I’ve been meaning to post this all week, I got a text from my dc’s school on Monday saying that due to the electricity board doing work on Monday 2nd dec the school will have no electricity and therefore will be closed. AIBU to think that it’s a tad ridiculous and. They could have just done the work over the bloody weekend!!??

It isn't down to the school surely?

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 28/11/2019 12:19

That's the day the electricity board has scheduled it. Not much the school can do really. Possibly workers over the weekend are on emergency rates so won't be doing scheduled stuff.

BeanBag7 · 28/11/2019 12:20

I'm assuming the electricity board has decided this, not the school. They probably dont work on weekends. Or perhaps they were booked up over the weekend. It's not ideal but it's obviously important or they would have waited until the holidays.

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 12:20

I know it’s not down to the school but surely the electricity board could take it into consideration that it will cause problems for a whole load of parents!!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 28/11/2019 12:20

How do you know there was anyone from the electricity board available to do the work on a weekend?

HairyFloppins · 28/11/2019 12:21

It's probably unavoidable I'm afraid.

youngestisapsycho · 28/11/2019 12:21

My DDs school is closed on Monday for an 'occassional day'
I think that means xmas shopping for teachers?!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/11/2019 12:22

I expect that the electricity board either doesn't do work at the weekend unless it is an emergency, or if there is a bill to pay, it will be bigger as 'out of hours' and the school can't/doesn't want to pay the higher bill.

A week is short notice, but the work must be necessarily and fairly urgent, or else they might be able to do it over the school holidays.

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 12:22

Surely they could just pay their workers overtime to do it at the weekend though!?

OP posts:
Drabarni · 28/11/2019 12:23

Parents aren't taken into consideration for these things, why should they be?
I think it's only emergencies at the weekend, so they can probably only do it during the week.

spacepyramid · 28/11/2019 12:24

If the electricity company are cutting off all power to the road then the school will have no choice, they won't be allowed to open. We had this not so long ago - a letter arrived informing us that there would be no power to our road in 3 days time and we just had to put up with it.

ballsdeep · 28/11/2019 12:25

No worse than a snow day!

BarrenFieldofFucks · 28/11/2019 12:26

Why would parents factor in the decision making of an electricity board? I get it is a pain in the arse, but that's life sometimes.

Drabarni · 28/11/2019 12:26

Would you like to be told you have to work overtime, whether you want to or not?
What is your problem with school closures, it happens for all sorts of things.
It will be teachers xmas shopping day as well soon.

monkeysox · 28/11/2019 12:26

Electricity board will not foot the bill for extra pay just to help the school out. It does not work like this

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 12:28

Well I wouldn’t mind working if I’m getting double pay to be honest 🤣
I just thought it could be done at the weekend of it was such an “emergency”

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 28/11/2019 12:29

Monday is our teachers Christmas shopping day off. Unfortunately they have to travel to a shopping centre far, far away as the local one will consist of 98% students Grin

lilypainter · 28/11/2019 12:29

I expect the electricity board’s top concern isn’t the inconvenience caused to parents. Or other people who have the electricity temporarily cut off to their businesses / homes at awkward times.

Yes, they probably could pay their workers overtime and have them do it at the weekend.
But then it would (a) cost the electricity board more money to do the work; and (b) leave the electricity board with less capacity to deal quickly with emergency situations that genuinely can’t wait until Monday.

mcmen05 · 28/11/2019 12:30

I had same with my ds school. he was off yesterday. Lucky Wednesday is my day off but I had planned to do his santa shopping so that put off now to next week.
I was thinking what did kids do at school before electricity they managed no word of health and safety back then
They don't run teachers by electric probably will have robots eventually.

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 12:30

its Quite a bit of upheaval at a weeks notice though... anyway I suppose it has to be done.

OP posts:
GreenTulips · 28/11/2019 12:31

Well if it’s vital it’s better the electrics are safe

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 12:33

And where are these teachers getting Christmas shopping days?

OP posts:
frasersmummy · 28/11/2019 12:35

MadameButterface · 28/11/2019 12:35

“ I was thinking what did kids do at school before electricity they managed no word of health and safety back then ”

They silently copied latin declensions out by candlelight in the freezing cold and got the cane if they did it wrong. Yeah we should totally bring those days back. GENERATION SNOWFLAKE
