To not want colleague to copy me

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 27/11/2019 10:36

Husband recently bought me a pair of lovely unusual earrings for my birthday. Think designer, not high street. My work colleague was admiring them yesterday and asked me to drop a hint to her husband so that he could buy her the same ones for Christmas. AIBU in not wanting her to copy? We socialise a lot together outside of work with clients, so there's a good chance we'd be wearing them at the same time. I think I might have to simply forget to mention it to him.

Ok for clarity everyone, I told her the designer. But she wanted the EXACT SAME EARRINGS and wanted my to send a link to said earrings to her husband.

Well she’s only unreasonable in asking you to send a link to her DH. That’s just lazy. She can buy her own earrings Grin

Trebla · 28/11/2019 07:02

Maybe she was just being nice and it was her way of complimenting you on them

Firsttimemomma · 28/11/2019 07:09

It wouldn't be very unique unless it's bespoke, and I'm sure others have access to buying these earing if they wish? It's such a small accessory so shouldn't be an issue, if she really likes them she'll hunt it down regardless.

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2019 07:10

It strikes me that English is the one with low self esteem here.

PurpleDaisies · 28/11/2019 07:14

What do these earrings look like?

ScreamingValenta · 28/11/2019 07:21

I honestly wouldn't have cared at all had my sister ended up with the same engagement ring as I have.

Nor would I. My sister isn't married, but if she ever gets married she's welcome to my wedding dress too!

Soontobe60 · 28/11/2019 07:28

Don't we all buy things that we have seen either advertised on TV, in a shop amongst 10 of the same garment on the rail or seennsomeone else wearing?
Isn't that the whole point of advertising? To make you want to buy the product? So does everyone who buys something that they have seen elsewhere have low self esteem? Get a grip!

Unique = one of a kind
Almost unique is an oxymoron. It doesn't exist.

If someone asks me where I got something, I'd tell them. No matter what it was or who they were. It is, indeed, a form of flattery.

OP, if you're so precious about not wanting to be seen at the same event as her, in matching earrings, then choose another pair to wear at those events. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Besidesthepoint · 28/11/2019 07:57

Give her the name of a similar but different designer, tell her you can't find it on the website and let her crack on. Inform your husband of course. If you do get found out somehow then guess you made a mistake Blush.

MangoFeverDream · 28/11/2019 08:28

Give her the name of a similar but different designer

Why on earth would you mislead someone like that? So petty!

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 09:52

wow TheCanterburyWhales
are you the colleague? You are the one who seem over-invested, trying to make it so personal. Touched a nerve, has it?

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 09:53

Ginfordinner
feeling better after making so rude personal attacks?

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 09:55

There are tens of thousands of earring designs available, why would anyone copy the exact same ones the person next to you has received for their birthday, it's just weird. I thought girls stopped doing that once they reach 14.

MangoFeverDream · 28/11/2019 10:17

I thought girls stopped doing that once they reach 14

Or ... they stop caring at 14 ✌️

midnightmisssuki · 28/11/2019 10:28

Were they expensive? As in thousands? Maybe she won’t be able to buy them. Tiffany’s? DeBeers? Cartier? Graff?

midnightmisssuki · 28/11/2019 10:29

Do you not like this colleague or something OP?

Jesuisclaude · 28/11/2019 10:29

I think it would be really annoying OP, I am laughing at all these sanctimonious posters, ‘I would LOVE everyone to have the same ring/wedding dress/decor/clothes as me, it shows what an amazing person I am you see’. Grin suuurrre it does.

theEnglishInpatient · 28/11/2019 10:58

Maybe they would love it actually, they are just a bit miffed no one is that interested in their taste Grin

HeyHeyWhatever · 28/11/2019 11:18

Two people are allowed to like the same thing. This is a really weird thread.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 28/11/2019 14:24

For those who wanted to see the earrings...

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2019 17:55

It's nothing else but rude, or a very low self esteem and the need to copy because she can't have any original thoughts in her own head

theEnglishInpatient and you don't think that this ^^ is rude? Hmm
