noticeably dulled / got more chestnut browny, and costs me about £5 a go! Also seems to condition my hair really nicely, but as it has brightened my colour and made it distinctly more gingery red am noticing need to redo roots every 6 weeks or so.

Mummadeeze · 28/11/2019 19:09

I am 45 and have a few white hairs on top which I dye but a few years ago I suddenly got loads downstairs. I was totally dismayed! Don’t know why but they bother me much less on my head even though they are more visible.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 28/11/2019 19:17

I am in my middle 50s and just decided to embrace the grey as I was fed up with having to keep,on top dyeing the roots.
I have have a lot of grey coming through now and look a bit skunk like as the darker colour grows out but am hoping that I eventually end up with a lovely silver grey.
I have also switched to a purple shampoo so hopefully I won’t get that horrible yellow ting as the grey grows in.

tinselvestsparklepants · 28/11/2019 19:18

I caught sight of myself in the mirror this morning and marvelled at my whiteys, glinting in the sun. Basically I have my own personal tinsel Smile

Cocolapew · 28/11/2019 19:20

I started going grey in my 30's. I stopped dyeing it this year and now am completely dye free at 51. My hair is lovely and soft, not a hint of wiry.

NaturalHighlights · 28/11/2019 19:40

Personal tinsel 😂😂

Im 45 and have always had dark brown hair....my grey is coming through with a vengeance and i would say im at least 50%....I envy my blonde friends as it doesnt look as noticeable on them.

scaryteacher · 28/11/2019 19:53

I bit the bullet earlier last year and went grey. I knew dh was retiring and €175 a time for roots and colours would no longer be affordable, so, I had it dyed my natural colour, grey highlights throughout, and then I let it grow out, as what came through thereafter would be natural.

It's now a nice mix of pure white and some grey, and dh says I look distinguished. I wish I'd done it years ago, I could have saved a fortune. My hairdresser was unconvinced until he cut and dried it, and he said it was great and suited my skin tone much better.

letsdolunch321 · 28/11/2019 21:02

I first noticed a grey streak from 17yrs old, now aged 53 I am 100%
grey/white

maddening · 28/11/2019 21:17

I am very lucky as am 42 and have had 1 grey hair but I haven't been able to find it for a while so it may have fallen out.

However I struggle weight wise, can't lose weight without ridiculous dieting and exercise and put it on so so easily it is untrue, I would rather have grey hair that I can dye, you can't fake thin 🤣😂

ClinkyMonkey · 28/11/2019 21:45

I started finding grey hairs in my late teens. By the time I was 30, there were too many to count. At 52, I haven't let it grow out for long enough to assess the extent of the grey, but imagine it's pretty much all of it. My hair was originally black, but I colour it sludge mid brown now. I've been using a non permanent colour for a few months now, promising myself I'll get off the hamster wheel and go grey!

Hippywannabe · 28/11/2019 22:02

I am 5t and in my 11th week since ditching the dye. My new hair is whiter than that of my 79 year old mother. The growth rate seems to be slowing down which worries me as in my head,I was thinking it would be all done by Whitsun.

Hippywannabe · 28/11/2019 22:03

55 not 5t

mumtomaxwell · 28/11/2019 22:18

I’m 42 and have more white hair than my mum! Stopped dyeing it dark brown earlier this year... started going grey at age 19.

I get loads of complements about my silvery white hair!

CMOTDibbler · 28/11/2019 22:23

Not early at all. I stopped colouring my hair when I was 38 as it was so high maintenance due to my white hair. I have beautiful silver, long, silky hair now and get loads of compliments

k1233 · 28/11/2019 22:28

If I was transitioning to grey, I'd go something like this - pic from YouTube video. There's heaps of videos on YouTube. For some reason I like watching hair videos LOL

Grey hair!!
