I’ve been meaning to post this all week, I got a text from my dc’s school on Monday saying that due to the electricity board doing work on Monday 2nd dec the school will have no electricity and therefore will be closed. AIBU to think that it’s a tad ridiculous and. They could have just done the work over the bloody weekend!!??

also, just so you know there is no such thing a The Electricity Board these days.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/11/2019 12:57

Our school is closed on Monday too for an ‘occasional day’ which I believe is for Christmas shopping

Schoolclosure · 28/11/2019 13:02

@soupforbrains I’m not in the Uk and our electricity network supply company is still a state owned monopoly called “THE ESB” -Electricity Supply Board!!

Its a pain in the arse but am sure they would only do it if they had to, would you prefer that they didnt so the work, there was then a problem and the school was shut for a week because they had postponed the work? Im sure you would also start complaining if your bills increased to accomodate the double time, cant have it both ways

IceCreamFace · 28/11/2019 13:04

schools close for teachers xmas shopping days .. please tell me this is not really a thing..

Of course that's not really a thing. That is 100% made up.

JemSynergy · 28/11/2019 13:06

Our school is closed tomorrow - just in time for Back Friday. Wink

Our school is closed tomorrow - just in time for Black Friday. Wink

For clarity the way these things work is that a fault is detected through either complaints/reports or system monitoring. the fault will be located and investigated so see if it needs immediate remedial works. If the repair work requires the closure of footpaths, roads, public service or access to private land theagreement has to be gained from the local council and/or landowner. HOWEVER if the works are considered essential and urgent then the electricity company has a right to access any infrastructure to carry out necessary repairs.

Timing will be considered to a) make the repairs as soon as possible and ensure the safety of people b) minimise inconvenience to the public, neighbours or local community and c) coordinate with any necessary road closures or circuit shut-downs on the electrical infrastructure.

It is very very rare for our teams to not work through the weekend on repair jobs.

IceCream

I can assure you I'm not lying, nor are the other posters, why should we.
Unless it's an in joke with all the schools in the area and they just say "closed for teachers shopping" or "shopping day" for the laugh and usual complaints.

soupforbrains · 28/11/2019 13:09

oh well if you're not in the UK then it's pretty much pointless any of us commenting as all the rules, regulations and systems for both the electrical companies and the schools will be completely different.

I still very much doubt the electrical company whether state owned or not, will simply have chosen to do the works on that day arbitrarily.

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/11/2019 13:10

Our school is closed on Monday but we are training all day. Not for shopping.

Is this works at the school or the local area? If it is effecting other places then it’s more likely to be better for householders for it to be in the week.

Saltdoughmuncher · 28/11/2019 13:11

I’ve worked in 2 schools where we have got “Christmas shopping days”. It’s actually down in the calendar as an INSET day and the staff have to make the time up by doing twilight training in the evenings to get the day off.

Foodtheif · 28/11/2019 13:11

I would love to have an unexpected school day off. My kids are shattered at the moment. They could do with a lay in 😂 and a chilled out day.

popcorndiva · 28/11/2019 13:11

Dh's school is off tomorrow for a shopping day. Though he is doing no shopping as I have done it all. I think it's more a wellness day for all the staff and now seems to be a bit of a tradition

DowntownAbby · 28/11/2019 13:17

@Schoolclosure

I just thought it could be done at the weekend of it was such an “emergency”

What if it wasn't an emergency?

When would you expect them to do it in that case?

SerendipityJane · 28/11/2019 13:21

Surely they could just pay their workers overtime to do it at the weekend though!?

Only if their customers are willing to pay for it. Which I suspect they're not. Welcome to life on the cheap ....

DowntownAbby · 28/11/2019 13:22

I think it's more a wellness day for all the staff

7 weeks of the last 18 on holiday and about to head into another 2-week holiday and there's a 'wellness day'.

The mind fucking boggles. Confused

Letseatgrandma · 28/11/2019 13:27

as if teachers think they are somehow 'better' in someway than childcare workers

Hmm
FrostythefeckinSnowman · 28/11/2019 13:28

@Schoolclosure
Yup, ESB works meant our school closed the Monday immediately after half term. Everyone received a text on Saturday pm, 2 days before, so even less notice!

But I won’t knock them. We had a power cut a couple of weeks ago on a Tuesday evening and 2 hours later, an ESB youngster was shimmying up the nearest pole and fixed the problem. He had to scramble up the ditch through brambles to get to it too. Well impressive service!

mumwon · 28/11/2019 13:32

(thinks - as new grandma Grin - what I have to look forward to - " help Dm! dc school have a sudden day off! - dc is ill & cant go to school/nursery/cm" - :) )

notthemum · 28/11/2019 13:33

I used to work in a couple of schools. School didn't shut but I did get a shopping days off for Christmas. Had to work it round with other staff.

notthemum · 28/11/2019 13:39

Wasn't classed as inset days and didn't have to work any extra time to cover them

PhilCornwall1 · 28/11/2019 13:44

Surely they could just pay their workers overtime to do it at the weekend though!?

They could, but they won't. All decent businesses exist to make a profit and paying for weekend work when they don't need to, impacts the bottom line.

Frenchw1fe · 28/11/2019 13:45

My dc school used to have a Xmas shopping day. No idea if they still do.

Dandelion1993 · 28/11/2019 13:45

Schools don't care that when they do this, we have to run around sorting childcare.

It is a pita OP and as the electricity board know it's a school. They could have done things after hours and so on.
